Pat Pitselfrom your President

Pat Pitsel

Is there anything more noteworthy in March than St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th? Well, if you’re Irish, then the second most important day in March is the following day, March 18, date for Confederation Park Annual General Meeting. And following are the 10 most important reasons why you need to attend.

10. Because March is a very boring month, so you need something exciting to spice it up.

9. Because you’ll be able to vote on a by-law change, and this will be the most exciting thing my heart can handle.

8. Because you will be able to find out what your membership fees have paid for, and why the Presi-dent did not get an all-expense paid trip to Edmon-ton to recruit new members.

7. Because you will be able to ask questions of our auditor, unless they concern marital status, race, religion, ethnicity, age or political persuasion.

6. Because you may have your photograph pub-lished in the Gazette.

5. Because you could find yourself sitting beside your new bff, or even be introduced to a potential life partner. There is a high likelihood of this hap-pening since we have a truly quality membership.

4. Because you have the opportunity to choose the new Board of Directors, and there will even be choices and a ballot!

3. Because we need a certain number of people to attend (a quorum) and our membership has been increasing. Don’t YOU be the reason why we have to have a do-over.

2. Because this is YOUR organization, and if you don’t let us know what you like or dislike, then we might just go ahead and do what we please.

1. Because there will be a scrumptious free lunch (pizza, yay) before the AGM, at 12:00. However, if you come for the lunch you are honour bound to stay for the meeting.

I’m excited to announce that we have more candidates running to fill Board positions than we have vacancies for. This is great news and speaks to the vibrancy of our organization. Note that nominations are NOT closed, and if you have been thinking of throwing your hat into the ring, (or toque into the basket) you can submit your names to Jeannette Provo, our ED., to any member of the Board, or be nominated from the floor at the AGM. Remember, if you see a turtle on top of a fence post he didn’t get there by himself.

from the desk

of the Executive Director

A great deal of work has been completed and continues when being on a board of directors. Many thanks to all of you!

We will be hosting another Fashion Show on April 15th, as well as our Volunteer Ap-preciation event on April the 1st. Please ensure that you get tickets for the Fashion Show soon as we had to turn people away last time. We also need to know how many of our volunteers will be joining us for the event on April 1st, so get you name on the list. This is to ensure that we have enough food for all attending.

Please note that for the monthly lunches you need to purchase tickets by the week before the event. The food is ordered in advance; therefore, we have to have the number of people who will be attending the week before. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Welcome to spring all! And the luck of the Irish!

We have interesting entertainment for the monthly lunch on Monday March 16th. We hope that you will enjoy it. This group is travel-ling across Canada to entertain and will be in Calgary to entertain at a number of venues. Please purchase your ticket soon to be a part of this lovely afternoon.

Spring…. another of my favourite times of year! Flowers coming out, walking and fresh air…you just cannot go wrong with spring.

March 18th is our Annual General Meeting and we encourage you to join us. Lunch will be served at 12:00, with the meeting to follow at 1:00. After the election, we will serve desserts and share announcements, followed by meet-ing the new board of directors.

I would like to thank the current board on be-half of the staff for all the hard work they have put in this past year. I would also like to thank Wendy Rodger for her work on the board as President from March to September of 2019.

book review

Book of Joy

“No dark fate determines the future. We do. Each day and each moment, we are able to create and re-create our lives and the very quality of human life on our planet. That is the power we wield.” The book of Joy. The author was Douglas Carlton Abrams, editor and the founder of the literary agency Idea Architects.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu travelled to Dharamsala, India to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday with him and to engage in a multi-day conversation with him about joy. The dialogue took place be-tween April 18 and April 24, 2015. During the momentous occasion they were constantly surrounded by a film crew which they managed to ignore and were able to have a conversation between just the two of them.

Day 1 - The nature of true joy. From the beginning, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu included all of us, the entire human population, in the conversation and reiterated repeatedly that we are all respon-sible for developing a happier more joyful world. They expressed concern that today people focus too much on external, materialistic values and not enough on inner values like kindness and compassion.

Days 2 and 3 - The obstacles to joy. Two days were devoted to all the ways that human beings suffer from fear, stress, anxiety, anger, frustration, sadness, grief, loneliness, envy, illness, and fear of death. It might seem like it would be depressing or distressing to read these chapters, but they both approach suffering from a different perspective and share how joy can coexist with suffering and that suffering may actually lead to unexpected joy.

Days 4 and 5 - The eight pillars of joy. The last two days were devoted to talking about the foundation of joy including qualities of the mind: perspective, humility, humour, and acceptance and qualities of the heart: forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity, “Ultimately, joy is not something to learn, it is something to live. And our greatest joy is lived in deep, loving, and generous relationships with others.” - The Book of Joy.

The bottom line - The Book of Joy is a beautifully crafted work of inspiration, hope, and joy co-created by the three men listed on the book jacket and many people behind the scenes - Dalai Lama, Des-mond Tuto and Douglas Carlton Abrams.

The next book club meeting is March 3, 2020 at 12:45pm and the book Women Heroes of World War II by Kathryn J Atwood.

t&c sponsor message

Five New Year’s resolutions for seniors 1. De-clutter. While sifting through a lifetime’s worth of possessions may feel overwhelming for some seniors, there are huge benefits of de-cluttering. First, decluttering can mitigate the risk of trips and falls. In addition, it can help them access what they need more easily. 2. Try something new. Maybe it’s learning a few phrases in a foreign language or visiting the local farmers market. No matter the activity, it’s sure to bring a smile and renewed sense of purpose. 3. Be active. We all know the importance of staying active. For seniors, staying active can help restore their sense of independence. Set an exercise goal in 2020. Don’t be afraid to start small, with a few walks around the block per week, and work up to something more advanced, such as water aerobics or yoga. 4. Socialize. Social isolation affects millions of seniors, and it can lead to serious health risks. Dial up a good friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while. Bake cookies together and then deliver them to a neighbor. Check out a local event they might like. Possibilities are endless. 5. Play brain games. Brain games are a great way for individuals to keep their mind sharp. Break out a crossword puzzle, word puzzle or Sudoku and get to work. Aim to complete a couple each week. Cheers to 2020 and a new decade of Changing the Face of Aging®

SATURDAY NIGHT DANCESLooking for Volunteer Help!

Old time dances, suitable for all senior members, are held in the social room on the second and fourth Saturdays each month until June, as well as from September to early December.

Volunteer help is needed at approximately two or three dances per session (you will not be needed at every dance unless you intend to be there to only dance). Duties include setting up the room for the evening, helping with the light lunch which is prepared ahead of time, bar tending, selling guest tickets, bar tickets, and helping with a 50/50 draw. These duties would be shared with several other volunteers at each dance.

These scheduled dances have been in operation at the Centre since the 1980s and are a fund-raising event for Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre. Please contact Richard or Debbie at the Centre – 403-289-4780 and they will refer you to one of the Dance Committee members who will provide more information for you.

workshop

Connecting to Community Moving from Success to Significance

What is your passion in life? Join us for a very engaging and informative workshop on how you can build an exciting future for retirement or semi-retirement.

This workshop is designed to first help you discover or confirm that passion that may have always been there but you have never fully pursued it. The workshop will also present hundreds of possibilities of where to invest your time, talent and energy in Calgary and beyond in meaningful ways that you never believed were possible.

This workshop is for those who have not had this opportunity to do this before or who would like a refresher course.

Please join us for an exhilarating day of discovery and building a plan for your future!

volunteer appreciation

George and Ellen don’t have a fixed volunteer schedule with their travels but they help whenever they can. They are a joy to be with and are sure to bring a smile to your face.

Sandy and Rick Staple have been volunteering at Confedera-tion Park 55+ Activity Centre for 10 years, involved in dancing and music. You can see Sandy and Rick either on the dance floor or the stage.

Jeannie and Michael McCauley have been volunteering at Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre for 10 years. You have cer-tainly seen Jeannie attend several classes and Michael as our bartender.

Pat and Keith Cornelius have been volunteering for 17 years. You can watch them decorate the hall for special events, volunteer-ing at the Garage Sale or dancing with the Gliders. Whenever you need a helping hand Pat and Keith will be there.

As we recognize our volunteers in the newly created quarterly appreciation segment of the Gazette, say a thank you to all of our volunteers who so generously give of their time to make our programs run smoothly. Your selfless efforts, sharing your time and talents and compassion serve as an inspiration for all of us.

Interested in placing your name forward as a member of the Board?

Serving on a volunteer board is one of the most personally and professionally rewarding experiences you can imagine. Non-profit organizations rely on strong leadership to drive change, achieve their missions all under the guidance of the organization’s strategic plan.

Here is an analogy that may help you make your decision. It is like a bus on a highway. The board sets the direction of the highway, the Executive Director drives the bus, the staff turn the wheels and the members are the passengers.

So are you interested in charting the course of the centre? Well then, get on board!
