“Old” vs. “New”The “old” components are the competition materials thatare already installed on the competition set and will beremoved by the competitor. The “new” componentsare the competition materials that the competitor willinstall on the competition set. The competition materialsare either unmarked or color coded with red markingsso the judge can make sure that all the old componentsare removed and all the new components are installed.Do not mix the color-coded items, as this will createconfusion in judging whether all requirements werecompleted.

ThreadingSeveral games require the competitor to thread oneitem onto another item, such as threading the locknutson the water fittings. The competitor must threadthe pieces together so the locknut remains in placeand does not separate from the other component. The competitor does not need to completely threadthe item until it stops.

Race Car Competition

Each game is open to every Maintenance Mania participant. People who are interested in competingfor the National Championship must register for National Championship Qualifying Competitor status and must compete in all eight games.

The games are timed and designed for competitors tocomplete each game in 20 to 45 seconds. All competitorshave a second chance to improve their time at anyone game excluding the race car competition.

An affiliate will be able to handle between 60 and100 competitors per hour at each game.

The skill-based competition games have been designedso there is a minimal amount of time required for the volunteer judges to reset the game station for the next competitor.

Race Car MaterialsThe official race car wheels are provided by NAAto the local affiliate. Affiliates then distribute thewheels as competitors register to participate in theevent. All cars entered in the race car competitionmust use the wheels provided by the Association.

• The race car must use at least three maintenance supply parts.

• Participants can use maintenance supplies to build body parts, accessories, engines, scoops or whatever!

• The cars will be raced down a ramp, so participants must keep speed in mind if they want to win the Maintenance Maniac award.

• Axles are not provided by the local affiliate. • Alignment is very important in ensuring the race

car will run straight down the track. • Axles need to be parallel to each other and

perpendicular to (square to) the car for the best performance. This keeps cars off the sidewalls, which decreases the run times.

• Axles are typically a 1/8" diameter rod, which can be purchased at a hobby store (or a welding rod, 8d nail, etc.).

• The rod can be placed in a hole drilled in the body. • Participants can add a bearing sleeve of some

sort (1/8" diameter brass or nylon tubing) and attach the sleeve to the body.

• Participants may drive nails through the wheels and into the body of the car for a simple axle.

• The wheels will usually “friction fit” onto a 1/8" diameter rod and stay attached to the axle.

• Participants may glue the wheels onto the axle. • Participants can lubricate their wheels with solid

lubricant such as powdered graphite or Teflon. (Many hobby shops carry lubricants for pinewoodderby cars.)

Liquid lubricants such as WD-40 and 3-in-One arenot allowed as they cause an irregular racing surfaceand may cause permanent damage to the track.

Fast Car Secrets for Participants1. Have well-aligned wheels.2. Have a low center of gravity.3. Be close to but not over the weight limit.4. Attach bumpers or rollers to keep the car fromgetting caught on the sidewalls.5. If using bumpers or rollers, keep them low sothey will hit the racetrack sidewalls, which are only1/2" high.
