Mid-American ConferenceMid-American ConferenceOver the span of 57 years, the Mid-American Con-

ference has progressively grown and developed intoone of the most aggressive Division I conferences in thecountry.

Under the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has moved its men’s and women’s basketballchampionship into a first-class NBA facility at Gund

Arena in Cleveland. In the coming years, the

MAC will co-host the 2006NCAA Women’s BasketballMideast Regional and the2007 Women’s Final Four atGund Arena, after success-fully hosting the 2000 NCAA

Men’s Basketball Regional at The Palace in Auburn Hills,Mich. The MAC also continues to be one of three confer-ences (along with the SEC and Big 12) to sponsor a foot-ball championship game.

Continuing to lead by example, the MAC providesits student-athletes and member institutions with the bestpossible opportunities. Since 1946, the MAC has not onlystood the test of time, but has evolved into a league thatits founders could not have imagined or dreamed.

Based in Cleveland since July of 1999 following a15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has establishedhistoric measurements in both football and men’s andwomen’s basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio.

The 2002-03 athletic season marked the secondstraight season that the MAC had two teams involved inbowl games with league champion Marshall (GMAC)winning post-season competition for the fifth consecu-tive season, while West Division champion Toledo par-ticipated in the Motor City Bowl for the second time inas many years.

In June of 2003 the MAC reached a five-year agree-

ment with ESPN, Inc. that guarantees the league expo-sure for the term of the agreement on ESPN and ESPN2.ABC/ESPN owns exclusive rights to the MAC FootballChampionship game and ESPN/ESPN2 owns those samerights to the MAC Men’s Basketball Championship.

The MAC’s relationship with ESPN, Inc., helped theleague receive additional national exposure in February2003 as part of the ESPN Bracket Buster Saturday. MACschools Bowling Green and Kent State were on nation-ally televised games while Ball State and Marshall re-ceived ESPN Regional exposure. The MAC will continue

as a participant in the 2004 ESPN Bracket Busterevent. The Mid-American Conference was foundedas a five-school league on February 24, 1946 inColumbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati,Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted ascharter members. The 14 current football-member institutionshave a total enrollment of better than 310,000,with individual enrollments ranging from 16,000-38,000. The MAC’s overall enrollment makes itthe fourth-largest conference in the United States.MAC alumni number over 1.7 million.
