• Cincinnati is shooting 47.3 percent from the field, 37.6 percent from the arc and 68.9 per-cent from the foul line.

• The Bearcats are dominating their opponents on the glass, out-rebounding them by an av-erage margin of +9.4 boards per game (40.6-31.2).

• Mick Cronin is in his 12th season as the Cincin-nati head coach. He has 248-137 record at the school. He has an overall collegiate coaching record of 317-161.

A DIFFERENT LOOK ... • When Memphis plays Cincinnati Sunday, the

game will have an odd feeling. • The playing floor will look familiar, but the are-

na will definitely be different. • With their on-campus arena undergoing reno-

vations, the Bearcats are playing all of their 2017-18 home games at Northern Kentucky’s BB&T Arena in Highland Heights, Ky.

• Cincinnati has a 7-0 record in its new “home” this season.

... BUT SOMETHING’S FAMILIAR • While Sunday’s game is the Tigers’ first at BB&T

Arena, they’ll see a familiar color scheme, logo and signage.

• BB&T Arena is the homecourt for the Northern Kentucky Norse, an opponent on the Memphis schedule earlier this season.

• Memphis hosted Northern Kentucky Nov. 25 at FedExForum and pulled out a 76-74 come-from-behind victory.

• Northern Kentucky is sharing its homecourt with Cincinnati this season.

WELCOME BACK, COACH SMITH! • Memphis head coach Tubby Smith will enjoy a

second homecoming this season when his Ti-gers play Cincinnati on the Northern Kentucky campus in Highland Heights, Ky.

• The game is the first for Smith back in the state of Kentucky, a place where he coached in for 10 seasons from 1997-2007.

• The last time Smith coached a game in the Bluegrass State was Feb. 28, 2007, when Ken-tucky defeated Georgia 82-70 at Rupp Arena.

• Smith led the Wildcats to 10-straight, 20-win seasons and 10-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

• Smith guided Kentucky to six NCAA Tourna-ment Sweet Sixteens, four Elite Eights, one Final Four and one national championship (1998).

• Earlier this season, Smith had his first home-coming when he took Memphis to his home state of Maryland for the Tigers’ 2017-18 sea-son opener versus Alabama in Annapolis, Md.

• Smith was born in Scotland, Md., which is a two-hour drive from Annapolis.

ANOTHER TIGER HOMECOMING • Although he won’t actually play in his home-

town of Cincinnati Sunday, junior Malik Rhodes is playing his hometown Bearcats.

• Rhodes grew up in Cincinnati and played his prep career at Clark Montessori.

• The 6-foot-2 guard was an all-state honorable mention pick and an all-league performer.

TIGERS’ NEW YEAR’S EVE SUCCESS • Memphis is opening American Athletic Confer-

ence play against Cincinnati New Year’s Eve af-ternoon.

Conference road openers. • Memphis won its league road opener in 2016-

ONE OF ONLY TWO • Maybe the Tigers need to send some gifts to

the American Athletic Conference scheduling computer for future seasons.

• Memphis opens the 2017-18 conference sea-son with two-straight road games at Cincinnati Sunday and at UCF Jan. 3.

• The Tigers are one of two teams in the Ameri-can Athletic Conference that is opening league play with its first two games on the road.

• UCF is the other team that begins conference action with two-straight road games (at SMU, at ECU).

YOUTH VS. VETS • There is a huge disparity in the youth versus

veterans match-up when Memphis faces Cin-cinnati Sunday.

• The Tigers return only two letterwinners and three players that saw game action in 2016-17.

• On the other hand, the Bearcats return three starters and nine letterwinners.

junior Jeremiah Martin Sunday. • In the Feb. 23, 2017, encounter at Fifth Third

CLOSING OUT THE OLD YEAR IN STYLE • The Tigers are closing out 2017 with a Dec. 31

game at Cincinnati, and they have done well in their final game of the calendar year since 1997-98.

• The Tigers have a 17-3 record (.850 winning percentage) in their final game of the calendar year the past 20 campaigns.

• Memphis has won its last seven “final-game-of-the-calendar-year” games (since 2010-11).

• Memphis won its final game of 2016 with a Dec. 30, 2016, victory over No. 20 South Caro-lina at FedExForum (70-54).

• The Gamecocks went on to advance to the 2017 NCAA Final Four.

openers is 35-19 (.648 winning percentage). • Memphis is 19-8 (.704 winning percentage)

when its conference opener is at home and 16-11 (.593 winning percentage) when its league opener is on the road.

• The Tigers have won 12 of their last 13 league openers. Memphis’ 12-game win streak in league openers was snapped last season with a loss to SMU 58-54 Dec. 27, 2016.

JUCOS JIVIN’ • As with all newcomers to NCAA Division I bas-

ketball, it takes time to finding their footing. • It’s true for freshmen as well as junior college

transfers. • Now, with 13 games under their belts, the Ti-

gers’ junior college transfers are learning their roles, and in turn, getting comfortable playing at this level.

• Their comfort level has been seen in recent per-formances, and the following shows that:

NICKEL & DIMIN’ • Freshman David Nickelberry had a “break-

out” week in performances against Siena and Loyola Md., and for his efforts, he was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

• Nickelberry is a versatile player and he showed off those skills in the Dec. 23 victory over Loyola Md.

• The 6-foot-6 forward/guard posted season-bests for points (14) and assists (5) versus the Greyhounds. He also had six rebounds and two steals in a season-high 30 minutes of game ac-tion.

• Nickelberry netted his 14 points of 6-of-8 field goals and 2-of-3 free throws.

• For the season, the Orlando, Fla., native is aver-aging 3.6 points and has 15 assists (fourth-most on the team).

• Nickelberry sat out the Dec. 28 LSU game due to an illness.

• Memphis men’s basketball held its grand opening of the program’s new practice facility, the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center, Nov. 17. It is a comprehensive, 62,000-square-foot training facility on the University’s Park Avenue Campus.

• This stand-alone facility en-compasses offices, locker rooms, 3,250-square-foot weight room, training fa-cilities, two NCAA regulation courts, as well as spaces for student-athletes to study, train, eat and develop.

• In addition, the history of Memphis basketball will be showcased via a large atrium in the grand lobby known as Traditions Hall, a 7,300-square-foot area that will double as a museum designed to be an interactive celebration of Tigers basket-ball for the general public.

• The new practice facilities, part of the University’s “Time to Shine” capital cam-

paign, represent a major commitment from the University and Memphis community to compete at the highest level.

SOMETHING’S BREWING OFF THE BENCH • Heading into the Dec. 9 game versus Bryant,

head coach Tubby Smith decided on a starting lineup change.

• After going with the same lineup for the first seven games, Smith inserted freshman Jamal Johnson in place of junior Kareem Brewton Jr.

• In doing so, the Tigers may have found them-selves a spark off the bench and a sixth man for the rest of the season.

• The following compares Brewton Jr. as a start-er and off the bench:

Starter Stat 6th Man 7.3 PPG 9.7 2.4 RPG 3.0 2.4 APG 1.3 33.3 FG Pct. 51.2 12.5 3-pt. FG Pct. 36.4

DOWN, BUT NOT OUT • Although they don’t want to make a habit of

it all season long, Tigers fans will take the wins no matter how they come.

• In six of its 10 home games, Memphis has had to do so the hard way — coming back from double-digit deficits.

• However, the comeback magic ran out in the Dec. 28 LSU game. It was the first time this season Memphis trailed by double digits and failed to win.

• The following shows how the Tigers are be-coming the “Comeback Kids”:

Opponent Deficit/Half Final LSU 11 (59-48)/2nd 71-61, L Loyola Md. 12 (25-13)/1st 83-71, W Siena 10 (36-26)/2nd 70-66, W Samford 11 (41-30)/1st 65-64, W Mercer* 11 (26-15)/1st 83-81, W Northern Ky. 16 (29-13)/1st 76-74, W Little Rock 14 (21-7)/1st 70-62, W *doubleovertime

GETTING COMFY: OFFENSE • With all the new faces on the squad in 2017-18,

it was going to take time for all to learn their roles.

• And while that process is still on-going, the new Tigers are growing comfortable.

• Glimpses of that comfort level was seen on of-fense in the Dec. 9 victory over Bryant.

• The following are some of the offensive num-bers the Tigers put up in the Dec. 9 win:

• 90 points — the most in a game this season • 13 three-pointers — the most in a game this season • 26 assists — the most in a game this season • 57.6 FG pct. — highest in a game this season • 56.5 three-point FG pct. — highest in a game this season • 6 three-pointers (x2) — Jeremiah Martin, Jamal Johnson hit career-high six treys

GETTING COMFY: DEFENSE • Many coaches will say that it’s harder for new-

comers to learn the defensive side of the game when they first arrive.

ABOUT THOSE FREE THROWS/PART I • Memphis’ free throw shooting has been a topic

of conversation almost as long as the program’s been around.

• But, critics have to give the Tigers their due for their free throw performance Dec. 2 in the double-overtime win over Mercer.

• Memphis shot 88.2 percent from the charity stripe (30-of-34).

• In the final 3:36 of regulation and overtime (13:36), Memphis was 21-of-24 (87.5) from the free throw line.

• Since 2000, the Dec. 2 game was only the 14th time Memphis shot 80 percent or better from the foul line with 30 or more attempts in the game.

• Memphis following the Mercer free throw per-formance with a 76.2 percentage in the Dec. 5 win over Samford. The Tigers were 5-of-5 from the charity stripe in the game’s final 6:32, including Jamal Johnson’s game-winner with :02.5 on the clock.

• To take it further, the 88.2 free throw shooting performance versus Mercer was the sixth-best when shooting 30 or more free throws in a game since 1979, and the following shows that:

ABOUT THOSE FREE THROWS/PART II • Since the Dec. 2 Mercer game, Memphis has

been on target from free throw line. • In the last seven games, the Tigers are shooting

73.1 percent from the charity stripe (144-of-197).

• Memphis shot over 70 percent in six of the last eight games, including a season-high 88.2 per-cent (30-of-34) in the Dec. 2 victory over Mer-cer.

MARTIN’S MAJOR MO-JO/PART I • In the home opener versus Little Rock Nov. 14,

junior Jeremiah Martin had a career game. • Martin scored a career-high 26 points on 7-of-

12 field goals, 4-of-5 treys and 8-of-11 free throws.

• Martin’s previous career-high scoring perfor-mance was 25 points in the Tigers’ win at Okla-homa last season.

MARTIN’S MAJOR MO-JO/PART II • Well, Jeremiah Martin did it again. • Martin tied his career scoring high with 26

points against Louisville at Madison Square Garden Dec. 16.

• He netted his career-high tying 26 points on 8-of-15 field goals, 1-of-3 treys and 9-of-9 free throws.

• The Memphis, Tenn., native also pulled down nine boards and almost recorded the second double-double performance of his career.

• Martin had three assists, two blocked shots and two steals versus the Cardinals.

MARTIN’S MAJOR MO-JO/PART III • Well, Jeremiah Martin did it a third time in

2017-18. • Martin tied his career scoring high with 26

points against Loyola Md. Dec. 23. • He netted his career-high tying 26 points on

7-of-15 field goals, 3-of-6 treys and 9-of-12 free throws.

• He also had four rebounds, four steals, three assists and one blocked shot.

• For the season, the Memphis, Tenn., native has 32 steals and nine blocked shots.

• So, in doing the math, Martin has 68.8 percent of his steals and 77.8 percent of his blocked shots in the last five games.

• In that stretch, Martin had a season-high five steals twice in wins over Albany Dec. 12 and Siena Dec. 20.

nior Kyvon Davenport has been the Tigers’ rim protector in recent games.

• In the last six contests, Davenport has posted 17 of his season’s 24 blocked shots (70.8 per-cent).

• The 6-foot-8 forward has recorded multi-block performances in five of the last six games, in-cluding a season-best four swats against Bryant Dec. 9, Albany Dec. 12 and Siena Dec. 20.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY/PART I • The 2017-18 season is the 45th anniversary of

the Tigers 1972-73 squad that advanced to the NCAA title game.

• Memphis lost to John Wooden’s UCLA team led by Bill Walton 87-66.

• The Tigers, under the guidance of 2010 College Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Gene Bartow, were led by Memphis natives Larry Finch and Ronnie Robinson and junior college transfer Larry Kenon.

• All four have banners hanging in FedExForum rafters. Bartow’s banner is for his hall of fame induction, while the three players had their numbers retired.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY/PART II • The 2017-18 season also is the 10th anniver-

sary of the Tigers 2007-08 team that advanced to the NCAA title game.

• Memphis dropped a heart-breaking 75-68 overtime decision to Kansas in the champion-ship game.

• The 2007-08 Tigers finished the season with a 38-2 record, tying the NCAA season mark for most wins.

JOHNSON IN THE CLUTCH • He’s just 13 games into his career, but freshman

Jamal Johnson is proving to be a clutch per-former, and the following details that:

Game What Happened Samford ...................................Grabs a rebound and puts it back in and get fouled with :02.5 left; hits FT for the 65-64 win

Mercer ...................................... Hits a trey with :27 left to tie the game at 63-all; the game goes to OT Northern Kentucky ................. Hits back-to-back treys late in 2nd half to keep Tigers in the lead; comes up with rebound off a block with :06 left to preserve the win

THE “NEW” BREAKDOWN • There’s been a lot of preseason talk about how

“new” the 2017-18 Tigers are. • So, how “new” are they? • Here’s the breakdown (includes walk-ons):

HOW YOUNG ARE THEY/PART I • When one looks at the previous note, it’s pretty

obvious. • But, to take it further, Memphis is among the

top-10 programs in NCAA Division I basketball with the most scholarship newcomers in 2017-18.

• The following is that list (credit toChattanoo-ga’sJimHortenandPitt’sMattPlizga):

HOW YOUNG ARE THEY/PART II • Since there are eight newcomers to this year’s

squad, Memphis is going to appear on several “youngest team” related charts.

• Below is a list of the NCAA Division I teams with the fewest number of returning letterwinners in 2017-18 (credittoChattanooga’sJimHortenandPitt’sMattPlizga):

HOW YOUNG ARE THEY/PART III • Memphis returns only 1,825 minutes from last

season. • On the other side, Cincinnati returns 4,825 min-

utes from last season’s squad. • And, the Tigers are going to face that lack of ex-

perience all season as one of the NCAA Division I teams with under 2,000 minutes returning from 2016-17.

IMPACT JUCOS • According to CBSSports.com reporter Jon Roth-

stein, Memphis has two of the top-impact ju-nior college transfers on its roster in 2017-18.

• In his article published Oct. 19, Rothstein lists Kareem Brewton Jr. and Kyvon Davenport as two of his top-10 impact juco transfers.

• Brewton Jr. and Davenport both were named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-America first team selections in 2016-17.

• Brewton Jr. was named the Southern Confer-ence Player of the Year and helped lead Eastern Florida State College to the NJCAA title game.

• Davenport earned the Georgia Collegiate Ath-letic Assocation (GCAA) Player of the Year and helped lead Georgia Highlands College to a 32-2 overall record.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DAVENPORT • Junior college transfer Kyvon Davenport made

an impression in his NCAA Division I debut ver-sus Alabama Nov. 10.

• The 6-foot-8 forward scored 15 points and pulled down 11 boards against Alabama.

• Davenport is the first Tiger to record a double-double performance in his Memphis debut since Will Coleman in the 2009-10 season opener.

• Davenport added his second double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the double-overtime win over Mercer Dec. 2.

• He recorded his third double-double of the season versus LSU Dec. 28 (17 points-11 re-bounds).

• Coleman had 16 points and 10 boards in the 2009-10 season-opening victory over Jackson State.

• There have only been five players that record-ed a double-double in their Tigers debut since 2000, and they are as follows:

Season Player/Opponent Dbl-Dbl 2017-18 Kyvon Davenport/Alabama 15-11 2009-10 Will Coleman/Jackson State 16-10 2004-05 Joey Dorsey/Savannah State 10-16 2003-04 Sean Banks/Wake Forest 10-14 2001-02 Chris Massie/Wofford 11-10

ROLLING ON THE RIVER(S) • A week after fellow returnee Jeremiah Martin

hit his career scoring high, senior Jimario Rivers did the same against New Orleans Nov. 21.

• Rivers netted a career-best 18 points on 8-of-11 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws.

• The eight field goals made also were a career-high.

• His previous-highs were 16 points and seven field goals in the Tigers’ home win over Con-necticut last January.

• Rivers tied his career-high with 18 points in the Dec. 2 win over Mercer. He hit a career-best eight free throws (nine attempts) in the victory.

• Rivers also played a career-high 42 minutes versus the Mercer Bears. His previous-high for minutes played was 38 earlier this season against New Orleans.

• Rivers missed the Dec. 20 and 23 games versus Siena and Loyola Md., respectively, as he went through concussion protocol following an injury in the Dec. 16 Louisville contest.

• He returned to action in the Dec. 28 game ver-sus LSU and had 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots (tied career-high).

TIGERS FOR THREEEEEEE! • With its four three-pointers versus LSU Dec. 28,

Memphis continued its streak of hitting at least one trey in a game.

• The Tigers now have connected on at least one three-pointer in 565-straight games.

• The last time Memphis failed to hit a three-pointer was near the start of the 2001-02 cam-paign.

• Memphis went 0-of-13 from arc in an 81-70 loss to Alabama in the consolation game of the Guardians Classic at Kemper Arena (Nov. 21, 2001).

• The Tigers’ last game with only one trey made was just last season.

• Memphis was 1-of-7 from the arc in a 70-54 upset win over No. 25 South Carolina at FedEx-Forum. The Gamecocks advanced to the 2017 NCAA Final Four.
