Most of the harmonica players I meet are men in their gray hair era and have a tendency to be a bit of a handful. I’m one of those guys. Yet, harmonica is for everybody. Here’s some things it’ll probably do for you: o Make you musical and artistic and fun. If you also read
a book once in a while, you’ll end up being delightful. o It’ll strengthen your breathing apparatus and with the
Earth descending into polluted anarchy, you might be a bit stronger than the guy next to you as you run from the zombies. It means the horror will last a bit longer for you and that’s really what we’re after, right?
o Help your memory and your tin ear. Huh? What? o Give you something to do at stoplights. You can rawk
out. Your journeys will become more pleasant. Honking your horn will mean something completely different to you. And suddenly all the politicians will start voting the way you think they should, people will start listening to your opinions, and you’ll actually get better looking.

Stuff You Need to Know
I know you’re going to skip this section and go straight to the songs you hope to play. That’s a mistake, but you are who you are. If you are reading this, you’ve probably already wandered around through the rest of the book. Welcome back. Now read this stuff, it’s helpful. Copyright Notice If you’re not a creator, you might be under the notion all the stuff on the internet is free for you to use. It’s not. You need to be careful how you use stuff, or you might have a lawyer bugging you. Here’s what you can do with this book. All of the songs here are public domain in the United States so you don’t owe anything to the original composer. However, I hold the copyright to the arrangements, so you need to check with me at [email protected] if you want to use this book for anything other than your personal education. Please don’t share or copy or redistribute this document in any way. If you know somebody who could benefit from this book, have them come to my website and get their own copy. I also have a Big Book of non-public domain songs on the way. Guitar Stuff I’ve provided guitar chords and a tablature. If you are a guitar player, you’ll be fine strumming those chords, and yeah, I know the F chord is everywhere. Conquer it. You should consider using arpeggio playing technique too. If you read tabs, pluck, strum or roll the chords as you see fit. If you don’t read tablature, you should learn. It’ll make your harmonica playing sound ridiculously cool. If you want standard notation (with no tablature) because you’re just that good, drop me an email and I’ll let you know if we can work that out. Software makes life easy, feeling my time on Earth slipping away makes life more difficult. Lyrics I’m not spending a lot of time trying to be the ultimate music historian and searching out the best or “most accurate” lyrics. I’m getting them close and I’m moving onto the next song. I occasionally need to adjust lyrics to make the music easier to read or play or to save pages. If you have a different version in your head, do it your way.
Modes You don’t really need to know these, but if you are composing on harmonica and want to sound extra weird, or if you’re improvising and need to remember where the heck you are, here are the Grecian Modes over C: • C = Ionian/Major CDEFGABC • D = Dorian DEFGABCD • E = Phrygian EFGABCDE • F = Lydian FGABCDEF • G - Myxolydian GABCDEFG • A = Aoelian/minor ABCDEFGA • B = Locrian BCDEDFAB Sound Files Sound files useful as backing tracks in MP3 format are available at https://mammothgardens.com on the harmonica tab and are generated by the sheet music itself. I wouldn’t play anything in this book before listening to those. In folk music, the way you learned it may be different than what is on the paper. Ukulele Stuff If you know how to strum the ukulele, I’ve provided the chord shapes. If you know how to read tablature, I’ve provided that too. Often a song in C doesn’t fit well onto the ukulele, and so sometimes it goes way too high or way too low. To deal with that, occasionally I use “Low G” ukulele tuning, but most of the time you can use a High G ukulele.

Video Files Videos are posted at https://mammothgardens.com on the harmonica tab. I don’t lay claim to being a great harmonica player, nor a videographer, nor any type of person you’d want to look at, but I hope the recordings will be helpful to you. Harmonica Stuff Care and Maintenance for All Harmonicas If something seems broken, fix it. You can inhale broken reeds. You can cut your lip or tongue on the metal. Make sure to keep your harmonica warm, otherwise moisture condensation can build up and cause jams and rust and all manner of grossness. Clean your harmonica regularly with the manufacturer’s recommended cleaners. Ethanol or vinegar will work too, but vinegar tastes way better than cleaning alcohol. You’ll need to disassemble and be able to reassemble your harmonica and have the proper tools. Don’t bend anything during this process or you may be out a harmonica. Preparing to Play This is kind of a gross activity, so do it right, or you’ll have a harmonica full of your lunch and you’ll have to clean all that macaroni and cheese out of your harmonica sooner. • Wash your hands. • Brush your teeth. • Drink plenty of water -- and nothing else. • Sit up tall and pretty. • Breath from your belly not your neck. • Tap your tongue before each note and “tooo.” • Don’t blow or draw too hard. Less is more. • Pucker up. You’ll need to use you kissing muscles. • Cup the harmonica with both hands. • Move your hands, not your face. • When printing individual songs for use in a binder, print
single-sided and punch the first page on the right-hand side so it lays flat face-to-face with the second page.
• Don’t print out everything. You’ll eventually have everything memorized or be able to play by ear anyway, so leave stuff in digital form if you can.
Harmonica Embouchure Focus on getting one note out at a time. Purse your lips, but still press the harmonica into your mouth. It should be “in” your lips, not “against” your lips. Using your kissing muscles to help direct the airflow more than just your lips. The more you play the further into your mouth you’ll be able to keep the harmonica and a better tone will result. It will take some time for your mouth muscles to understand their new role.

If you read the harmonica tablature (which is the last lyric line) and don’t play with other instruments, you can use my sheet music with any harmonica in any key. First Songs to Try on Harmonica: • The C Major Scale 4 • Kumbaya 4 • Ode to Joy 5 • Simple Gifts 6 • When the Saints Go Marching In 4 • You are My Sunshine 3 Bending Notes It is fun to try changing the timbre of the notes by bending them and it can allow you to reach notes otherwise unavailable on your harmonica. You can bend notes by adding muscle pressure, it feels like you’re kissing the harmonica, to draw the lower reeds (holes one through 4) down, and eventually you can do the same thing on the upper reeds when blowing. Chromatic Harmonica in C Here’s the hole layout for the 12-hole chromatic harmonica I use to create this sheet music. If you are just starting out in harmonica, you should master the diatonic stuff first. It’s quite a bit more work to play a chromatic harmonica. The 16-hole harmonica has another octave on the low end, and the 10-hole is missing the upper notes. Key Out
