Garmin/Tri-Tronics Water Test

Judges Ken Reinhart of WISILL HRC, andMark Freis of Cowtown HRC, created aduck hunting scenario water test in aflooded grass and weed pond. VanessaEverett, Grand Site Coordinator, along withthe help of volunteers, began the transfor-mation process of this open pond to wellcamouflaged winger stations brushed in.Numerous floating and land Big Foot duckdecoys were strategically placed in front ofthe retriever and handler.

Once handlers made their way to thelast holding blind, they were greeted byJimbo Earles, Grand Committee Member. The handler/retriever team made theirway to the line and loaded three shells. The test was started by a duck call, andfollowed by three marks. Bird one cameout right to left off a levee, landing on theedge of the pond at 72 yards.

Bird two came out right to left off alevee landing behind moderate cover onthe bank at 92 yards. Bird three came offa levee, left to right, landing in the back ofthe pond at 82 yards. On the way backfrom the last mark, a diversion bird wasthrown left of the working line. After re-trieving the last bird, the retriever wassent to run a blind between mark two andthree at 112 yards.

2016 FALL GRAND CALL BACK REPORT390 Entered, 369 Ran, 134 Passed, 27 Earned Grand Hunting Retriever Championships

The 57th UKC/HRC International Grand was held Septem-ber 19-23, 2016 in the beautiful bluegrass country of Paducah,Kentucky. Central Kentucky Hunting Retriever Associationhosted the event on the West Kentucky WMA. At the close ofthe entries, 390 dogs were entered. Of those entries only 369dogs were called to line to start day one with hope of obtain-ing a Grand pass. After five series of tests, 134 dogs earned apass and 27 of those retrievers had the distinct honor of earn-ing a new title, Grand Hunting Retriever Champion.

The countless hours of planning by Central Kentucky, alongwith the hard work and dedication to host a great event, provedworthy. Many thanks to Tim Bach, Local Grand Chairman; TimWakefield, Local Grand Marshal; Paul Kartes, Local Grand Stew-ard; Don Hogan, Local Official Gun; Derek Beard, Local PR, andall the members of Central Kentucky. Tim Kreher, Public LandBiologist West KY WMA, went above and beyond to ensure thegrounds were ready for our arrival. Thank you, Tim and WestKentucky WMA, for your generosity and hospitality.

We were fortunate to have such a great group of youth asour bird techs. Thank you, Muhlenberg County High WildlifeResources. We would also like to extend special thanks to Dr.

Tony Schumann of Florence, Kentucky for acting as the on-site veterinarian.

We kicked off the event with the banquet sponsored byBayer Multi Advantage at the Robert Cherry Civic Center. Theday started out early as the Central Kentucky club membersstepped up to the plate preparing for the banquet. Puttingtogether Purina handler bags with Pro Plan dog food, hangingsponsor banners, setting up tables, organizing theAvery/Banded raffle, and list goes on until well after the lasthandler left the building.

Check-in finally arrived, and excitement filled the air as thehandlers made their way to check in with Diana Peacock,Grand Hunt Secretary. She greeted each handler with a smileand words of luck. The banquet was filled with laughter andtears as we reminisced about our good friend and Grand HuntChairman, the late Ernie Istre. Many moments of the eventwere captured and posted by Carrie Shaw, Grand Public Re-lations and Mark Atwater, Upclose Photography.

Congratulations, to all those handlers, owners and retriev-ers for a job well done passing the Grand and congratulationsto the new 27 Grand Hunting Retriever Champions.
