After losing their season opener to DePaul in Week 00, the Pope John Lions will look to bounce back by notching a victory over Paramus Catholic when the two squads face off Saturday afternoon at Pope John XXIII Regional High School.

The Lions will try to pick up their second win against the Paladins since the two programs began playing each other in 2014. The Lions’ lone win against the Paladins was in 2017, when they posted a 43-7 victory.

Last year, the Lions lost to Paramus Catholic, 22-14, at Paramus Catholic. In that game the Lions scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but their late rally fell short.

To add another victory against PC, the Lions know they have to play better than they did in their 52-28 loss to DePaul at DePaul.

In that game, they only trailed by seven points at halftime before the Spartans outscored them, 31-14, in the second half.

The Lions’ offense scored touchdowns on only two of their 12 drives, both coming on big plays by senior wide receiver Connor Milks (60-yard TD catch) and junior wideout Jarelle Robinson (58-yard TD catch). The Lions received their other two TDs on special teams, as Milks blocked a punt and returned it for a 10-yard score and Robinson returned a kickoff 95 yards to the house.

The Lions’ defense will try to cut down on the amount of points and yards (544 total yards) allowed as well. The only bright spots on defense were the play of junior safety Sean Brennan (12 tackles), senior linebacker Mike DeNucci (nine tackles, one sack), and sophomore linebacker Jack Stoll (10 tackles).

Since 2012, the Lions have had 65 players go on to play college football. Among this 65-man group, 2014 graduates Noah Brown and Ryan Izzo have gone on to be drafted to play in the National Football League after enjoying standout careers at Pope John and at their respective NCAA Division I universities. Brown is in his third year with the Dallas Cowboys after being picked in the seventh round by them in the 2017 NFL Draft. Following a three-year ca-reer at Ohio State University, Brown became Pope John’s first graduate to play in the NFL, seeing time in 13 games with the five-time Super Bowl champion Cowboys and making four receptions for 33 yards while playing 279 total snaps in 2017. Last year, Brown improved by making seven receptions for 73 yards in 10 games, with two of those catches coming in the Cowboys’ two playoff games against the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. Izzo is the second Pope John graduate to be on an NFL roster after being drafted in the seventh round by the New England Patriots in April 2018. After a three-year career at Florida State University, Izzo earned a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots despite being on the injured reserve list for the entire 2018 season. This year, Izzo is projected to be one of the top two tight ends for the Patriots to open the season after playing the most snaps of any Patriot tight end in the preseason. While Brown and Izzo are competing at the highest level of football, the Lions currently have 36 alums playing in college. They are: Stephen Adams (Johns Hopkins University), Nick Bello (Assumption College), Jake Brown (Harvard University), Ireland Burke (Boston College), Jhadir Charles (Mon-mouth University), John Cotis (Ithaca College), Zachary Cluett (Castleton University), Samuel Darrell (Susquehanna University), Matt Dengler (Ford-ham University), Ryan Dengler (Lafayette College), Nick DeNucci (Boston College), Nick DeSenzo (Muhlenberg College), Nick Esposito (Catholic University), Tim Fitzpatrick (Muhlenberg College), Ryan Greenhagen (Ford-ham University), Artis Hemmingway (University of Delaware), Sam Howson (Rutgers University), Ty Hranicka (Lafayette College), Niko Hroncich (Mont-clair State University), Jacob Huhn (University of Richmond), Tajimier Jones (University of Massachusetts Amherst), Terrance Jones (Idaho State Univer-sity), Jason Miller (Towson University), Trevor Moore (Catholic University), Louis Montana (University of Richmond), Jack Morelli (Catholic University), Aidan Murray (University of Richmond), Andrew Nieves (Susquehanna Uni-versity), Austin Pedersen (Kutztown University), Gio Potente (Fordham Uni-versity), Joe Quitadamo (Stonehill College), Sekayi Rudolph (Marist College), Jack Ryan (Wesleyan University), Chris Sabo (Merrimack College), Dalyn Wade-Perry (Stanford University), and Mateo Zappata (Marist College).

CARLSON/POPE JOHN STATE RESULTS

Brian Carlson was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Pope John XXIII Regional High School/Our Lady of the Lake football program on April 1, 2011. Since superseding the legendary Vic Paternostro, who led the Lions to 20 state championships in 43 seasons, Carlson has been putting his stamp on the program. Entering his ninth season this year, Carlson has guided the Lions to a 48-34 record, three NJAC American Division titles and a Non-Public, Group 3 championship game appearance in 2013. In 2014, Carlson helped the Lions elevate the program by having them face some of the best teams in the state in Paramus Catholic and DePaul. After two years of only having these two powerhouses on a schedule primarily filled with public schools from Sussex and Morris counties, the Lions started playing an exclusive non-public school schedule that featured some of the top private schools in the Northeast. Now, the Lions play and scrimmage natonally-known teams such as Bergen Catholic, Paramus Catholic, St. Joseph-Montvale, Don Bosco Prep, DePaul, St. Peter’s Prep, St. John’s College High School (Washington, D.C.), Archbishop Wood (Pa.), and Malvern Prep (Pa.) on an annual basis. Off the field, Carlson helped the Lions excel in the classroom and in the community. Academically, 65 Lions have gone on to continue their academic and athletic careers at the NCAA level. This fall, 36 alumni will be playing on the college gridiron, with 24 of them competing at the NCAA D-I or Division II level. In the community, the Lions have volunteered their time to local charities and organizations, such as SCARC and senior citizen homes. Another big achievement of Carlson’s at Pope John was forming the Jr Lions Athletics Program — a program that offers six sports to boys and girls in grades K-8 who attend Pope John High School, Pope John Middle School and Reverend George A. Brown Memorial School while modeling them after the way Pope John runs its varsity squads. Carlson laid the groundwork for the program by using the vision he has for the football team as the “template.” The football team is run by faith-based principles, is committed to the highest academic standards, and thrives on competition, otherwise known as “Faith, Family, Football.” The program has taken off since its inception in 2017, as it has over 400 students competing, including over 200 for football. Before coming to Pope John, Carlson spent the 2010 season as the linebackers coach at Don Bosco Prep and was previously the head coach of Kean Univer-sity’s football program for eight seasons from 1992-99. During his tenure, he helped the school win a NJAC co-championship and the ECAC South Bowl championship. A native of Saddle Brook, Carlson is a 1979 graduate of Paramus Catholic and a 1983 graduate of Montclair State University, where he played as a line-backer/defensive end for four years and was captain of the team as a senior. He earned his BS degree in Economics. He was also the CEO of Parisi Sports Inc., a posiion he held for over 10 years. In addition to coaching, Carlson is a business teacher at Pope John and has served as the department’s chair for the last four years. He lives in Sparta with his wife, Donna and their two children Brendan and Kate.

THE SERIES VS. PARAMUS CATHOLIC

LAST MEETING After playing close to 44 minutes of inconsistent football, the Lions scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter, but their late rally fell short as they lost to Paramus Catholic, 22-14, at Paramus Catholic. The Lions trailed, 15-0, midway through the fourth quarter, but the Lions managed to make it interesting in the final four minutes by receiving a pair of rushing TDs from junior running back Nafis Matthews that were set up by two big pass plays caught by senior wide receiver Ryan Dengler for 33 and 67 yards, respectively. Matthews’ scores were from 1 and 3 yards out, respectively. However, a 53-yard touchdown run by the Paladins that occurred in between the two Pope John scores and a 10-yard run on second down on the Paladins’ drive following the Lions’ second TD sealed the win for PC. Matthews and Dengler led the offense in the loss. Matthews finished with 18 carries for 56 yards, while Dengler hauled in four receptions for 143 yards. Senior defensive lineman Ireland Burke paced the Lions’ defense, as he racked up 10 tackles. Fellow senior defensive lineman Louis Montana registered five tackles and two sacks, while senior linebacker Chris Sabo added nine tackles in the defeat.

TEAM STATISTICS GAME LEADERS

In an effort to elevate the program to what it is today, the Lions started an annual series with Paramus Catho-lic — one of the top non-public programs in the state — back in 2014. So far, Paramus Catholic leads it at 4-1. The Paladins powered past the Lions in the first two meetings, posting victories of 63-10 and 28-0, respective- ly. In the third meeting in 2016 at Paramus Catholic, the Lions gave the Paladins a run for their money, as they had a chance to score a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but they ultimately fell by a 33-28 count. In the fourth meeting in 2017, the Lions finally posted their first victory over the Paladins by rout- ing them, 43-7, at Pope John. At the time, both teams were ranked in the top 10 in NJ.com’s Top 20 poll, as the Lions were ranked sixth and Paramus Catholic was ranked eighth. The Lions’ win over the Paladins put them at 5-0 on the season. It also marked their first victory over one of the “Big 6” schools (Paramus Catholic, Bergen Catholic, Don Bosco Prep, St. Joseph-Montvale, St. Peter’s Prep and De-Paul) from the former Big North Conference since these schools started becoming powerhouse programs, which has happened within the last five years. Moreover, the win put Pope John at No. 4 in the News12 Varsity Tri-State Top 20 poll — the highest ranking the team had ever had in the poll. In the fifth and most recent meeting, the Lions dropped a tough 22-14 loss to the Paladins at Paramus Catholic. After playing close to 44 minutes of inconsistent football, the Lions scored two touchdowns in the final four min-utes of the fourth quarter, but their late rally fell short.

20GAME 1 RECAP: LIONS STRUGGLE TO STOP DePAUL, LOSE SEASON OPENER

21 2019 Pope John Football

TEAM STATISTICS GAME LEADERS

WAYNE — The Pope John Lions played DePaul tough in the first half, but the Spartans pulled away in the second half en route to a 52-28 victory on Friday at DePaul Catholic High School. With the defeat, the Lions have now lost the last seven meetings against DePaul and have dropped to 5-8 in the all-time series. The Lions’ last win against the Spartans was in 1997, when they rolled to a 44-13 victory in the Parochial, Group 2 championship game to capture their third state title in a row and 17th overall in school history. The loss also put the Lions at 0-1 in the North Jersey Super Football Conference United White Division, while DePaul improved to 1-0 in the four-team division that also includes Delbarton and Seton Hall Prep. The Lions got off to a nice start against the Spartans, as they forced two turnovers and took a 7-0 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter after senior wide receiver Connor Milks scored on a 60-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Peter Delaportas. Unfortunately, the Lions allowed the Spartans to score three consecutive touchdowns — all coming on passing scores — to fall into a 21-7 hole. But, the Lions kept the game close after Milks blocked a punt and returned it for a 10-yard TD to trim DePaul’s lead to 21-14, which the Spartans took into halftime. However, the Spartans put up 31 points in the second half, with 17 of them coming in the third quarter, to put the game out of reach for the Lions. The Lions also gave up 544 total yards to DePaul in the game. Pope John only scored twice in the second half, with junior Jarelle Robinson playing a role in both scores after returning the first one 95 yards for a TD on a kickoff in the third quarter and scoring on a 58-yard pass from Delaportas in the fourth. Robinson finished the game with 90 receiving yards on two catches, while Milks had 87 yards on three receptions. Delaports completed 11-of-27 passes for 210 yards. Despite the amount of points and yardage allowed, theLions had some solid performances from junior safetySean Brennan (team-high 12 tackles), senior linebackerMike DeNucci (nine tackles, one sack) and sophomore linebacker Jack Stoll (10 tackles).

2018 POPE JOHN XXIII HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON HIGHLIGHTS The Lions suffered their first losing season since 1994-95 and their first season with two wins or less since 1966-67 by going 2-9 on the gridiron. However, one of those wins was a 33-12 victory over St. John Vianney in the Non-Public, Group 3 first round. The playoff victory put the Lions in the Non-Public, Group 3 semifinals for the third straight year, but they lost in that round to eventual state champion Red Bank Catholic, 27-0. Along with the win over St. John Vianney, the Lions also beat Seton Hall Prep, 30-20, at Seton Hall Prep in their final regular season game and division game of the season. The win over the Pirates allowed them to finish third in the North Jersey Super Football Conference United White Division with a 1-2 record. Before these two wins, the Lions lost eight straight games to begin the season — a losing streak that had never been seen before in the 57-year history of Pope John football. The Lions lost their season opener to DePaul, then dropped two close games to Paramus Catholic and Archbishop Wood, of Warminster, Pa., respectively. Unfortnately, the losses kept piling up, as they fell to St. Joseph of Montvale, Don Bosco Prep, Delbarton, Bergen Catholic, and St. Peter’s Prep, respectively. The closest they came to breaking the losing streak was against Bergen Catholic, which they lost, 14-6, despite trailing by only

one point through almost three quarters. Despite the lack of wins, the Lions saw 15 players earn All-NJSFC United White Division First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention honors and 13 players continue to their academic and athletic careers at the NCAA level.
