GAME PREVIEWThe first road trip of the 2018-19 season takes the College of Charleston men’s basketball team (1-0) to the home of its former Southern Conference rival Western Carolina (0-1) for a Saturday, Nov. 10 matinee tilt at noon (ET) at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C. The Cougars have won the last six-straight meetings between both schools including an 18-point road win in December of 2016 – the only contest to be decided in double digits over the last seven games in the series. When both of these two teams meet, it’s always a battle. CofC is coming off a season-opening 85-73 victory over Presbyterian College on Nov. 6 at TD Arena. Junior guard Grant Riller, the team’s top returning scorer, put up a game-high 27 points versus the Blue Hose, while senior forward Jarrell Brantley had a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Cougars also got 17 points from their bench and held PC to 25.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc (7-of-27).

SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINAWestern Carolina was picked to finish ninth in both the preseason Southern Conference Coaches and Media Polls. The Catamounts opened the season on the road with a 96-73 loss at Wright State on Nov. 7. Junior newcomer Carlos Dotson, a transfer from Central Florida Community College, scored a team-high 17 points in his WCU debut. First-year head coach Mark Prosser, who previously served six years on the coaching staff at Winthrop, leads the Catamounts.

COUGARS ON THE AIRWAVESFans can listen to all CofC men’s basketball games throughout the 2018-19 season on ESPN Radio 910 AM and 94.7 FM in Charleston or via a live audio link at: www.charlestonsportsradio.com. THE ROAD AHEAD ...The Cougars will play five of their next six games away from the friendly confines of TD Arena with two weekend road trips to Western Carolina (Nov. 10) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 18). They will later travel to the AdvoCare Invitational on Nov. 22, 23 & 25 in Orlando, Fla. CofC will open that tournament with preseason No. 23-ranked LSU in the opening round on Nov. 22 on ESPN2.

SERIES HISTORYCollege of Charleston holds a 22-7 advantage in the all-time series with Western Carolina. The Cougars have won the last six-straight meetings between the two schools. Aside from Davidson, WCU has been the most continuous series against a former Southern Conference rival since CofC joined the Colonial in 2013.

EARLIEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORYFor College of Charleston, the Presbyterian game on Nov. 6 marked the earliest start in program history. The Cougars previously opened the 2013-14 regular season at defending national champion and No. 3-ranked Louisville (L, 48-70) on Nov. 9, 2013 in Louisville, Kentucky, and hosted Towson (W, 75-58) on Nov. 9, 2012 at TD Arena.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOMECofC is currently tied with Houston with the second-longest active home winning streak (17 wins) in the country after going an undefeated 14-0 at TD Arena in 2017-18. Only South Dakota State (22) has a longer home-court winning streak in NCAA Division I. Others included on that elite list: Montana (15), Utah Valley (14), St. Bonaventure (13), North Carolina A&T (13) and Buffalo (12).

COFC IN SEASON OPENERSThe Cougars are now 16-2 all-time in home openers since 1991-92. Last year, they opened the season winning a 68-60 overtime thriller over Siena on Nov. 10, 2017 at TD Arena. In the Earl Grant Era, CofC is now 5-0 in season openers.

WHAT’S BACKThe Cougars, defending Colonial Athletic Association champions, return three starters and 10 letterwinners from last year’s NCAA Tournament squad. CofC boasts two preseason All-CAA First Team selections in junior guard Grant Riller (18.6 ppg) and senior forward Jarrell Brantley (17.3 ppg).

Head Coach Earl Grant is in his fifth season at College of Charleston.

A former Lowcountry prep star out of R.B. Stall High School, Grant led the Cougars to a memorable run in 2017-18 that included the program’s second-straight 25-win campaign, an impressive 26-8 overall record and 14-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. The co-regular-season champions earned the No. 1 seed in the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship and defeated No. 2 seed Northeastern in an overtime thriller to punch the program’s first ticket to the NCAA Tournament since 1999.

In addition, the Cougars went an undefeated 14-0 at home at TD Arena, won 11-straight games including 14 of their last 16 and produced four all-conference honorees in All-CAA First Team selections Joe Chealey and Grant Riller. Jarrell Brantley was also named to the All-CAA Second Team and Cameron Johnson to the CAA All-Defensive Team for the third year in a row. It also marked the first season in program history to have four 1,000-career point scorers on the roster in Chealey, Johnson, Brantley and Riller.

In 2016-17, Grant led the Cougars to a 25-10 overall record and 14-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. It marked the program’s first 20-win campaign since 2013. Charleston, seeded a program-best No. 2, advanced to the championship game of the CAA Tournament for the first time since CofC joined the Colonial in 2013. They were also selected and made their fifth all-time appearance in the Postseason NIT. It was their first postseason berth (NCAA or NIT) since 2011.

In his second season with the Cougars, he and his staff turned the program into one of the most improved in NCAA Division I and developed four all-conference players including Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and All-CAA Third Team selection Jarrell Brantley – the first freshman to receive such honors since 2006.

Known as a top recruiter, Grant has also signed back-to-back recruiting classes that will help the Cougars continue to contend for CAA Championships. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson under Brad Brownell, where he made a positive impact on the Tiger men’s basketball program, both in recruiting and with player development. He worked primarily with Clemson’s point guards.

A former student-athlete, Grant played two years at the NCAA Division II level at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga. He led the school to two appearances in the NCAA Tournament and to consecutive Peach Belt Conference Championships (1999 and 2000). In 2000, the Bobcats advanced all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II national tournament. He was named an All-Peach Belt First Team selection in 2000.

A native of North Charleston, S.C., Grant earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgia College in 2000. He and his wife, Jacci, a 2001 College of Charleston graduate receiving a degree in elementary education, have three sons: Trey (12), Eyzaiah (10) and Elonzo (7).

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE RECAPCollege of Charleston 85, Presbyterian College 73• College of Charleston went with the starting five of Zep Jasper, Grant Riller, Brevin Galloway, Jarrell Brantley and Nick Harris. It marked the first career starts for Jasper and Galloway. • With the win, the Cougars have now won seven-straight meetings in the all-time series with Presbyterian College. It was the first meeting for both schools since 1996.• CofC is now 16-2 all-time in home openers since its first season as a NCAA Division I member in 1991-92. In the Earl Grant Era, the Cougars are a perfect 5-0 in season openers.• Grant Riller registered a game-high 27 points including 7-of-8 made free throws against Presbyterian. It marked his 18th career 20-point outing.• Jarrell Brantley recorded his 24th career double-double with 19 points and game-high 14 rebounds versus Presbyterian.• Redshirt freshman Zep Jasper scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field in his collegiate debut.• Freshman Isaih Moore came off the bench and tallied 13 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes of action against Presbyterian. He also made one of the team’s six three-pointers on the night.• The Cougars have now won 17-straight games at TD Arena since the end of the 2016-17 season.• The November 6th game against PC marked the earliest start in program history.

COUGAR SOUNDBITES“I knew Presbyterian would challenge us, because of the fact that they had a lot of seniors and we were going to play our freshmen. Jaylen McManus just got back and we played him a good amount of minutes. I thought it would take awhile for us to adjust in the game. I knew they (PC) would make some threes and we would have to make sure to challenge every shot. The next game is going to be mental for us. We are going to play at 12 o’clock on Saturday and up in the mountains. We have to really come up with our game plan the next few days, before we go up there. It will be a mental contest.” – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant on the team’s adjustment in the Presbyterian game and easing into the schedule with Western Carolina up next

“There’s a lot more interaction between me and the point guards for sure this year. But, that’s normal. For the last three years, the guy who was running the point and quarterbacking the ship, he (Joe Chealey) had figured out my mind. He knew what I was thinking before I could say it. Now, Zep (Jasper) is trying to figure it out. I always felt he would be an unbelievable leader and an unbelievable point guard. He has a very bright future.” – Grant on the play of redshirt freshman point guard Zep Jasper

“Zep is a great player, but still has a lot to learn. But, that comes with time. He just played his first college game. He plays and shoots the ball well. You never have to question how hard he plays. He will help us out a lot this year.” – Junior Guard Grant Riller on the addition of Zep Jasper in the lineup

“We have so many great pieces on our team. If we (Grant Riller and I) do our part, we have a lot of other guys that can help us out and we will be okay. We have a lot more depth this year.” – Senior Forward Jarrell Brantley on stepping-up offensively this year to replace the scoring of Joe Chealey

CAA PRESEASON HONORSCollege of Charleston senior forward Jarrell Brantley and junior guard Grant Riller were honored on the preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team. The Cougars, who received five first-place votes, were picked to finish second in a vote of the league’s coaches, media relations directors and media members. Northeastern received 35 first-place votes followed by Hofstra in third, William & Mary in fourth, UNCW in fifth, James Madison in sixth, Delaware in seventh, Elon in eighth, Drexel in ninth and Towson in 10th. Riller ranked fourth in the league in scoring (18.6 ppg) and made the All-CAA First Team a year ago, while Brantley tallied 17.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest to gain a spot on the All-CAA Second Team. They are joined in the starting lineup by senior forward Nick Harris (5.9 ppg and 6.5 rpg). 2018-19 CAA MEN’S BASKETBALL PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH (first-place votes)1. Northeastern (35) 3592.
