It has been quite sometimes since I last went to a basketball game. Growing up basketball

was not a common sport, because it required a proper court, but in high school I got the chance

to be on a team to basically play and did not really have to understand the ins and outs of the

game that much. Yet, with the university basketball game that I had for game review, the rules of

the game were advance and the technicality of it was quite overwhelming. Nevertheless, I will

try my best, with the support of TWU’s Spartan Game Review website, to help me reflect back

on the game that day.

Roaster: Trinity Western Spartans Women versus Thompson Rivers WolfPack

Date: January 25th, 2014. Time: 5pm.

Recaps:1st Quarter: Starting of the game, the Spartans had smooth plays and was well organized as

each player was energetic and excited about the game. In the first five minutes number 9, 13, and

3 led the Spartans ahead with a few great shots resulted in 2 – 8. Throughout the period there

were substitutes when the balls went out of bound. Within last five minutes of 1st period, the

Wolfpack had a number of steals and rebounds, and as the game continues they kept on making

more baskets. Spartans were consistent in their plays, and their scores were not as productive

since they started. Then, Spartan sent in three substitutes in the last 3 minutes of the game. Last

two minutes of the game, Wolfpack was leading by 4 points, but then the Spartans came back to

tie the 1st period with a score 18 – 18.

2nd Quarter: Starting the period, new substitutes were sent in from the Wolfpack. Two

minutes into the game, the Wolfpack switched another two substitutes, and they had a 3-points

lead. Within 3 to 4 minutes of the game, the battle of baskets was raging as the two teams tried to

score each other. The score was neck-to-neck. Then, five minutes into the game the result was 30

– 27 for Wolfpack, and the Spartans sent in two substitutes. As the game continues, in the last

three minutes of the period, the Spartans substituted three other players again. Among fouls,

rebound, lay ups, and jump shots the 2nd period ended with 38 – 33 for the Wolfpack.

3rd Quarter: Started off, each team did not substitute any of their players. Three minutes in,

the Spartan got their feet again, and with good rebounds, jump shots, and lay ups they tied the

score board with 38 – 38. Then, after the Wolfpack scored the next basket, the Spartans

substituted two of their players. Then, within the next 4 minutes, two sets of substitutes were

changed for the Spartans. Within the Spartan substitutions’ intervals, the Wolfpack did only two

substitutions. They led the score with 48 – 38. The game continued with one time-out from the

Spartans. At the end of the 3rd period the Wolfpack led 54 – 43.

4th Quarter: The plays in the fourth period were sporadic in term of score. The Spartans

defended their baskets well, while attempted to score the Wolfpack now and again. The Spartans

continued to replace substitutions more than the Wolfpack in this period. Then, both teams

continued to score, but the Spartans were short in their baskets. Close to the finishing of the

game the Wolfpack called for a time-out: making strategy to shut out the Spartans. At the end of

the game, the Wolfpack won the game with 63 – 51.

Final Thought of the Game:

As a spectator, the comparison of the two teams was quite similar in height and speed.

Although that was true, each team chose to play a different style game. For the Spartans, they

chose to do a man-to-man strategy for their defensive plays, while the Wolfpack chose to do a

zone defense. With the zone defense the Wolfpack had both advantage and disadvantage as they

kept the Spartan players on the outside most of the time. However, for the first two periods the

Spartans were able to score frequently from the outside. Into the third and fourth period, the

Spartans fell behind as the Wolfpack got the advantage as man-to-man strategy did not work so

well in their favor.

Overall, I thought the flow of the game was quite sporadic from time to time. There were

both quick and slow paces as each team tried to concentrate on their various teammates’

performance. The energy levels were definitely decreasing as the time went by. Yet, each player

defended and did their best as they engaged and worked together among their strategic plans.

Taken as a whole, the game was engaging, exciting, and educational. For me, the perks of the

game was definitely during the second period. As a learner of basketball game, I learned a lot

from the plays as well as the rules, techniques, stop clocks, and the progress/flow of the game.
