Early Life

Born January 14, 1928 Grew up in Bronx, New York Studied painting at the city college of New York and

photography at Columbia University

1955: two of his photos appeared in The Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (New York)

1959: first one-man show at Image Gallery in New York City

1964: first Guggenheim Fellowship Award 1969: second Guggenheim Fellowship 1979: third Guggenheim Fellowship

Later Life

1952-1954: worked as a commercial photographer at the Pix Photo Agency (Manhattan); 1954: Brackman Associates

1971-1972: Taught photography at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago

1973-1978: Taught at the University of Texas

Later Life

Published four books of photographs Women are Beautiful (1975) a random collection of

women caught on the street Used a small-format 35mm camera that enabled him

to photograph freely and quickly When he died in 1984 he left more than 2,500 rolls of

undeveloped film and over 300,000 undeveloped images

Garry Winogrand

Garry Winogrand appealed to me because the majority of his photographs were candid, natural photos

Winogrand continues to appeal to audiences because he succeeds in capturing everyday American life during the 1960s

Winogrand’s work might be used in contemporary media to show what everyday life was like in the mid 1900s
