The Great Gatsby: Color Journal Assignment English 11 Ms. Regales OBJECTIVES: To examine the use of imagery in the novel, to track character development, to examine the use of connotation as a literary and figurative device, to strengthen close reading skills DESCRIPTION: Throughout our reading of The Great Gatsby, you will be tracking Fitzgerald’s use of color in imagery, character development, and connotations. We will refer to the journals during class discussions, they will be collected for a grade once we have completed our reading, and you will have the option of writing the in-class essay on this topic. I have provided a sample template on my website for you to use as an aid, as well as a sample page from a color journal as a model. This journal should be a Word document, with a cover page, with a suitable illustration image, and table of contents. This journal should also include the annotated poem, “Colors Passing Through Us,” by Marge Piercy, from our in-class work, and the paragraph you wrote in class based on our discussion of the novel’s cover. These pieces should come before your tracking of colors in the novel. At the end of each chapter, you should write a brief paragraph on the use of color in this chapter. In your color journal, you will choose what you think are your best three paragraphs for me to grade. These paragraphs should follow your actual journal pages. In sum, your journals should include the following SIX pieces in this order: cover page with illustration, table of contents, annotated poem, prediction paragraph, journal pages, best three paragraphs.
