CTR Columns
CTR Columns — For Gas Analysis• CTR Columns Permit the Simultaneous Use of Two Different
Packings for Your Analysis
• CRT I is Ideal for Separating O2, N2, CH4, CO, CO2 at AmbientConditions
• CRT III is Ideal for Argon Analysis in the Presence of O2
• Useful Where Two Separate Chromatographic Runs are Requiredto Analyze One Sample
• Individually Tested
“CTR” is Alltech’s designation for a series of concentric columnswhich offer many advantages for certain types of difficultanalyses. A CTR column is essentially a column within a column. This permits you to use two different packings for the analysis ofyour sample. The diagram below shows the construction of theCTR column.
Cut-Away View of CTR Column

CTR I - Oxygen, Nitrogen, Methane, CarbonMonoxide and Carbon Dioxide
Until the CTR, no single column operating at room temperaturehas been designed to permit, in one analysis, the separation ofoxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.Usually this analysis is accomplished by either making twoseparate runs on the sample of interest or employing a switchingvalve and polarity change during the analysis. The reason for thisdifficulty is that carbon dioxide is irreversibly absorbed on themolecular sieve which must be used to obtain the oxygen/nitrogen split. In addition, porous polymers and silica gel, whichare widely used to separate carbon dioxide from otherconstituents, do not separate carbon monoxide from thecomposite air peak at room temperature.
With Alltech’s CTR columns, this type of analysis can beroutinely handled in a one-step operation. The developmentpermits you to analyze oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbonmonoxide and carbon dioxide under isothermal conditions, atroom temperature, and in less than 10 minutes. A quick method!
Calibration Gas for CTR I Column – This special mixture isuseful for calibrating Part No. 8700 CTR I columns. It containsapproximately 15% CO2 + 7% CO + 7% O2 + 4.5% CH4 with thebalance N2. It is supplied in a 4L push button can with a needleapplicator.

Chromosorb® T
Chromosorb® T is a support materialmade from Teflon® 6. It provides a highlyinert surface and is useful for theanalysis of polar compounds such aswater, hydrazine, sulfur dioxide, etc.Temperature affects the physicalproperties of Chromosorb® T.It melts at 327°C, starts to decompose at290°C, and fuses together underprolonged use at 250°C. The free falldensity is 0.42g/cc. The surface area is 7-8m2/g and maximumloading capacity is 12%. When packing, we recommend chillingthe material to below 19°C. This helps make the material harderand reduces static electricity which interferes with the successfulpacking of the column.
T-Port-F
T-Port-F is a screened tetrafluoroethylenesupport useful for analysis of very polarcompounds. It has a density of about0.5g/cc with a maximum temperature limit of150°C.

Silica Gel
Silica Gel is commonly used for the analysis offixed gases and light hydrocarbons. It is alsouseful for dehydration of gases and liquids.Silica Gel also strongly adsorbs hydrogen-bonding compounds.
Grade 42 Indicating Silica Gel changesfrom blue to pink as it becomes saturatedwith water. It conforms to MIL-D-3716 Type IVGrade H. It will adsorb water up to about 40% by weight. Themaximum temperature limit is 350°C.
Activated Alumina
Activated alumina is useful for the analysis oflight hydrocarbons. Unsaturated hydrocarbonsare retained longer than saturated ones. Theydry and “sweeten” liquid or gas streams. GradeF-6 is an indicating alumina which turns fromblue to pink upon adsorption of water. Themaximum temperature limit is 300°C.
Chemipack® C18
Chemipack® C18 is a chemically bonded GCpacking. Because it is bonded, it has highthermal stability, zero bleed and stabilityto water. These properties make it idealfor GC/MS or high sensitivity GC with anydetector. Chemipack® C18 is made bysilicon-bonding technology, not esterbonding. The monolayer produced yields ahighly efficient packing. The functional group bonded to the silicais octadecyl.

Carbosphere™ Carbon Molecular Sieve
Carbosphere™ exhibits properties similar tomolecular sieves due to small pore sizes in theangstrom range. It has a surface area of about1000m2/g with a pore size of about 13Å.Carbosphere™ separates oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the samerun. It also separates air, carbon dioxide and theC1-C2 hydrocarbons. At ambient temperatures, hydrogen will elute before oxygen.
Carbosphere™ resolves trace amounts ofmethane and acetylene in ethylene and even traceamounts of methane, acetylene and ethylene in ethane. Thecarbon molecular sieves also separate oxides of nitrogen andsulfur. Because Carbosphere™ is very nonretentive for water, rapidseparations of organics, such as formaldehyde and methanol inwater are possible.
Being a fairly hard dense bead, Carbosphere™ lacks electricityand packs easily into columns. Carbosphere™ can be affected bycontaminants in the air and in carrier gases and is best storedunder nitrogen or argon.
It is important to remove every trace of oxygen from thecarrier gas used on Carbosphere™ columns. This is essential if youare doing trace analysis or using temperatures above 200°C.Alltech’s Oxy-Trap™ and Indicating Oxy-Trap™ are ideal for removalof oxygen from carrier gas.

Molecular Sieves
Molecular Sieves• For Drying Applications
Molecular sieves are synthetic alkali metal alumino-silicates with various cations. They are primarilyused for the separation of fixed gases and drying ofliquid or gas streams. Molecules are adsorbedprimarily because their molecular diameter matches the porediameter of the molecular sieve. They can be reactivated by heatingat 250°C for 12 hours; 300°C for 4 hours; or 350°C for 2 hours.

Washed Molecular Sieves• For Chromatography Applications
The usual gas chromatographic grades of molecularsieves have a fine dust adhering to each particlewhich cannot be removed simply by carefulsieving. This dust is responsible for poorerseparations and higher pressure drops thanmolecular sieves which are essentially dust-free.
The washed molecular sieves offered here have been carefullycleaned of dust particles by washing with distilled water. Thecleaned product is then activated and sealed in glass jars.Molecular Sieves are typically reactivated at a temperature of300°C for four hours.

Carbograph Packings
Carbograph™ Graphitized Carbon Blacks• High Speed Analysis
• Optimum Peak Symmetry
• Wide Range of Applications• Extremely Hydrophobic - Ideal for Aqueous
Injections
• Less Expensive than other Equivalents
Carbograph™ packings are graphitized carbonblacks equivalent to the Carbopackpackings. There are three different typesof graphitized carbon blacks (Carbograph™
packings 1 and 2) that differ in specific surface areas (see below).
Unlike diatomites that must have a stationary phase,Carbograph™ packings possess partitioning properties without anysurface modifications. Carbograph™ packings can also be modifiedwith a stationary phase giving them unique selectivities.
Carbograph™ 1
Equivalent to Carbopack™ B. Obtained by graphitization andgranulation from carbon black similar to Vulcan or Spheron. Ithas a surface area of 100m2/g. Carbograph™ 1-TD has a coarsemesh of 20/40 which is suitable for thermal desorption work.
Carbograph™ 1SC
Similar to Carbopack™ BHT. It is a type of Carbograph™ 1 that ismanufactured specifically for the separation of sulfur compoundsSF6, SO2, H2S, COS, mercaptans, and disulfides. It is also suitablefor analysis of sulfurs in oil products.
Carbograph™ 2
Equivalent to Carbopack™ C. Similar to graphitized carbon blackP 33 or Sterling FT. It has a specific surface of 10m2/g. It can beused alone as an uncoated adsorbent packing for the separation ofvolatile organic compounds. Carbograph™ 2-TD has a coarse meshof 20/40 which is suitable for thermal desorption work.
Carbograph™ support materials may be coated with anysingle or a combination of liquid phases for specialapplications. Please call our Customer ServiceDepartment to inquire about custom-made packings.

Graphpac™-GC and Graphpac™-GB• Graphitized Carbon
• Inert, Non-Specific Surface
• Unique Separation Properties• Optimized Phase Loading
• Hydrophobic – Ideal for AqueousInjections
Two types of Graphpacs™ are available, Graphpac™-GC andGraphpac™-GB. Graphpac™-GC has an average surface area of10-13m2/g, while Graphpac™-GB has a larger surface area of100-110m2/g. Both types interact with samples almost completelyby non-specific adsorption. There is no ionic charge associatedwith the surfaces of these materials unlike Tenax® or other porouspolymers. This interaction results in unique separations that arenot achievable with fused silica open tubular (FSOT) capillarycolumns. Alcohols, hydrocarbons, and acids are separated in seriesaccording to carbon number.
Stationary phases can be used to modify the selectivity ofthese carbons. These carbons possess partitioning capabilities asuncoated packings, however when a stationary phase is employedspecific selectivities can be obtained. The uncoated and coatedpackings are listed below. See the packed column applications formore example chromatograms. If you are ordering a packedcolumn for an on-column injection please specify so wecan leave 3inches unpacked in the injection arm of the column.
Graphtrap-GB
This coarse mesh of Graphpac™-GB (20/40 mesh) is useful fortrapping volatile compounds bexcause it has little retention forwater, which minimizes interference during desorption. It can beused with thermal or solvent desorption processes.

gc gcTenax® Porous Polymers
Tenax®-TA (GC) • Stable Baseline After Conditioning
• Short Retention Times
• Low Affinity for Water
• Maximum Temperature Limit is 350°C
Tenax®-TA is a porous polymer that is based on2,6-Diphenyl-p-phenylene Oxide. Tenax®-TA isa low bleeding material with a very lowlevel of impurities and has replacedTenax®-GC. Tenax®-TA can be used as both acolumn packing material and as a trapping adsorbent for organicvolatile and semi-volatile compounds. Both the EPA and NIOSHspecify the use of Tenax® in their standard methods. Tenax® isparticularly useful for the analysis of high boiling compounds suchas alcohols, polyethylene glycols, diols, phenols, monoamines anddiamines, ethanolamines, aldehydes, ketones and chlorinatedaromatics. We designed a fibrillar material from Tenax® as ahydrophobic disk for SPE of organics in drinking and waste water.
Conditioning
We highly recommend that Tenax®, like all other porouspolymers, be preconditioned before being packed into GCcolumns. This removes most of the shrinkage of the polymer andminimizes the need for further conditioning. Tenax® can beexpected to shrink further in use.

Tenax®-GR• Contains 23% Graphitized Carbon
• Superior Properties as Trapping Material
• More Symmetrical Peaks as GC Packing
• Maximum Temperature Limit is 350°C
Tenax®-GR contains 23% graphitized carbon asan integral part of the material. This is notan admixture; the graphitized carbon isco-precipitated with the Tenax® polymer. The resulting material gives higherbreak-through volumes for most materials, yet is less water retentive than Tenax®-TA. This makes it an idealmaterial for the preparation of adsorbent traps. When using thismaterial for packing GC columns, better peak symmetry isobserved. Surface area is 24.1m2/g.
The following table gives the breakthrough volumes for severallow molecular weight compounds both on Tenax®-TA and onTenax®-GR. Because the density of the Tenax®-GR is higher thanTenax®-TA, the data is presented as mL/g of Tenax®-GR and asmL/mL of Tenax®-GR. The bulk density for Tenax®-GR is about0.55g/mL while it is about 0.20g/mL for Tenax®-TA.

HayeSep® Polymers
HayeSep® Porous Polymers• Pre-Purified Porous Polymers for GC
• Less Bleed and Shrinkage than Other PorousPolymers
• Conditioned
HayeSep® manufactures polymers withguaranteed consistent batch to batchperformance, no shrinkage and minimumbleed. These polymers are thoroughlycleaned and conditioned to 200oC (165oCfor N and T) under oxygen-free nitrogen before packaging.
Several HayeSep® polymers were developed to solve specificseparation problems. These include the room temperatureseparation of N2, O2, Ar and CO with HayeSep® A; ppm H2O in thepresence of HCl, Cl2 etc. with HayeSep® R; and many others. TheHayeSep® D series better separates the fixed gases to the C2
hydrocarbons. Small differences in pore sizes between themembers of this series can make dramatic differences in theseparations. Table 1 illustrates this.
