DEAR TRAVELER,

For decades, when I’m asked what I appreciate most about Galápagos, the answer is always the same: the total, utter lack of fear from any living creature.

Think about that for a moment; perhaps it’s the best possible definition of paradise.

There are no natural land predators here and, on top of that, 97% of the islands are National Park and fully protected.

But let me ask you—are you interested in seeing the most extraordinary array of animals and birds up close? Would you like to get into the sea with a face mask and snorkel to play with sea lions, turtles, and penguins? Would you like to take the most remarkable photos ever? Would you like to kayak along dramatic shorelines with frigatebirds soaring overhead?

If the answer is yes, you most definitely should visit Galápagos. And while you have plenty of choices for how to do that, I frankly believe joining us is the best choice you can make. Why? We’ve been at this for a very long time. In 2017 we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of my father’s pioneering expedition to Galápagos.

In Galápagos, who you go with matters. Our natural history staff and crew are very well chosen and trained. It’s not just their knowledge that enhances your experience, but their understanding of you as an individual as well, and their commitment to making your time remarkable.

For those of you who like to photograph, at whatever level, you’ll have the benefit of a LEX/NG photo instructor. They have been trained to teach by the best in the business at National Geographic headquarters in D.C.

And, finally, whether you’re 8 or 80, there is always something compelling to do, and we recognize that our guests come in all ages, and with myriad inclinations.

So, I hope we see you in paradise soon. If so, you will have stories to tell for a lifetime.

All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

OUR GALÁPAGOS RELATIONSHIPS RUN DEEPThey began when Lars-Eric Lindblad, considered by many to be the father of eco-tourism, led the first-ever citizen explorer expedition to Galápagos in 1967, and then stepped forward to pay the salaries of the islands’ first two conserva-tion officials in 1968.

While many travel companies have recently begun to offer Galapagos cruises, we’ve been committed to these islands for nearly 50 years, leading countless expeditions to reveal them, in a uniquely in-depth and immersive way, to generations of curious, intelligent travelers.

We were thrilled to learn that Travel + Leisure readers recently voted Galápagos the best islands in the world! We couldn’t agree more: they’re a must-see for all types of travelers.

And our authentic ship-based expedition is the ideal way to experience all the diversity and wonder. Our long experience is your assurance of an extraordinary adventure—and the wildlife that makes Galápagos unique in all the world is your guarantee.

THE QUALITY OF OUR STAFF

ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF YOUR EXPERIENCEOur Galápagos expedition team, hand-picked and Lindblad Expeditions-trained, is made up of engaging naturalists born and bred in the Galápagos Islands, and naturalists who moved to the islands from the mainland or other countries over 20 years ago. They live and breathe Galápagos, and are passionate about the nature and conservation of this remote archipelago. They each have a deep understanding of all aspects of Galápagos’ natural and human history, and are experts in relevant areas: ornithology, geology, zoology, and the undersea.

CARLOS ROMEROExpedition leader, naturalist & certified photo instructorRaised amid the biodiversity of Venezuela and Ecuador, Carlos was fascinated by tropical ecology at an early age. He holds a doctorate in biology and a master’s in ecotourism and natural protected areas management, and one of the scientific papers he’s authored led him to Galápagos. Entranced by the unique, fearless fauna of the archipelago, he chose to train as a naturalist. He has dedicated his life to the islands ever since, and generously shares his knowledge and insight with guests.

PAULA TAGLEExpedition leader & naturalistPaula grew up in the city of Guayaquil. After completing her degree in geology, she worked in different parts of Ecuador, including Galápagos. After completing her master’s in quaternary geology in Belgium, she discovered she was more interested in volcanoes than in raw materials. So, she eagerly returned to Galápagos, a mecca for geologists. Bewitched by the other wonders of the islands, Paula delights in interpreting and creating an in-depth experience for our guests.

JASON HEILMANNNaturalist, certified photo instructor & undersea specialistJason grew up in the lush Pacific Northwest. While attending university there, he met an Ecuadorian woman. Following her home, he found himself in the Galápagos Islands, one of the most revered natural environments on Earth, and his niche as a professional scuba diver and dive assistant on scientific projects. He entered the Galápagos National Park naturalist program in 1999, and now shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with our guests.

AURA BANDA CRUZNaturalist, certified photo instructor & undersea specialistAura’s grandparents were among the earliest settlers in the Galápagos in the 1930s—her mother was born on Floreana Island, one of twelve siblings intricately involved in

the conservation of the islands. Aura’s childhood was spent among the finches and swimming with sea lions. After completing studies in Quito, Aura returned and has spent the past ten years sharing Galápagos and photography with guests.

JUAN CARLOS AVILAExpedition leader, naturalist & certified photo instructorJuan Carlos spent his early years in the natural exuberance of the Cotopaxi region of Ecuador. At the age of twelve, his family moved to Santa Cruz, Galápagos. His knowledge of the natural history of the islands is bone deep. Currently completing his education degree, he is an advocate for the importance of the archipelago and its conservation. In his role as a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor, he helps guests “see” the islands in every sense.

JONATHAN AGUAS Naturalist & certified photo instructorJonathan’s family dates back five generations on San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos. He first left the islands on a scholarship to finish his bachelor’s degree in integrative biology in

the U.S., and returned to his beloved Galápagos to teach—choosing to work as a naturalist was a natural progression. His science background and keen eye for beauty led him to photography and to helping guests capture their Galápagos experience.

WHEN YOU TRAVEL WITH US,

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCETogether with our guests, we’ve contributed $6.8 million to important conservation, education, research, and community development projects in Galápagos, creating the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund to manage donations. Since the LEX-NG Fund carries the operating costs, 100% of guest donations stay in the region and are put toward the highest conservation priorities—determined by the Fund’s Board and advised by science and conservation leaders who know the region. Foundations including the Helmsley Charitable Trust have joined these efforts, providing significant grants to tackle the biggest challenges facing the archipelago. Here are some examples of the projects we support—and news on our Conservation In Action initiative.

NEW: CONSERVATION IN ACTION Last summer we inaugurated the first of an anticipated annual event: Conservation In Action. Sven Lindblad offered to donate $1,000 per person towards local conserva-tion for joining us on a Galápagos expedition from August 15 to September 26, 2015—to experience the islands, while participating in conservation firsthand. Guests who accepted the offer met and trained with our Paper To Pearls team aboard ship. Enthusiastic volunteers re-purposed clean waste paper (magazines, advertising, and more) to make beautiful, eco-smart “pearls.” Their efforts yielded a generous supply of brightly-hued paper pearls, which were then donated to Galápagos jewelry artisans, in conjunction with the LEX-NG Artisan Fund. (See story at right) More initiatives are being planned for next year; stay tuned for upcoming details.

ªAmong travel companies, only Lindblad Expeditions can trace their roots for contributing to vital conservation efforts back to the establishment of the Galápagos National Park, nearly 50 years ago.

A+ IN GALÁPAGOS STUDIESThe Tomás de Berlanga School, in the Santa Cruz highlands, is a private, open-air school that immerses its students in nature. Its curriculum seeks to cultivate the next generation of leaders for Galápagos through critical thinking, bilingualism, high academic standards, and experiential learning. Guests traveling with us aboard National Geographic Endeavour have the opportunity to visit the open-air classrooms, watch children learning in nature, and see the benefits of this program firsthand when classes are in session.

TRASH INTO TREASUREThe LEX-NG Artisan Fund is addressing two simultaneous problems: artisans’ need for materials, and Galápagos’ challenges in dealing with waste. The Glass Adaptive Reuse project trains artisans and students in the use of glass machinery and tools for carving, etching, and sanding, and provides them with inexpensive and readily available materials for their work. Three years after the program’s inception, 40% of the galleries and shops in Santa Cruz offer recycled glass objects. Restaurants and hotels are using recycled glass for tableware. Artisans trained in the program have won conservation in art awards regionally and nationally. And two of the artisans have been so successful, they’re building their own glass studios to employ others to expand their recycled offerings.

Above: LEX-NG Fund grants to this unique school have been transformative. For more info, visit expeditions.com/berlanga

Below: A great number of our guests purchase artisanal glass objects as worthy souvenirs of their experience. Five percent of all proceeds from our onboard Global Gallery and Global Market are earmarked for the Artisan Fund.

TOP 10 REASONS TO EXPERIE NCE GALÁPAGOS WITH LINDBLAD- NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

Experience matters. We have been leading expeditions to Galápagos for nearly 50 years. No other company has the depth of connection to the place, its wildlife, its human population and its conservation that we do. This is not a boast on our part, but rather a reason: our tenure here is your assurance that traveling with us will make the most of your time, intelligence, and curiosity.

Conservation matters. Since 1967, we have played an active role in Galápagos conservation initiatives, working in conjunction with the Galápagos National Park, the Charles Darwin Research Station, local NGOs, and committed community groups. Since 1997 together with our guests, we have raised $6.8 million to support conservation, education, research, and community development priorities. We established the LEX-NG Fund to manage grants made in the region.

1

The undersea matters. Our ships are equipped with complete snorkel gear, including wetsuits; yours for the duration of the voyage. And to ensure that the undersea is a huge part of your experience, our undersea specialist dives, records, and reveals it in onboard video presentations. Plus, National Geographic Endeavour is equipped with a glass-bottom boat for dry undersea exploring.

Ownership matters. Lars-Eric Lindblad, our founder who pioneered Galápagos expedition travel in 1967, believed owning and operating his own ship was vital to the guest experience. We are the only U.S. company who owns and operates two ships in Galápagos, the 96-guest National Geographic Endeavour, and the intimate, yacht-like 48-guest National Geographic Islander.

2

Knowledge matters. A core group of naturalists work exclusively for Lindblad-National Geographic, providing a continuity of in-depth knowledge and our guest-centric tradition. Our generous naturalist-to-guest ratio of 12:1 means more diversity of personalities and insights for you.

GALÁPAGOS + THE UPPER AMAZON

EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

We have conducted numer-ous Amazon expeditions in our history, and launched our first voyage aboard the beautiful, 28-guest Delfin II in

August 2010. In order to provide expedi-tion leadership in this pristine region, we tapped our tenured expedition leaders to lead our Amazon voyages, providing our guests with the same in-depth interpreta-tion they find on our other expeditions. Our veteran team is highly knowledgeable about this locale, and trained to illuminate all the discoveries you’ll make.

slip through the forest in a skiff as night falls, using a spotlight to find caimans, frogs, fishing bats and other creatures of the night.

Pay a visit to one of the communities on the reserve’s edge and get to know the ribereños, those who live on the riverbanks, and their age-old traditions. Meet local women and children, and watch them make jewelry and other handicrafts. Learn how local subsistence farmers cultivate wild plants and trees to earn income. Hear about how local residents find edible fruits and indigenous plants with medicinal properties hidden in the jungle. (B,L,D Daily)

DAYS 11-18: PACAYA-SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVESpend this week exploring the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a pristine swath of jungle—one of the largest in South America—stretching more than five million acres, and harboring some of the Amazon’s most fascinating flora and fauna. Bordered by the Marañón and the Ucayali, two powerful rivers that converge to create the famed Amazon, the reserve floods annually with nutrient-rich waters and is known locally as the Mirrored Forest for the reflections created by the glassy water.

Set out into this remarkable wilderness on daily excursions by skiff, kayak, and, when

the water level permits, hikes on terra firma. Skim past giant lily pads afloat on black-water lakes, and venture deep into the rain forest on narrow tributaries. Spot sloths and monkeys, including variably colored saddleback tamarins, noisy and shaggy-tailed monk saki monkeys. Watch for an astounding variety of birds, from tanagers and hummingbirds to parrots and endangered scarlet macaws. In the river, look for massive paiche fish, the Amazon’s largest; rare pink dolphins; and the infamous piranhas.

Enjoy an opportunity to swim in a lake in the reserve’s interior. Seek out Victoria ama-zonica, a giant water lily that grows in small lagoons. Go on a bird-watching hike, listening for the vocal oropendola and then looking for its telltale yellow tail. Watch the sun set and listen to a cacophonous symphony of nocturnal animals calling out across the treetops. Then
