Variety and CreativityThere are practically no limits tothe application possibilities for gascylinders combined with yourcreative ideas. Perhaps you are justnow wondering whether a gascylinder might be the better solu-tion for a particular function.

Automobile manufacturers use gascylinders for tailgates and enginehoods. Similar applications can befound in the luggage doors ofcoach busses and the heavy displayboards in sales vehicles in house-hold technology, gas cylindersprovide for the easy opening ofskylights.

Kitchen furniture can be conve-niently adjusted, just as well ashospital beds, operating roomtables and sun tanning beds.

Gas cylinders have long since pro-ven themselves in office technolo-gy. They are to be found in thecovers and service doors of copymachines and in swivel arms forcomputer terminals.

Further applications are to befound in the area of mechanicalengineering. SUSPA gas cylinderssupport the opening and closing of safety- and noise-preventiondevices on turning and millingmachines.

Design and Functional Principles


How Force andDamping ComfortResultGas cylinders are hydropneumaticadjustment elements. They consistof a tube and a piston rod withinternal piston assembly. Fittingson the tube and piston rod make aconnection to your application pos-sible.

The heart of the SUSPA gas cylin-der is the special sealing- andguiding system, which ensures ahermetic sealing of the innerchamber with low friction, evenunder extreme environmentalconditions.

The gas cylinder is filled under highpressure with nitrogen. A fillingpressure results, which in turn actsupon the cross-sectional area ofthe piston rod. The extension forceis generated in this way. When theextension force of the gas cylinderis greater than the force of thecounterweight, the piston rodextends; in the case of less exten-sion force, the piston rod retracts.The cross section of flow in thedamping system determines howfast extension occurs.

Aside from nitrogen, a definedamount of oil for lubrication anddamping in the final position isalso present in the inner chamber.

The damping performance of a gascylinder can be adjusted accordingto need and task by way of a linear,progressive or regressive springcharacteristic.

Reliability as theHighest Measure ofQuality The demands for quality are increa-sing in the automobile industry asin other industrial branches.Certifications in accordance withQS-9000 and DIN EN ISO 9001therefore have long gone withoutsaying at SUSPA.

An effective quality managementteam from purchasing, to manufac-turing, to distribution, all the wayto the final application, ensure theworldwide good reputation and thereliability of SUSPA gas cylinders.

Our new „space-mat®“ principlewith components designed in aero-space engineering makes sure thatoil is always available at the properpoint for the necessary lubrication.In addition, a reservoir out ofextremely resilient, largely non-wearing material is filled at everystroke.

This principle makes the installa-tion of the gas cylinder in anyposition desired possible.

We test our gas cylinders 100 %according to our internal testingspecifications. SUSPA gas cylindersthus have a life expectancy of over50,000 cycles in completely main-tenance-free function. This corre-sponds on the average to 10 yearsof use in the automobile branch inthe operation of luggage compart-ment lids and tailgates, or 20 yearsof use in a skylight.

An Overview of Series 16SUSPA offers you an excellent gascylinder program with the „Series16“, proven on the market for over30 years and always on the newesttechnological stand through con-stant innovation.

Our SUSPA liftline program inclu-des four different basic types: themodels 16-1, 16-2, 16-4 and 16-6. The important differences liein the tube and piston rod diame-ters as well as in the differingextension forces. The advantage isthat we can fulfill your specialtechnical requirements respectivelywith the optimal gas cylindermodel.

SUSPA liftline WithGentle End Damping:The Soft-StopThe SUSPA liftline standard gascylinder, already manufactured bythe millions, is also available withthe convenient „Soft-Stop" system.Unlike the standard version, theSoft-Stop variation possessesposition dependent directing of theextension speed, in other wordsposition dependent damping.

A gentle limit stop is always ensu-red, regardless of the position ofthe gas cylinder. The luggage com-partment lid, for example, thusbegins to open fast, then slowsdown and stops with a gentlecatch. Almost all leading Europeanautomobile manufacturers use thisadvantage.

The SUSPA liftline program can beused without a problem at extremetemperatures. The scale extendsfrom -25 °C to +60 °C.

Corrosion tests in our laboratories(salt spray tests according to DIN50021) ensure fulfillment of yourdemands regarding environmentalinfluences, even beyond 144 hours.

We produce our gas cylinderswithout the use of heavy metals.An environmentally-sound three-component water-lacquer system isused in lacquering the gas cylindertube. We thus make an active con-tribution to an environmentally fri-endly material cycle, which is con-cluded with the nearly completereprocessing of materials.

We thus create ecologically accep-table prerequisites for man andproduct.

Proper DisposalSpecifications as well as safetydata sheets (EWG Nr. 1836/93,SUSPA HOLDING GmbH is certifiedin accordance with DIN ISO 14000), are, of course, available forall components used. These can –in order to protect our know-how –only be studied in our facilities.

SUSPA products contain oil andmay only be disposed of by SUSPAHOLDING GmbH, the raw materialsindustry or a hazardous wastescollection site. Our products mayonly be decompressed under obser-vation of all environmental protec-tion and accident prevention regu-lations by qualified personnel. A drill (approx. 3 mm diameter and10 mm depth) placed at approx. 20 mm from the tube end pointingaway from the piston rod (doubletube possible) is to be carried outwith the piston rod in an extendedposition. Chips, nitrogen and oilmist can be released at high speedduring this process; therefore secu-re the drill point. The oil must bepumped out by way of strokemovements of the piston rod and isthen to be properly disposed of.

All SUSPA employees know thatcustomer satisfaction is created byevery single one of them. We the-refore grant you, when these rulesare observed, 1 year guarantee on material and manufacturing defects beyond the legal period of6 months.

SUSPA gas cylinders fulfill the hig-hest requirements in their funda-mental design and because of theirreliability. The question of suitabi-lity for each individual applicationlies, however, with the user.

We reserve the right to makechanges to the product withoutnotification if they are for furtherprogress.
