Ongoing events and travel news of note: Now Open: Beyond the Drawing Board FLW and Monona Terrace Exhibit Madison It took sixty years for Madison to decide to build the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace Convention Center. Wright and his staff spent more than 63,000 hours over 21 years on the project and Wrights compensation was $250. You might say it was a good buy. Wrights time spent on the Monona Terrace was a testament to his passion for this area and his desire to bridge Lake Monona with downtown. Now Beyond the Drawing Board, the new multimedia gallery at Monona Terrace tells the controversial story of Madisons long awaited dream civic center and the passion of Americas greatest architect. The gallery includes photos, videos, audio clips and artifacts, is free and open to the public on level 3 West, below the Gift Shop. The gallery is open daily during building hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. www.mononaterrace.com PH: 608-261-4000 Now Open: Fond du Lac - Outboard Motor History at New Mercury Marine Museum Mercury Marine is a legend in the outboard motor industry and the manufacturing facility in Fond du Lac has a long proud history. Today it employs more than 3000 workers. The company story is now told in a new museum that opened in April 2014. It is located within the Fond du Lac Childrens Museum, 75 W. Scott Street. Inside you can trace the beginnings of Mercury Marine, learn about the secret testing facility in Florida, see dozens of motors and even the companys venture into the snowmobile business. Admission is $1 per person or $5 for a family. This 15-story structure was completed in 1950 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was last used in 1982 and now has enjoyed extensive interior and exterior restoration work. Visitors will see four main exhibit areas on two floors of the Research Tower, including a full mock-up of a 1950s laboratory.
