This is an extraordinary pink-painted delicately honeycombed hive with 953 windows and niches that rises a dizzying five stories. It was constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh to enable ladies of the royal household to watch the life and processions of the city. This place was the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1570 and 1586. Emperor Akbar built the city to celebrate the birth of a heir (the future Emperor Jehangir), but the Imperial complex was abandoned in 1585, shortly after its completion, due to the exhaustion of the small, spring-fed lake that supplied the city with water, and its proximity with the Rajputana, with which the Mughal Empire was often at war.
