MUSIC This summer, our church music ministry hosted an event that we have not been part of before. The event was a choral festival that was sponsored by the Church Musicians Guild of Wilson. The guild offers a festival event like this every three or four years, and we

have been members of the guild for a long time, but have never felt compelled to give up those extra summer hours to participate. Although hosting was an enormous amount of work, and very stressful at times, we felt very blessed to be able to have the festival here at First Methodist Church. There were over 150 singers from more than 10 churches who joined an ensemble of instrumentalists, bell players and a combined children’s choir to participate in this wonderful afternoon of praise. Mary McDonald, our clinician, was fantastic, and made the day so much fun with her humor and warm personality. The event ended with a concert where the choir and other musicians, along with over 400 guests sang, wor-shipped and rejoiced. It was an incredible event in the life of our music ministry and church. God has done great things, and worked in wonderful ways through our music ministry, and con-tinues to work in and through us to bring about the fulfillment of His will, and to bring glory and honor to His name. We are excited to begin a new year of ministry with you, and ask that you consider allowing God to use you for His honor and praise through the music of the church. Here are some things we will be doing in music ministry this coming year. Please come and join us. Our Chancel Choir will begin on August 29, and will meet every Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. in the choir suite. We will start working on our Christmas program right away, so if you are interested in being part of that, please come and join us. Our handbell choir, the Carillon Ringers, will begin their rehearsals on August 29th in the choir suite. Our rehearsal time is 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday nights. An ability to read music is helpful with this group, but not at all necessary. There are a few spots open in the bell choir, so please let us know if you are interested. The Children’s Choir ministry is such a wonderful part of the ministry of our church. There is nothing that can touch a heart any faster than the voices of children singing about the love of God. The children’s ministry and music ministry will team up this year to offer a wonderful program for children on Sunday evenings at 5:15. This will include dinner, music, ministry/Bible time, games and more. More information with dates and times will be available soon at the information center. Our Praise Band is always looking for new members with a heart to praise and worship God, and talent in singing or playing an instrument. If you are interested in ministry at the 9:00 worship ser-vice through music, please talk with Joel Gay after the service or call the church office during the week. We would love to have you join us. We also have a great solo ministry here at First Methodist that ministers to those in our congre-gation at the various worship services each week. If you would like to minister through singing as a soloist, please let us know. We would love to work with you. Thank you so much for your support of all of the ministries at First Methodist. We are looking forward to a great year as we serve and worship our Savior and Lord.

God bless, Joel Gay

Sending Forth FOREVER REIGN Praise Band

Sending Forth

Greeters for August 26: Hope and Buck Newton

We thank the Praise Band for their ministry this morning.

From Pastor Bob When our boys were little, they were all about ThunderCats. The ThunderCats were cartoon heroes who were part cat and part human and committed to defeating Mumra, the prince of darkness and evil. Individually, Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, and the mighty Lion-O were strong and smart and brave. They could defeat most villains, but when they came up against the full fury of their mighti-est foe, Mumra, they could win only when they combined their strengths. You knew they would prevail when Lion-O lifted the Sword of Omens and shouted – “Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats, Ho!” That was back in the mid 1980’s and today the ThunderCats don’t have the same attraction. New heroes now fight to protect all that is good. Children, especially boys, are drawn to the ongoing battles between good and evil. It’s fun to escape into the make-believe world where fictional heroes fight against enormous odds and always win. But real life isn’t like that. Sometimes it seems that evil has the upper hand and keeps winning and winning and winning. What are we to do? In today’s reading from Ephesians 6:10-20, Paul says that, for Christians, there is only one really Important battle and that is not a battle between people. It is a battle against powers we cannot see, but which do serious damage to individuals, families, and communities. Though Paul does not name those powers, we know their names: Selfishness, Greed, Cruelty, and Hate. These are the unseen powers we must fight. Paul says that, in order to be victorious in the battle against evil, the Christian must “Put on the whole armor of God.” In order to stand firm, Paul says, “…fasten the belt of truth around your waist and put on the breastplate of righteousness. On your feet put the shoes of gospel of peace. Take up the shield of faith, put the helmet of salvation on your head and take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, in your hand.” Remember, that the fight against the unseen powers of darkness and evil come, we are stronger together than individually. Paul’s battle cry is, “Be strong! Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of Christ’s power!”

me close, songs in the night it giveth. I hear the real, though far off hymn, that hails a new creation. It sounds an echo in my soul above earth’s lamentation. My life flows on in endless song, how can I keep from singing? No storm can shake my inmost calm, how can I keep from singing? Oh, to the Rock! To the Rock, I’m clinging. Oh, to the Rock! How can I stop singing? Oh, to the Rock! I’m clinging to the Rock now. Oh, to the Rock! Hear me singing! My life flows on in endless song, how can I keep from singing? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
