Twice each year, once in the fall and again in the spring, the Garden City Public Schools announce courses and leisure time activities presented through our Continuing Education Program. A number of residents serve on the Advisory Council to this program and, through their efforts, a wide variety of opportunities are selected for inclusion. I hope you will take the time to look through this brochure. I am sure that you will find something of interest that will enhance your understanding, your competencies, or broaden your scope of leisure and recreational activities. 102. BASIC FURNITURE REFINISHING AND REPAIRS-- ANTIQUE RESTORATION Mark Mesnick Students will be taught basic refinishing and repair techniques from a refinishing professional. Learn the industry secrets including basic repairs and antique restoration. Basic techniques such as furniture stripping, prepping, gluing, color-matching and selecting the proper finish for their project will be taught. Class is designed for students of all levels. 105. TIN CUP NECKLACE Judy Mak Did you see the necklace Renee Russo wore in the movie, Tin Cup with Kevin Costner? A designer made this necklace especially for Renee in this movie and now the necklace is popular with brides, bridesmaids and anyone who loves a simple elegant necklace with pearls. We will make three versions of this necklace, one with pearls and beading wire, with a matching bracelet and another multi-strand using pearls and crystals and finally a Tin Cup “floating” pearl necklace. 106. MAH JONGG Alex Pollack Upon completion of this class, students will be familiar with all you need to know so you can start to enjoy or refresh your enjoyment of Mah Jongg. Your dynamic instructor will teach the National Mah Jongg League rules. Bring your friends or make new ones—either way, you will be able to play a round after only 25-20 minutes. 107. MAGIC AS A HOBBY John Lepre Looking to launch a new hobby and surprise your family and friends? Looking for a unique icebreaker to use in your next business encounter or presentation? This class starts out teaching magic with ordinary objects such as playing cards, coins, ropes and rubber bands. An ability to perform impromptu magic anywhere and any time is quickly gained. The class then moves on to magic with selected props and mathematical oddities. The instructor of the class is an experienced professional magician who will teach you magic effects that work in real-life situations. A kit is provided and it contains all the tools needed to perform your magical miracles. To continue your magical education a list of books, web sites and local magic clubs will be provided. DEFENSIVE DRIVING Gary Quartararo Completion of this National Safety Council approved classroom course in crash avoidance techniques enables licensed drivers to apply for a decrease in the liability and collision portions of their auto insurance for three years. Also, a 4-point credit is applied to existing points on a person's driving record accumulated in the 18 months prior to the course completion.

201 . KAYAKING NATURE TRIP DATE: SAT.- SEPT. 25

Participants will receive kayak instructions before heading out to the wetlands of the South Shore of Long Island. Wandering up an opening that meanders through a marsh island, our group leader will point out the flora and fauna of this important ecological region of the South Shore. The trip will be facilitated by Empire Kayak of Island Park and will involve paddling on sit-on-top kayaks for approximately 1 ½ hours in calm waters. 300. S.A.T. REASONING TESTS This course provides 15 hours of class instruction. Test-taking techniques, strategies, exercise and structured review of the new SAT materials are covered. The newest and most recent changes in the tests will be stressed in the practice exercises. Instructors are Garden City High School teachers experienced in teaching SAT review courses. Mr. Stu Dods (Math Coordinator) and Amy Regis (English Teacher) Review book included in the fee. This course is only for 11th and 12th graders who are taking the S.A.T. This course is not for 10th or 11th graders taking the PSAT.

Do not be fooled by the price of this course - your child will be challenged and

401. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE UNIVERSE TODAY? Kevin Manning Astrophysicist and former NASA consultant Kevin Manning looks into a modern understanding of matter and energy and how it is distributed throughout the cosmos. Should we be concerned about December 21, 2012? What are the kinds of extraordinary events that occur in the Universe and how can they affect us? Answers to these and other questions regarding dark matter and dark energy shall be explored using outstanding photos and video segments. Following the presentation, a powerful telescope will be set up outdoors for viewing the Moon, the rings of Saturn and other beautiful objects in the sky, weather permitting. 400. THE PANAMA CANAL Doug Sheer

Starting as early as the 1600s, there had been interest in a canal that would cut through Central America and shave 8,000 miles off any voyage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Trace the history of this incredible project from the failed attempt by France to the success of the American effort in the early 1900s. With cruise ships sailing through the canal regularly, more and more people are experiencing this wonder of engineering. With slides illustrating the history of the canal as well as prospects for a new canal or a new series of locks, the importance of the Panama Canal will continue long into the future. LIBERATED LADIES: From “The Golden Girls” to “Sex and the City” Anna Katsavos, Ph.D. Professor of Literature This is a two-hour presentation that combines lecture, inter-active discussion, and TV clips from the two series, The Golden Girls and Sex and the City. 403. IRELAND - CASTLES AND COUNTRYSIDE Laurie Campbell Come join our slide lecture as we travel around Ireland. Our first stop will be Dublin, the capital of Ireland. From here, we will travel north along the beautiful Antrim Coast into Northern Ireland to visit Belfast and Londonderry, as well as the famed “Giant’s Causeway”. Returning back into southern Ireland, we will visit the Connemara coastline with Galway and its lovely bay. A feature here will be Aran Island with its traditional Irish culture. We will then see Bunratty Castle and Folk Park and continue south to the Dingle and Kerry Peninsulas. Cork city will be next with the famous Blarney Castle. Finally, we will end our tour of Ireland with where the Irish culture began - the Rock of Cashel - where King Angus was converted to Christianity by St. Patrick. 404. CLAIMED BY THE SEA—SHIPWRECKS & MARITIME DISASTERS Adam Grohman This lecture provides an intimate porthole into the past of a host of shipwrecks and maritime disasters that occurred in our local waters. Diver, researcher, and author Adam Grohman takes attendees on a virtual voyage into the past to explore the histories of the Savannah, Lexington, U.S.S. Ohio, Circassian, Seawanhaka, Oregon, Louis V, Place, Gerneral Slocum, U.S.S.San Deigo, Andrea Doria, Gwendoline Steers and many more fascinating aspects of maritime history. PayForIt (PFI) is a Secure Online Payment system which simplifies payment, collection and balancing of funds for School Districts.

PFI is a web-based portal system that is part of the QSP suite of products used in throughout the Garden City Public School District today. PFI was developed and is supported with the ongoing QSP philosophy of quick, simple and practical.

Garden City Public Schools now offers PFI for our Adult Education Program, to allow online registration and payment of fees.

*The payment process is automated for both the participants in the Adult Ed Program and the District so errors are minimized and the process is standardized.

How to sign up 1. Log on to www.payforit.net & select the “Sign Up” option from the menu. 2. PFI will guide you through screens to enter your contact data, payment information, and logon

information. You will also need to indicate your residency status (resident/non-resident) for fee pricing requirements.

3. PFI will establish an account for you and email a validation code for you to confirm the

registration. 4. Once your set up is confirmed you can begin using PFI as often as you’d like.

Choosing your course(s) 1. Once you are logged into PFI, navigate to the “Activities” menu. 2. PFI will guide you through the steps to choose your desired course(s).

*The courses available (with applicable fee) will be displayed to you. Note that some courses have a maximum enrollment limit. If the limit has been reached they will not be available to you. The Fees displayed to you will be based on your residency status.

*Once you’ve selected your desired course(s), you will need to “lock” your selection(s). This is necessary to ensure a concurrent user is not overlapping your request – particularly important when a course is approaching a space limitation.
