Discover Zürich’s time-honored classics in this gourmet’s paradise

Zürich’s restaurant scene is just as diverse as the city itself. Innovative ideas are instantly turned into reality here. The menus offered throughout the city also reflect the trend towards transformation. Creative chefs develop twists on culinary classics and ensure that modern cuisine has a place in traditional Zürich eateries.

A number of guild houses from the trade guilds that governed Zürich from the 14th to the 18th century are restaurants today, and famous for their Zürich specialties prepared in a classic style. Could a plate of «Zürcher Geschnetzeltes» sliced veal taste better anywhere else than in a magnificent guildhall with a long and eventful history behind it?

In Zürich’s former industrial districts, creative culinary experts have made good use of the space in empty factories to imple- ment their innovative ideas. Old and new are blended behind the age-old walls in a remarkable way. Industrial charm meets contemporary design, with cuisine from all over the world sure to please your palate.

1 Zunfthaus zur Waag: enjoy artisan gastronomyThe menu at the Zunfthaus zur Waag reflects the culinary creativity of its kitchen. Here, you will be treated to Zürich specialties such as «Zürcher Geschnetzeltes» (sliced veal in gravy) and other culinary delights 365 days a year. The Biedermeier style dining room affords a grand view of the Münsterhof.Tel. +41 44 216 99 66, Münsterhof 8

The square in front of his restaurant is also the favorite haunt of owner Sepp Wimmer. «Peace and quiet, no hustle and bustle, almost like in old times,» is how he describes early morning in the Münster-hof in Zürich. So it comes as no surprise that it’s Zürich’s quiet areas that Sepp Wimmer invariably recommends to his guests: Lindenhof, Rosenhof, and St. Peter Hofstatt. In his view, authentic Zürich can only be experienced in the Old Town. You have to immerse yourself in the innumerable narrow streets and alleyways and feel the pulse of the city. But Sepp Wimmer also says that guests should not miss a trip on the River Limmat when staying in Zürich. Naturally, visitors to Zürich should try Zürcher Geschnetzeltes. «Best of all in the Restaurant zur Waag», adds Sepp Wimmer with a smile.

3 ZeughauskellerThe Zeughauskeller has certainly earned the title of a «classic Zürich restaurant». The house was built as a gunsmith‘s in 1487. All the weapons which the residents of Zürich acquired during the Burgundy wars had to be stored. The house has retained many of its original features but now features tradi- tional home cooking and authentic dishes instead of weapons.Tel. +41 44 211 26 90, Bahnhofstrasse 28a

4 HiltlIn 1898, Ambrosius Hiltl opened Europe’s first vegetarian restaurant. Taste sensations in an idyllic setting

At the countless outdoor restaurants in Zürich, you will experience a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Garden terraces with breathtaking views of the city and Lake Zürich or restaurants directly on the water invite you to take a seat on warm summer days. The picturesque Old Town is home to numerous eateries with romantic inner courtyards where the spreading, leafy trees make you feel like you are in paradise on balmy summer evenings – in the middle of nature while still in the heart of the city.

6 Fischer’s Fritz: fashionable outdoor eateryThe setting of this magical outdoor eatery will capture your imagination with its fresh fish delicacies and poached trout from Lake Zürich. But the menu also includes crispy chicken and baskets of vegetables to nibble on. All this is combined with unique views of Zürich and the lake. In winter, the garden is converted into a large fondue tent. The restaurant is attached to the camping site of the same name – the only one in the city – and is right by the water.Tel. +41 44 482 16 12, Seestrasse 559

The most important ingredient for the dishes served at Fischer’s Fritz also comes from Lake Zürich. Michel Péclard, who runs the restaurant, employs a pro- fessional fisherman on an exclusive basis. His motto is: «Caught in the morning, on the table by evening.» However, Michel Péclard’s favorite res- taurant is not by the water: Restaurant Wynegg is next to the city’s botanical garden. «Five tables and two originals in terms of cuisine and service» is how he describes the venue. Michel Péclard’s top tip can be found on the other side of the city, where the Bollwerk zur Katz (part of the city ramparts) used to protect the city from intruders: «Right in the center of the city, totally forgotten, absolutely enchanting, somewhat neglected, and not really typical Zürich» – the old botanical garden.

Gastronomy is so diverse in Zürich.» But Laurent Eperon does have a favorite place of which he is particularly fond: «The Botanical Garden – an oasis in the city – so quiet – and perfect for chilling out.» And he recommends guests a visit to the Fraumünster church, «especially the windows by Chagall are a feast for the eyes». But visitors shouldn’t miss a visit to the Lindenhof viewpoint, and «I’m a fan of the Kunsthaus».
