Read Across America Day Friday, March 2 at 10 a.m. at the library. Cosponsored by ACS and the library, join us in celebrating early literacy

and the love for books with our youngest children. Read Across Amer-

ica Day marks the birth of Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr.

Seuss, whose stories have won the hearts of generations of youngsters

and helped them gain a love of reading. In addition to stories and

songs, the Cat in the Hat will be our special guest. Sign up at ACS or

the library and receive a free gift.

No story time on Thursday, March 1 due to this special program.

National African American History Month Stop by the library and take a look at our special February display dedi-

cated to the 2012 theme: “Black Women in America: Culture and His-

tory”. The display will feature both familiar and less well known African

American women and highlight the roles they played and the contribu-

tions they made to the making of America. Take our short quiz and use

our online Biography reference resource to learn something new this

year!

Water Works! Saturday, February 4, 7:50 a.m. at the Garmisch Train Station Cost: Transportation - $15; Park entry €38 or €36 If you thought “Water Works” is only a semi-desirable property in Monopoly you might be wonder-

ing how does it work? Trust us! Water does Work! Water can be extremely therapeutic, relaxing,

calming, exhilarating, and lots of good fun! I am speaking especially of the absolute Disney-like

Water world known as the Erdinger Therme! A few reasons that make it is so are; the Kelo Sauna

is so big that it requires two people to perform the “Aufguss,” you can sit completely naked on a

marble barstool in a pool of water and drink alcoholic beverages with all your friends, you can fall

off the bar stool into the water and not hurt yourself, and there are fourteen different water slides – some of them have elevators

that go to the top! On Saturday, April 16, we meet at 7:50 a.m. at the Garmisch Train Station and don’t expect to be back before

midnight. Bring Euros for all the food and drink you plan to consume and bring €38 if you are doing the “full European experience”

or €36 if you are going to wear a swimsuit all day (it is cheaper if you want to avoid the fun in the “textile free” areas). It may seem

expensive but trust me: this one is extraordinary and worth every penny!

Carnevale in Venezia Friday, February 17 – Sunday, February 19 Cost: $290 One of our most asked about tours is Venice during the Carnival Season. Friday evening we de-

part Garmisch at 4:30 p.m. and head to Vicenza, arriving around 10:00 pm. Saturday morning

we will take a quick bus ride to the outskirts of Venice where we will take the train into Venice,

arriving around 8:45 am. We will then head to San Marco to participate in the festivities in

Piazza San Marco. There will be much carousing and endless jostling by the many tourists. Of

course, the best way to do this trip is “tutti in Maschera” but it is very unlikely that you will outdo

any Venetians in the quality of your masks and costumes! When the weather is cooperative, the

Italians do not hesitate to bring out their silks and genuine 18th century duds and the crowds love

it. Americans who think it is “like Halloween” or Germans who want to dress like it is Fasching

are just woefully outclassed! The crowds are happy if the Brits and Australians just wear any

clothing at all…

We will eventually make our way back to Vicenza on the 8:32pm train from Venice. Sunday, we will begin the journey back

to Garmisch with a stop off in Verona for a quick look at the old town and an opportunity to eat in an excellent restaurant. Ex-

pect to be back in Garmisch around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

Space on this trip is limited so get your money to me right away

Neuschwanstein Castle Monday, February 20 – 08:00 a.m. at the Pete Burke Community Center Cost: $39 The most popular tourist attraction in Germany is Neuschwanstein Castle. Tour buses arrive and dis-

pense hordes of people every day! As opposed to most of the tours that concentrate on the scandalous

upbringing of Ludwig and his “tragedy,” This tour is called Ludwig and Richard and focuses on the fa-

mous composer as well as the shy king. Essential to an understanding of the “Ludwig World” is an ac-

quaintance with the world of nineteenth century German politics and there will be some talk about that

as well! In addition to Neuschwanstein and a short stop for lunch in the castle town of Fussen, there will

be a stop at the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site of the Wieskirche and also another at Ettal

Monastery. Naturally, there will be time for refreshments at a monastery known for its brewing skills!

Do not forget to bring along a passport (short crossing into Austria) some money for lunch and the occa-

sional souvenirs as well.

Weekend in Prague Friday, March 2 – Sunday, March 4 Cost: $270 Prague is often on the top of everyone’s list of places to visit in the old world.

We will leave at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, March 2. Friday evening there will be

an orientation tour of Prague including how to get back to the hotel if your

experience of the city is going to include any of the very late nightspots! Sat-

urday starts with a daytime tour that includes a few more touristic sights to

include a tour of the Franz Kafka museum. For those who want to see an op-

era tickets can be arranged. There will be a fair amount of free time to ex-

plore on your own. On the way home, we will stop in Pilzen to sample some

arrival time back in Garmisch is about 8:00 p.m. Do not forget that you need

your passport!

Munich in the Third Reich Tour Friday, March 11 – video at 7 p.m.; Sunday, March 13 – 8 a.m. trip to Munich Cost: $35

One of the most popular tours is Munich in the Third Reich - a walking tour

developed quite a few years ago to coincide with an exhibition that the Mu-

nich Stadtmuseum was presenting. We start with a video presentation and a

geographical and historical orientation in the PLTCE Auditorium (Bldg. 253)

on Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, we meet at the Garmisch Train Station just

before 8 a.m. and take the 8:04 a.m. train to Munich. There we recreate the Bier Hall Putsch exactly as it happened

in 1923. After lunch, we visit the site of the Munich Accords (where Czechoslovakia ceased to be an independent

unified country) and see some other places associated with the Nazi movement. This is an extremely interesting tour,

somewhat like touring an urban battlefield. We cannot pretend that there is not a lot of walking, or that this is a short

day. Most participants are somewhat exhausted after we storm-troop our way from one end of Munich to another.

However, we have not had anybody say to shorten it in any way!

Ballets, Concerts, and Operas in Munich Cost: $12 for transportation only One of the best things about living in the countryside around Garmisch-Partenkirchen is that our beautiful village is

located so close to Munich, the Bavarian capital city with all the cultural opportunities that anyone could ask for. If

you are interested in acquiring season tickets for any of these events, please contact us at DSN 440-3370 or Civ.

A New Way to Save

For many, tax time is a great time to save. Federal and state refunds provide a convenient lump sum of

money, unavailable at other times of the year. Now there is an easy way to use that refund as a start to a

great savings program. With as little as $50, any taxpayer who receives a federal tax refund can choose to

automatically receive a portion of that refund as one or more U.S. Savings Bonds, simply by checking the ap-

propriate box and designating an amount and a recipient. Savers may choose to commit all or part of their

federal refund to the purchase of savings bonds. Refunds can also be deposited directly into a savings ac-

count, making this one of the easiest and safest savings opportunities available.

How to Save with Savings Bonds at Tax Time

With this new opportunity, saving is made easy with your federal tax form. When filling out your taxes, be

sure to look at Form 8888 and check off the appropriate box to purchase savings bonds. Or, ask the tax as-

sistant. Saving a portion of your refund into a U.S. Savings Bond is an easy option. You may choose to save

for yourself or gift a savings bond to someone else, perhaps your children, grandchildren, or another special

person in your life. Go to http://www.choosetosave.org/ for more information.
