FIRST PITCHTexas Tech returns to the road for a two-game midweek series at defending NCAA College World Series national champion No. 16 Arizona (March 5-6) with both games being played at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. The Red Raiders are coming off a se-ries win over La Salle in Lubbock last weekend and have won three of their last four games overall. Tech will be playing their sixth and seventh games away from home as they played five games in Florida during the final week of February. Tech won its series over La Salle with back-to-back shutouts and have held opponents to just eight runs in seven home games. Ari-zona is 10-3 overall and nationally ranked by all four major publications. The Wildcats are 9-2 at home and 2-2 in midweek games while last week splitting a home midweek series with Utah Valley - who Tech will host next week in midweek action.

TIM TADLOCK & PLAYER INTERVIEWSPractices are open to the media and the public. Practices will normally begin at 2:30 p.m. and end around 5 p.m. Interviews will begin one hour prior to the start of practice in the Baseball Stadium Club area - located on the second level of the stadium down the right-field line. The normally scheduled off day is Monday. All media in attendance are required to view practice from the stands. No media will be allowed on the field once interviews are complete. Tim Tadlock was named head coach of the Texas Tech baseball program on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country, Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes at Oklahoma while helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995. Tadlock worked with the Red Raider defense during the 2012 season where they finished with a .971 fielding percentage, which ranks second all-time at Texas Tech. Following his first season at Tech, the Red Raiders had a record-breaking Major League Baseball Draft as nine Texas Tech players were selected – a new school record. Included in the signees were center fielder Barrett Barnes, who became the third highest draft pick in Tech history as he was taken in the supplemental first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 45th overall pick. Also taken were second baseman Jamodrick McGruder (9th Round – Seattle), right-handed pitcher Shane Broyles (14th Round – Colorado), right-handed pitcher Duke

von Schamann (15th Round – Los Angeles Dodgers), catcher Bo Altobelli (21st Round – Minnesota), third baseman Reid Redman (23rd Round – Tampa Bay), left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe (25th Round – Los Angeles Dodgers), right-handed pitcher John Neely (30th Round – Houston) and left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn (31st Round – Seattle). The nine MLB Draft selections tied for the second most by any NCAA program while only Arizona State (10) had more. Nine draft picks marked the fifth most in Big 12 history. In addition, five of Tech’s position players earned All-Big 12 recognition during Tadlock’s first season at Tech, includ-ing McGruder (first team), Barnes (first team), first baseman Scott LeJeune (second team), Altobelli (honorable mention) and shortstop Tim Proudfoot (All-Freshman Team). It didn’t take Tadlock long to make his mark on the recruiting trail at Oklahoma, as his 2006 recruiting class ranked fourth nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The No. 4 ranking was the best for the Sooners since 1987. Tadlock also had top-25 nationally ranked recruiting classes by Baseball America in 2006 (11th), 2009 (16th), 2010 (21st) and 2012 (13th). In addition, OU’s 2012 recruiting class received a No. 4 ranking this fall by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. During his tenure at Oklahoma (2006-2011), the Sooners made five trips to the NCAA Tournament with two Super Rgional appearances in 2006 and 2010 while making it back to the College World Series in Omaha in 2010. It marked OU’s first time to make five post-season appearances in a six year span since 1987-1992. The Sooners had unparalleled success at the plate under Tadlock’s guidance. Oklahoma batted over .300 during all six of his seasons – first time for OU since 1995-2000 – and his 2009 and 2010 clubs combined for 195 home runs, the most ever at Oklahoma in consecutive seasons while leading the Big 12 in homers both years. The Sooners 104 home runs in 2010 rank second all-time in Oklahoma history. While an assistant at Oklahoma, Tadlock mentored 41 players who were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft. In 2011 the Sooners had 11 players taken in the draft which tied an all-time Big 12 record (Texas, 2007). In fact, during three of Tadlock’s six years with the Sooners at least nine players were taken in the draft. After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000). Overall, Tadlock guided the Grayson program to five championships along with five District V championships and while eight Vikings earned All-America honors during his tenure as head coach. The Red Raiders benefited from six players that transferred to Tech from Tadlock’s program at Grayson while he was head coach. Included in those student-athletes are Texas Tech All-American shortstop Cameron Blair (2004-05) and former Major League catcher Trey Lunsford (1999-00). During his tenure at Grayson (1997-2005), Tadlock recorded the highest winning percentage of any collegiate baseball coach, including all two and four-year institutions, with a .774 winning percentage. While at Grayson, Tadlock also served as the school’s director of athletics, a position he began in August 2000. After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders while helping Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). In his two-year career at Tech, Tadlock played in 120 games, batted .289 (120-for-415) with 96 runs scored, 19 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 68 RBI, 71 walks, 65 strikeouts and was 28-of-41 in stolen bases. Tadlock played for legendary coach Larry Hays while at Texas Tech. Tadlock graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in May 1992. He also earned a master’s degree in education in August 1994 from the University of Texas at Tyler. Tadlock and his wife, Kelly, have two children, daughter, Chloe (11 – April 10), and son, Benjamin (9 – Aug. 4). Tadlock is originally from Denton, Texas and was born December 21, 1968.

ON THE HORIZONTech returns home after its midweek road trip to Arizona to open a five-game homestand against UT Arlington (Mar. 8-10) and Utah Valley (Mar. 12-13) before opening Big 12 play in Austin against Texas, March 15-17.

ARIZONA ALL-TIME SERIESTexas Tech is 4-10 all-time against Arizona with the series dating back 41 years to the first-ever meeting between these two programs. The Red Raiders are 2-10 against the Wildcats in Tucson while there have been just two neutral site games (both wins by Tech) and Arizona has yet to make an appearance in Lubbock on the diamond. Tech won the last two meetings as these two programs haven’t faced off since 1993. The Red Raiders defeated the Wildcats 11-8 in the most recent game on March 20, 1993 in Fresno, Calif., at the Johnny Quik Classic. Tech also defeated Arizona 4-0 earlier during that neutral site classic a few days earlier on March 17. The Red Raiders have won three of the last six meetings while Arizona claimed the previous seven straight - all coming in Tucson. Arizona defeated Tech 12-1 in the most recent meeting in Tucson on Febru-ary 16, 1974. Tech’s last win in Tucson came on Feb. 28, 1973 (3-1) and the Red Raiders won the first-ever meeting, which was played in Tucson on March 6, 1972 (5-2).

TEXAS TECH VS. PAC-12 OPPONENTSTexas Tech is 16-43 all-time against current Pac-12 opponents. The Red Raiders most common opponent in the league is Arizona State (19 meetings, ASU leads 14-5) while 14 games against the Arizona Wildcats marks Tech’s second most com-mon foe. Last season the Red Raiders defeated the Sun Devils in Tempe while the most recent Tech vs. Pac-12 opponent came in 2010 when Washington State took a pair of games in Lubbock during an early-season non-conference tourney.

NATIONAL POLLSTEXAS TECH RANKS 20TH IN NATIONAL ATTENDANCE AVERAGE; 22ND IN TOTAL HOME ATTENDANCEThrough the opening three weeks of the college baseball season, Texas Tech ranks 20th in the nation - third in the Big 12 - averaging 2,510 fans per home game. Tech is ranked 22nd in the nation in total home attendance (17,571). This is nothing new for the Red Raiders who have ranked among the top 31 college baseball programs in the nation in attendance the last 17 years (since 1996).

TEXAS TECH HOLDS La SALLE SCORELESS IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMESTexas Tech shut out La Salle in back-to-back games to win its first head-to-head weekend series of the season. Tech blanked La Salle 3-0 in game two of the series and then clinched the three-game set with a 7-0 shutout in the series finale. It marked the first time Tech had back-to-back shutouts since 2001 (21-0 & 25-0 vs. Howard - Opening Weekend). Junior RHP Trey Masek pitched a nine-inning, complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk in the first shutout on Saturday, March 2. The following day, freshman RHP Matt Withrow struck out eight in seven scoreless frames while leading Tech to a 7-0 win.

RED RAIDERS HOLDING OPPONENTS SCORELESS AT A RECORD PACETexas Tech has posted four shutout wins during its first 12 games this season. The last time the Red Raiders had that many shutouts in its first 12 games was in 1994 when the Red Raiders had four shutouts in the first 11 games of the season. One area history couldn’t stop the 2013 Red Raiders was recording shutout wins at home during the early going while Tech has four shutouts during its first seven home games. That has never been done in 64 years of baseball at Texas Tech.

TECH SETS SCHOOL RECORD ALLOWING EIGHT RUNS DURING THE FIRST SEVEN HOME GAMESTexas Tech allowed only eight runs during its first seven home games of the 2013 season to set a new school record for the fewest amount of runs allowed during the first seven home games of the season. The previous record was 11 runs allowed by the 1957 and 1972 Red Raiders.

BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS GIVES RED RAIDERS 18 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGSTexas Tech’s pitching staff closed the third weekend of the regular season with back-to-back shutouts - giving the Red Raiders 18 consecutive scoreless innings. The last time Tech was able to put together 18 consecutive scoreless innings was to start the 2001 campaign when Tech put together 19 straight scoreless frames.

TREY MASEK STARTS SEASON WITH 24 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGSTexas Tech junior RHP Trey Masek put together three impressive starts to open the 2013 season. In fact, Masek recorded 24 consecutive scoreless innings while not allowing a run during his first three starts of the season. Masek’s third start included a nine-inning, complete-game shutout that saw him strike out a career-high 12 batters (the most by a Red Raider pitcher since 2010) and not allow a walk while giving up just six hits in his first career complete game. It did mark his sec-ond straight nine-inning performance, but the previous start resulted in a no decision as Tech lost 1-0 in 11 innings after Masek’s day was complete after nine frames. After three starts, Masek led the Big 12 in innings pitched (24.0), strikeouts (27) and ERA (0.00).

BURLESON TALLIES 11-GAME HIT STREAK TO OPEN 2013 SEASONSophomore second baseman Bryant Burleson opened the 2013 season with a career-high 11-game hit streak that spanned from Opening Day on Feb. 15 until Mar. 2. Burleson had his streak come to an end going 0-for-3 with a walk on Sunday, March 3. Burleson batted .395 (17-for-43) during the streak with 10 runs, a double, six RBI, eight walks, two hit-by-pitch and posted a .500 on-base percentage and a .419 slugging percentage.

RED RAIDERS ARE 19-1 WHEN WELCOMING A FIRST-TIME OPPONENT TO LUBBOCK SINCE 2010The La Salle three-game series marked the 11th first-time opponent to play the Red Raiders in Lubbock since 2010. Tech is now 19-1 when taking on a first-time opponent for the weekend or in a midweek series since 2010. Below is a look at each of the opponents. TREY MASEK NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEKJunior right-handed pitcher Trey Masek became the 15th Texas Tech pitcher to be named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week when he was recognized on Monday, Feb. 25. Masek was named the league’s top pitcher following a nine-inning shutout performance against Connecticut at the UCF Weekend Classic in Orlando. He ended up taking a no decision after striking out seven in a career-high nine innings of work. He was perfect through three innings retiring all nine batters and went on to retire 16 of the first 17 UConn batters he faced. He became the first Red Raider to pitch nine scoreless innings in a game since 2007 when A.J. Ramos pitched a nine-inning complete-game shutout against Kansas in Lubbock.

MASEK TURNS IN DOMINATING PERFORMANCE DURING NO DECISION AGAINST UCONNJunior RHP Trey Masek pitched nine shutout innings with seven strikeouts allowing five base hits and one walk in a no deci-sion against UConn on Sunday, Feb. 24 in Orlando. The Red Raiders lost the game 1-0 in 11 innings, Masek exited after nine scoreless frames while tossing 100 pitches (68 strikes). Here are a few notes about Masek in his impressive performance. - Nine innings marked a career-high (previous career-high was 7.2 IP during first career start vs. Iowa on 3/12/11). - Became the first Red Raider to pitch nine innings since Duke von Schamann did it twice in 2012. - Became the first Red Raider to pitch nine scoreless innings since April 20, 2007 (AJ Ramos - 9 IP, CG, vs. KU). - Marked his second straight scoreless start (6 IP, 0 R vs. BYU in season debut). - Became the first Red Raider with back-to-back scoreless starts since 2009 (AJ Ramos - 3 straight to open 2009). - Retired first nine batters faced. - Retired 16 of the first 17 batters faced. - Struck out at least one batter in five of his nine innings pitched. - Finished outing retiring seven of the final eight batters he faced.

RECORD BREAKDOWNBURLESON & CO. HELPING RED RAIDERS TURN DOUBLE PLAYS UP THE MIDDLETexas Tech has turned at least one double play in 11-of-12 games this season. That marks the longest streak for the Red Raiders since turning at least one double play in nine straight games during the 2010 season. Tech currently leads the Big 12 Conference with 17 double plays on the season. In the middle of most of those double plays are sophomore infielders Tim Proudfoot and Bryant Burleson along with junior Jake Barrios. Burleson has turned a team-high 12 double plays while Proudfoot and Barrios have each turned six double plays on the season.

RED RAIDERS VISIT SUNSHINE STATE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1998Texas Tech played five games in five days in the state of Florida while visiting the Sunshine state for the first time since 1998. The Red Raiders played three games in Orlando (UCF Weekend Classic) and two games in Miami (at FIU). Tech is now 5-6 all-time in the state of Florida while it has only played three opponents that hails from the state (Miami in 1998 and UCF and FIU in 2013). Tech’s first appearance in Florida came in 1996 at the Olive Garden Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., where Tech faced North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest - all coming on a neutral field. TECH FALLS 1-0 AGAINST UCONN IN FINAL GAME AT UCF WEEKEND CLASSICTexas Tech lost its final game of the UCF Weekend Classic with a 1-0 shutout coming against Connecticut on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando. The shutout marked Tech’s first 1-0 loss since 2008 and its first 1-0 blanking away from home since 1991 when the Red Raiders lost against Texas in Austin.

RED RAIDERS HOLD UCONN HUSKIES SCORELESS FOR 10 INNINGS - LONGEST STREAK SINCE 1993Its not every day that you see a team held scoreless for 10 consecutive innings in one game. The Red Raiders accomplished this feat holding UConn scoreless for the first 10 innings of its contest in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday, Feb. 24. It marked the first time Tech held its opponent scoreless for 10 consecutive innings since March 5, 1993 during a Tech 1-0 victory in 10 innings over Baylor in Lubbock.

RED RAIDERS IN ROAD/NEUTRAL SITE OPENERSTexas Tech is now 28-36 all-time in its road/neutral site openers of the season after losing to Troy, 3-10 on Friday, Feb. 22 in Orlando. Tech is 2-6 all-time in neutral site games when it marks Tech’s first game away from home in the season while all of those meetings have come since 2001.

TEXAS TECH OPENS 4-0 FOR 14TH TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY - 7TH TIME SINCE 1997Texas Tech has opened the season 4-0 for the 14th time in school history and just the seventh time since 1997. The Red Raiders have also opened 4-0 in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002 and 1999.

TEXAS TECH BREAKS 41-YEAR RECORD ALLOWING JUST TWO RUNS DURING OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech broke a school record holding its opponents to just two runs during the first four games of the season. The Red Raiders broke a 41-year old record that was held by the 1972 Red Raiders who allowed five runs during their opening four games. Tech outscored its opponents 36-2 during its first four games of the season.

TECH PITCHING STAFF OPENS SEASON WITH 12 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS & TWO SHUTOUTSTexas Tech’s pitching staff opened the season holding its opponents scoreless for the first 12 innings of the year. Also during the opening weekend, Tech held its opponents scoreless for 10 straight innings and then finished the first weekend of the season putting together another 10 scoreless innings streak.

MORENO HAS MEMORABLE RED RAIDER DEBUTSophomore right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno opened his Tech career with a memorable Opening Day performance while leading the Red Raiders to an 8-0 shutout win over Northern Illinois. Moreno struck out 11 batters in six shutout in-nings while allowing five hits and three walks while throwing 97 pitches. Moreno’s strikeout total marked the most by a Red Raider on Opening Day in over 17 years. His strikeout total also marked the most by any Red Raider during a career debut in over 12 years - the previous mark was eight set by Juan Razo at TCU on Feb. 22, 2003. In addition, Moreno’s six innings in his career debut marked the most by a Red Raider on Opening Day since current Cleveland Indians RHP Josh Tomlin also threw six innings on Opening Day for Tech in 2006 vs. Louisiana-Monroe.

TECH LEADS THE WAY WITH EIGHT BROOKS WALLACE MEMORIAL CLASSIC ALL-TOURNEY TEAM SELECTIONSThe Red Raiders had a perfect 4-0 record during the opening weekend while BYU and Northern Colorado each went 2-2 and Northern Illinois went 0-4 in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. Tech had eight All-Tournament team selections, including 2B Bryant Burleson (Most Outstanding Player), C Jarrard Poteete, SS Tim Proudfoot, OF Devon Conley, DH Eric Gutierrez, RHP Dominic Moreno (Starting Pitcher), RHP Matt Withrow (Starting Pitcher) and RHP Nathan Bauder (Closer).

BURLESON NAMED BROOKS WALLACE MEMORIAL CLASSIC MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYERSophomore second baseman Bryant Burleson was named the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic Most Outstanding Player while leading the Red Raiders to a 4-0 record during the opening weekend of the season. Burleson hit safely in each game, tallied a pair of multi-hit games while batting .500 (6-for-12) with six runs, a double, three RBI, four walks, struck out just once and recorded 14 assists and five putouts with four double plays at second base while not committing an error.

CONLEY HITS INSIDE-THE-PARK HOMER FOR FIRST CAREER HR - AND FIRST FOR TECH IN 2013Junior outfielder Devon Conley hit the first home run of the season for the Red Raiders, but his home run didn’t leave the ballpark as he hit an inside-the-park homer to center field which ended with a three-run homer. Conley became the first Red Raider to hit an inside-the-park home run since February 24, 2012 when Barrett Barnes hit a three-run inside-the-park home run vs. No. 18 St. John’s at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Conley is the third Red Raider to hit a home run inside the park since 2010 while former Red Raider Nick Popescu also hit a three-run inside-the-park home run at home against Bethune-Cookman on February 27, 2010.

Junior reliever Jonny Drozd earned the win while pitching the final two innings of the game while not allowing a run. Tech is now 4-0 in the alumni game - which dates back to 2010.
