The production of process and potable water• Conventional potable water supply

Clarification and chlorination are used around the world to produce drinking water

that is both clean and abundant. Veolia installs world-class clarification systems that

settle suspended solids and, using chlorination, reduce the spread of waterborne

pathogens. This technology has been established as a leading resource to address

basic human water needs.

• Technologically-advanced potable water supplyVeolia designs treatment systems that meet the highest drinking water

standards with Veolia Water-developed technologies: Reverse osmosis and

ultrafiltration use high water pressure and selective membranes to filter

particles and ions of various sizes; the patented Actiflo® and Multiflo® are

advanced settlers and clarifiers that efficiently remove total suspended

solids (TSS), colour, algae and heavy metal co-precipitates for high quality

drinking water production; and ultraviolet (UV) treatments help to ensure

that treated water is also sanitised.

Desalination of seawater and brackish waterVeolia has vast experience in the design, construction and commissioning

of various types of water desalination plants. Desalination is an effective

treatment for obtaining potable or process water from sea or brackish water

to reduce project costs and to lessen the stresses placed on municipal water

sources.

Utilising global expertise and energy-efficient technologies such as reverse osmosis, clarifiers, filtration, UV treatment and chlorination, Veolia employs

either membrane technology, or the thermal process to desalinate seawater to the highest possible standards.

Wastewater treatmentMembrane bio-reactor (MBR) wastewater treatment

Biosep™ technology (membrane systems coupled with the use of a bio-reactor) produces water of sufficient quality to be discharged into surface water systems, or

to produce process or potable water.

Technical capabilities

Page 6: Gauteng BOTSWANA Head Office Unit 5, Plot ... - Veolia Water · company, Veolia Water Solutions and Technologies South Africa (Veolia) offers a full range of services, from turnkey

This technology is easily retrofitted to older membrane systems and features

low environmental footprints.

Veolia uses aerobic biological treatment with activated sludge and

immersed membrane filtration to achieve water of high standards. Biosep™

technology significantly reduces carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants, and

drastically reduces water’s bacteria count.

Moving bed bio-reactors (MBBR) wastewater treatment

MBBR technology, pioneered by the Veolia Water sister company AnoxKaldnes,

produces a consistently high-grade water quality with activated micro-organisms

that are particularly resistant to changes in process conditions.

Biofilms, cultured onto suspended carriers of various shapes, sizes and

patterns (for maximum surface area), are agitated with constant aeration

– stimulating the continuous breakdown of organic matter. This technology

makes it possible to handle extremely high loading conditions without the

possibility of clogging, as well as treat municipal and industrial wastewater

with a relatively low footprint.

Existing plants can be easily upgraded to house MBBR technology by

integrating the biofilm carrier elements, an engineered aeration system,

and carrier element retention screens. The versatile technology can also be

used in wastewater pre-treatment, post-treatment, and in activated sludge

processing. MBBR technology further features the ability to cultivate specific

cultures for specific purposes in various process stages.

Nitrogen and phosphorous removal with activated sludge

The Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies-developed Azenit™ nitrogen and

phosphorous removal system is easily incorporated into wastewater treatment

systems as either a direct treatment of raw water, or downstream of a primary settling

stage. This system also removes suspended solids, BOD (biochemical oxygen demand)

and COD (chemical oxygen demand).

Technical capabilities

Trickling filter technology for wastewater treatment and re-use

Veolia offers an affordable and environmentally-friendly solution for advanced treatment

of domestic wastewater in association with its Namibian sister company, Aqua Services &

Engineering (ASE), that uses trickling filter, fixed film, and biological treatment processes.

This system is a self-contained modular-type water treatment plant for smaller near-potable

water demands.

The trickling filter system screens and removes non-degradable particles from raw

sewage. An anaerobic digestion process further prepares effluent for a fixed-film trickling

filter, where organic constituents are removed and nitrification and final water polishing

occurs. Final solid separation, chlorination and disinfection leave water ready for use in

various processes.

Water re-use: Wastewater recovery for process re-use and potable re-useWater from both industrial and municipal waste streams can be treated, recovered,

and re-used as process or potable water. Veolia designs, builds and commissions water

treatment facilities that limit our client’s reliance on municipal water sources or the need

to discharge large effluent quantities by supplying reclaimed water, saving both money

and reducing environmental impact.

Reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, Actiflo® and Multiflo® clarifiers, ultrafiltration, UV

treatment, chlorination and disc filters are typically used in these efficiency-driven

and cost-optimised systems. Disc filters, from Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies’

subsidiary, Hydrotech, are mechanical and self-cleaning water filters designed for

systems where it is essential to prevent particles from fragmentation.

Sludge treatment: Incineration

Veolia reduces sludge volumes with its patented Pyrofluid™ incineration process, turning

organic matter contained within sewage sludge into oxidised ash to be recycled in various

ways.

Composting and pelletisation

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has enhanced the efficiency of greenhouse solar

sludge drying by coupling two well-known processes: air drying and aerobic fermentation

using Solia™ technology. This process leaves sludge dry and suitable for use as compost

(pelletised and as sprinkle).

Energy generation and co-generation

Innovative technology from Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has turned wastewater

into a valuable energy resource. Biogas, heat and energy can now be recovered from

sludge in a cleaner, greener recycling process.

Exelys™, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies’ enhanced sludge digestion process,

breaks down long chain molecules typical of sludge to release large quantities of biogas

for energy generation – while reducing overall sludge quantities.

Energy generation from biosolids enables wastewater treatment works to become

independent of grid supply, and even supply surplus clean power into the grid.

Potable water productionVeolia Water Solutions & Technologies South Africa (Veolia) has already made a significant contribution to the local infrastructure where basic access to water is not

only enshrined in the constitution, but necessary for continuous onward growth and improvement. The company has engineered and implemented conventional and technologically-advanced systems, including desalination, for large and small scale potable water production, while helping to maintain sustainable resource management.

The company supplies a full spectrum of services from building new turnkey plants, to refurbishing and upgrading existing plants, whether large-scale municipal projects or containerised plug-and-play units.

Project Success Mossel Bay Municipality, Western CapeVeolia supplied a turnkey seawater desalination plant to produce ten megalitres of potable water per day.

RequirementsThe Municipality required urgent relief to an on-going water shortage in the region and required the one-year construction period to be fast tracked. This was the first time a desalination plant of this size was constructed in South Africa.

SolutionSupplied directly by an open intake (about 600m out to sea), 15 megalitres of sea water is pumped into a holding tank via drum screens, which screen incoming water to 500 microns, or 0.5mm, to get rid of kelp, sea shells and other

impurities. Water then passes through six filters and reverse osmosis units for purification. Five megalitres of this water is supplied to PetroSA for process water,

while the remaining 10 megalitres is destined for human consumption after further chemical treatment that kills any bacteria and stabilises the pH balance.

Bitou Municipality (Plettenberg Bay), Western CapeVeolia supplied a turnkey seawater desalination plant to produce two megalitres of

potable water per day.

Municipal applications

Page 10: Gauteng BOTSWANA Head Office Unit 5, Plot ... - Veolia Water · company, Veolia Water Solutions and Technologies South Africa (Veolia) offers a full range of services, from turnkey

RequirementsWith limited coastline space and environmental as well as aesthetic concerns in mind,

the Municipality required Veolia to design and build the plant within a tight deadline.

SolutionSea water is sourced from seven boreholes at a depth of 12m each, sunk close to

the landmark Beacon Isle Hotel where the beach sand acts as first phase filter.

The water is then pumped and treated by sea water reverse osmosis membranes.

Brine water is discharged into the sea where wave action disperses and minimises

excessive salinity. The plant’s building is also covered in indigenous succulents,

minimising noise and improving the plant’s aesthetics.

Key technologiesSand filtration • Reverse osmosis

Knysna Municipality, Western Cape

Veolia supplied a turnkey sea water desalination plant to produce

two megalitres of potable water per day.

RequirementsGrowing water and energy shortages in the Garden Route region dictated

that Veolia designs a highly efficient and effective potable water production

plant.

SolutionThe plant is centred on reverse osmosis skids with energy recovery turbines

that drastically reduce the plant’s reliance on an external energy source. Raw

water is abstracted from near the lagoon and, since it is constructed next to

the Knysna Wastewater Treatment Works, the plant discharges its brine into the

sewage works, which has low salinity. The generated potable water is pumped

into Knysna’s reticulation system with energy-efficient pumps.

Wastewater treatment

Veolia answers to a demand for better wastewater management through the local

integration of world-class technologies from within the global Veolia Water Solutions

& Technologies Group. Whether large or small scale plants, the company designs,

builds, commissions and operates wastewater treatment facilities to recoup

maximum value from wastewater, reduce its impact on the environment, and

optimise the distribution of usable water to those who need it most.

Project Success Durban, eThekwini Water Services (EWS), KwaZulu-Natal

This Veolia flagship plant treats industrial and municipal wastewater to near

potable standards for re-use in industrial processes by high-volume industrial

customers, such as Mondi Paper and SAPREF.

Requirements

The plant needed to free up potable water for municipal use in peri-urban

communities by reclaiming process water at a rate of 47,5Ml/day. This plant

also significantly reduces the amount of municipal wastewater discharged

into the environment.

Solution

Veolia performs initial screening, degritting and primary settling of raw

municipal wastewater. The effluent from the primary settling tanks, termed

feed water, is fed into an activated sludge plant. Feed water then undergoes

lamella settling in the first of three stages of the Multiflo® treatment process.

To coagulate solids in the feed water, a metal salt is dosed before polymers are

added to enhance flocculation.

After clarification and as the water leaves this area, it is dosed with polyaluminium

chloride to remove residual iron and enhance the filtration process. The dosed

water is sent to the dual media filtration stage where ozonising occurs to break

down remaining non-biodegradable organic compounds. The water is then polished

using activated carbon filters, chlorinated, and transported to a storage tank for

distribution to industrial customers.

City of Cape Town, Bellville Wastewater Treatment Works, Western Cape

This project involved the upgrade of the Bellville Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) to treat an additional 20Ml/day of high-grade effluent water, bringing

the plant’s total capacity to 70Ml/day.

Requirements

Veolia designed, constructed and commissioned the largest membrane bio-reactor (MBR) in the country to date – without disrupting the throughput of

the existing plant.

Solution

Veolia supplied a new inlet works for the MBR plant, new biological reactors and six membrane trains, including all mechanical and electrical works. A new sludge dewatering facility was also supplied, including an upgrade of the

existing electrical and control systems infrastructure.

Raw municipal wastewater passes through coarse screens for degritting, before passing through fine screens and undergoing anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic treatment. Ultrafiltration and dewatering of sludge make up the final processes.

Key technologiesMembrane bio-reactor • Ultrafiltration • Sludge management

Mossel Bay Municipality, Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW)

Veolia was contracted to design, build and commission a municipal wastewater treatment plant to upgrade and re-use treated effluent. Reclaimed, near potable water is sold to the municipality’s industrial clients,

such as PetroSA.

Requirements

To meet the region’s short-term water needs, the plant was constructed to deliver 5Ml/day of high grade process water to the Wolwedans Dam – which supplies PetroSA. The plant’s design needed to accommodate for a future

expansion to produce 15Ml/day.

Solution

Veolia provided the mechanical and electrical works associated with the re-use plant. Membrane separation by way of reverse osmosis, micro-screening, ultrafiltration and desalination by reverse osmosis make up the range of trusted

key technologies used at this plant.
