Vol. 9 No. 32May 2015

Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers, Our 16-page, May 2015 issue has 12 news stories; announcements of the Institute publications for 2014-2015 and future trainings; the usual Paper Presentation page, a listing of where our faculty and staff read their academic papers in conferences here and abroad; and, half a page introducing more members of our Gazette family. This issue emphasizes two big events: the Gendered Development Intervention (GDI) International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation and the 22nd Iligan National Writers Workshop, both held in May this year. We also highlight the attendance of Mr. Emerito B. Batara during the 15th University Museums and Collections International Conference held at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, the Australia fellowship award of the College of Education’s Dr. Ruben I. Abucayon, the academic and research agreement between the MSU-IIT and Far Eastern University (FEU), trainings our faculty underwent and the Metallurgical Engineering passers in 2014. This issue likewise departs from the usual use of tenses in journalism by using the historical present in all articles to somehow enliven those news stories that had happened sometime back. Our Gazette is expected to come out each month but bureaucratic procedures and other factors seem to always delay what we ideally want to do. Soon, the Gazette will begin to feature MSU-IIT constituents in the future issues, by providing a Forum Page where invited administrators, faculty and staff are featured for a Q&A portion with our reporters. Our cover focuses on May as the month of writers workshops. Our Special Assistant Michelle Jeanne lends a hand by writing down Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If ”. Finally, do send feedback to [email protected]. But, only those who give their real names and addresses will be given attention. Cheers!

GDIC 2015: Changing Climate, Changing Perspectives, Evolving Practicesby Amado C. Guinto, Jr. CASS

The Institute gathers international experts and paper presenters from different universities in the country and in Asia last May 21

to 23 for the first international conference to be hosted by MSU-IIT in recent years. The Gendered Development Intervention (GDI) Conference: Focus on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation opens at the beautifully-decorated College of Engineering Amphi-Theater amid performances by the Institute’s internationally-acclaimed Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG). The conference, keynoted by Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes of the Crawford School of Public Policy, College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, is a response to the belief that most natural disasters today are induced by hydro-meteorological factors such as heavy rains, droughts, floods, and storm surges – factors which result from climate change. Nantes, who is an expert on resources, environment, and development, echoes the conference’s call that preparedness and other community empowerment initiatives that enhance the disaster resiliency of communities are imperative to mitigate disaster impact. Conference lead organizer and political science professor Elaine C. Macamay-Baulete says that an important focus of the conference is on gender since climate change and natural and even man-made disasters “cause more sufferings among the vulnerable

sectors of the community which include women, children, and the elderly population.” Baulete explains that the conference provides “the opportunity to narrow, if not close the gap between knowledge generated from the academe and the practices of government functionaries and Civil Society Organizations (CSO).” She adds that the conference also gives students, researchers, advocates, planners, extension workers, CSO workers, and local government workers the opportunity to exchange notes on their researches, best practices, and pioneering projects/interventions on climate change adaptation and disaster management. The three-day international conference features four experts from leading universities in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Hawaii as plenary speakers. Dr. G.P. Ganapathy of the Center for Disaster Mitigation and Management of VIT University in Tamil Nadu, India is the speaker for Plenary Session 1 on the first day of the conference. The plenary speakers for the second day of the conference are Dr. Achmad Nurmandi of the Jusuf Kalla School of Governance of the Universitas Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta, Indonesia; Dr. Fadzilah Majid Cooke, a professor of environmental sociology from the Universiti Malaysia Sabah in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia; and Dr. Federico V. Magdalena of the Center for Philippine Studies of the

Highlighting MSU-IIT’s biological treasuresby Ian S. Embradura, OPI

Unknown to many, there is a collection of treasures just sitting quietly in shelves in a dimly-lit room in the Institute.

This collection – largely forgotten and unappreciated – can be found in the Institute’s Natural Science Museum located at the College of Science and Mathematics. This collection, composed of 110 specimens, has been donated to MSU-IIT by the father of Philippine conservation, the late Dr. Discoro S. Rabor. Through the efforts of the Institute’s Natural Science Museum in-charge, Mr. Emerito B. Batara, these biological treasures in the Institute’s growing collection will once again be given the attention they deserve. Representing MSU-IIT at the 15th University Museums and Collections (UMAC) International Conference held at the University of Sto. Tomas, Manila on May 11-14, 2015, Batara highlighted the museum gems of the Institute to representatives of 16 countries who attended the conference. With the theme “Rethinking University Museums: Bridging Theory and Practice,” the conference provides an avenue for those in such field in preserving and providing access to national and international heritage. In collaboration with Dr. Luisito Evangelista of the National Museum of the Philippines and Dr. Ayumi Terada of the University of Tokyo, Batara and his team present their poster paper entitled, “A

Glimpse of Dr. Rabor’s Collection at MSU-IIT – A Biological Treasure.” Batara is one of only two delegates from Mindanao to the conference. The poster features Rabor and his contribution to the Institute’s museum. Rabor is a former professor at Siliman University and at the MSU Marawi Main Campus where he taught for six years during the 1970s. However, his career as conservationist and field researcher of zoology runs for more than half of the 20th century, as briefly narrated in the poster. Rabor donates a variety of 102 bird specimens and 8 mammals to the Natural Science Museum of IIT. His collection areas include Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Lanao, Camiguin, Agusan, Surigao, and even Negros. According to Batara, through their poster presentation, he seeks to put IIT on the map across Mindanao. Batara has been working at the Institute’s museum for almost 30 years now, from the time he earned his degree in BS Biology Major in Zoology from the Institute. Serving as technician, curator, and in-charge of the maintenance and preservation, he finds his job both challenging and interesting. Plans of expanding the galleries are already in mind, he says. Batara takes pride of working in an environment where he could provide access to knowledge and learning, and in showcasing the zoological wonders of Mindanao.

Abucayon receives Australia Awards Fellowship

by Jun Karren V. Caparoso, CED

Dr. Ruben L. Abucayon of the College of Education (CED) has been selected as one of the fellows to the Australia Awards 2015

Fellowship Programme on Digital Literacy. The former Acting Dean of CED will go on a month-long fellowship in Australia on “Fostering Digital Literacy: Developing Multimedia Modules on Educational Leadership and Teaching”. Abucayon, along with 14 other fellows, will travel to different parts of Australia, such as Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide to develop their modules and work on their action plans from June 1 to 27, 2015. The fellowship, which is hosted by Queensland University of Technology (QUT), is granted through the proposal of the University of the East to the Australia Awards 2015 Fellowship Programme on Digital Literacy. Abucayon is one of the five accepted as fellows from the original six who were recommended by the country’s Resource Distribution and Training Center (RDTC)-TEIs. CED becomes one of the UNESCO RDTCs for the Philippines in 2012 after Abucayon, the Audiovisual Media Center Coordinator of the College, is trained at UNESCO-Bangkok in Thailand. The other fellows from the RDTC network are Johnson Blanco (Mariano Marcos State University), Elenita Que (University of the Philippines), Anne Cherylle Ramos (University of Santo Tomas) and Cynthia Grace Diaz (University of the East). They are joined by a DepEd Supervisor, a Supervising Education Program Specialist of CHED, and eight ICT practitioners from the various universities in the country. “Fostering Digital Literacy Fellowship” aims to improve and extend the integration of ICT into the Philippine Educational System. The fellowship will serve as an avenue for the sharing of insights among educators who are leaders, innovators, thinkers, and strategists in the development of sustainable and inclusive digital pedagogies. It will also give perspectives from both Australian and global landscapes, which will transform thinking and inspire innovation, that can be applied to the Philippine education system. The program will form sustainable connections between education leaders in Australia and the Philippines. As a consequence of this collaboration and capacity building, user-friendly and assessable modules will be developed for educational leaders and teachers. The fellows are expected to develop a portfolio of innovative and interactive examples of multimedia resources that demonstrate leadership in digital literacy, critically discuss and analyze examples of institutional ICT frameworks and policies, and implementation plans for learning and teaching in the digital age, as well as build strategic collaborations and partnerships between QUT staff and other participating members of the Australian education system.

Institute Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol returns to Malaysia to participate anew in this year’s University Presidents Forum (UPF)

that is organized by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Tanggol joins the 7th UPF held last May 12-14, 2015 at UTM’s Johor Bahru Campus as panelist on the topic: Strengthening ASEAN University Networking. “It is quite an honor for us to be invited again considering that I am not a President of a University,” Tanggol says. “However, being asked to join the UPF is really a recognition for our school,” he adds. The UPF is a meeting of heads of selected universities that aims to provide a platform wherein University Presidents could discuss ways to strengthen the roles and relevance of universities, as well as take up other relevant issues related to higher education. It is organized as a response to the challenges facing universities in these competitive times when the world is getting smaller due to

advances in technology and travel. Tanggol is asked to return by the organizers of the UPF 2015 because “we believe your vast experience will be invaluable.” For his part, the Chancellor believes that meeting leaders of 38 universities and institutions from around the world is very good for MSU-IIT’s efforts of establishing new linkages. “It is now a matter of how we exploit this,” he says. Tanggol also plans to use the materials collected at the forum from the various keynotes and presentations given by speakers from Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and other parts of the world. “These materials can give us ideas on how big universities are able to accomplish so many things that can aid us in our quest to become a research university,” he says. The theme for the UPF 2015 is “Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Nation Building.”

“ Artists are the new mythmakers, and mythology is nothing if not the “song of the imagination,” the “music of the spheres,” motivated by the energies of the body, spurred by nothing if not the simple experience of being alive. The artist’s highest calling is to awaken in his or her audiences an awareness of the inner and spiritual dimensions of existence. His or her noblest task is to imagine and to render the world as magical, awe-inspiring, and rapturous once more, by infusing myth’s profound power into the shapes of his or her expression. Campbell surmises that, at the very least, outside the sacred and epic themes, the sensuous from the art reveals to us the radiance of the transcendent because it reflects the fortunate symmetry, order, and inner harmony of our own lives....What should the Filipino writer’s fundamental attitude toward mythology be? Is it simply material to be used, or recognize and ultimatley acquisce to the uncertain and the numinous in our midst, the mysterium tremendum et fascinans? “

CED professors attend STAR Project training by Jun Karren V. Caparoso, CED

College of Education (CED) faculty members Charity Mulig-Cruz of the Integrated Development School and Ellen J. Castro and this

writer from the Department of Science and Mathematics Education attend the Training of Trainers on Inquiry-based Science Teaching Approach at Punta de Fabian Resort, Baras, Rizal on May 5-8, 2015. The five-day training is conducted by the Department of Science and Technology- Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) as part of its Science Teacher Academy for the Regions (STAR) Project. It aims to train Science Education professors in the teaching of Science using the Inquiry Approach, which is an important feature of the K to 12 Science Curriculum. MSU-IIT is one of the universities that signs a Memorandum of Understanding with DOST-SEI last December 2, 2014 for the STAR Project. This month’s training of trainers and an upcoming regional in-service training in August are just two of the many activities organized by CED and DOST-SEI under the STAR project. Last year, three Mathematics Education faculty members of the college train in “Teaching Elementary Math through Problem Solving” and successfully conduct several echo trainings in Regions IX and X. The training in Baras, Rizal is facilitated by five science teachers of Philippine Science High School-Central Luzon Campus. The training also sees the facilitators demonstrating sample lessons and activities on select topics from the K to 12 Science Curriculums in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science and Research/Investigatory Projects for Grades 7 and 8.

Participating in the training are Science Education professors/instructors from Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU-Laoag), West Visayas State University (WVSU), Bicol University (BU), Central Luzon State University (CLSU), and MSU-IIT. Representatives from the DepEd Regional Offices for Regions I,III,VI, and X of the participating schools also attend the training. Working in groups, the participants develop sample inquiry lesson plans, which are then presented and critiqued. A meaningful discussion – focusing primarily on the sequencing of the topics, appropriateness of assessment tools and strategy, and readiness of learners for a certain task – follow every lesson presentation. Representatives of the participating universities, together with their DepEd regional supervisors, work on their respective action plan and training design for the regional in-service training, which will then be participated in by four Master Teachers and one Education Program Supervisor (in Science) from each division of the region. The Master Teachers, who are assumed to be representing the four fields of specialization in Science, are expected to echo the training to their respective divisions while the Education Program Supervisors are tasked to provide the necessary support to ensure the success of the activity. For Region X, the DepEd Regional Office, through Mr. Marino O. Dal, will communicate with the participants regarding the echo training and take charge of their accommodation while DOST-SEI will provide the training materials and food. MSU-IIT will provide the venue and the trainers for the said activity, which is tentatively scheduled on August 12 to 14, 2015.

4 make it to top 10 in Met Eng’g Licensure Exam

by Sarah Elizabeth N. Allen, CASS

In a development that serves to bolster the reputation of MSU-IIT as a top university for science and engineering, four graduates taking

the September 2014 Metallurgical Engineering Licensure Exam make it to the top 10. This victory in the licensure exam administered by the Board of Metallurgical Engineering is a testament to the capability of the Institute to produce top calibre graduates in the field of engineering. The Department of Metallurgical Engineering of the College of Engineering identified the four topnotchers as the following: Charlemagne J. Jagus, 3rd; Gerstwin P. Benignos, 7th; Mary Joan Kathryn L. Tejano, 8th; and Jeffrey Ken B. Balangao, 9th. The Department , however, views the exam results as bitter-sweet for only 17 out of the 29 examinees of the Institute actually passed the licensure exam. Metallurgy is a domain of materials science and engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their intermetallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are called alloys. MSU-IIT is one of only two schools in the entire Philippines that offer the metallurgical engineering program. The other school is the University of the Philippines.

Two faculty members of the School of Engineering Technology (SET) make it to the May 12, 2015 finals of a video-making contest that

seeks to promote technical and vocational education training (TVET) that is sponsored by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) of the Philippines. The Tatak TESDA Video Making Contest Year 2 is a three-minute video contest that aims to document success stories of TVET graduates and create greater awareness for TESDA’s programs and activities. The video entries of SET faculty members Faith Q. Baldonado (for the individual category) and Roque B. Requino (for the school category) make it to the finals after these win in the regional level and are chosen to represent Region 10 at the national competition. Baldonado and Requino’s video entries compete in their respective categories for Best in Story, Best in Video, People’s Choice Award, and for the Grand Prize. At the awarding ceremony, however, it is Meryll Lhorvin Santos from the National Capital Region who wins the grand prize for the individual category while Westmin Institute of Technology, Inc. of Zamboanga Sibugay wins for the school category. Baldonado is a BS in Industrial Automation and Mechatronics Summa Cum Laude graduate of MSU-IIT (April 2009). She is presently working as a faculty member at the SET’s Industrial Automation and Control ET (IACET) Department. Requino is an Electrical Engineering Technology graduate of the Institute who holds a Master’s degree in Teaching Technology Education from Mindanao Polytechnic State College. He is currently a part of the faculty force of the SET’s IACET Department.

MSU-IIT’s Institute for Peace & Development in Mindanao:A forerunner of peace and conflict management

by Datu Esma Mikee P. Maruhom, OPI

The Institute for Peace & Development in Mindanao (IPDM) continues to become a strong unit in advancing peace among

groups in the MINSUPALA region. With its scope becoming wider, IPDM proves to be a viable center for reconciliation and peace-building towards an advanced and conflict-ridden landscape in the region. Venturing into formal education reforms towards Bangsamoro education biases, IPDM expands its mandate not only as a facilitator for peace efforts but as a forerunner of peace and conflict management activities. As an institution with the mandate of integrating indigenous peoples to mainstream Philippine society, the Mindanao State University System continues to fulfill its role in promoting and advocating peace and harmony in the diverse land of Mindanao. Through BOR Resolution No. 107, series of 2007, the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) was created as an active response by the MSU System to Executive Order 570, series of 2006 in institutionalizing and integrating peace education in the country. MSU-IIT’s IPDM is one of the seven units spread across the university system. Prior to its establishment as an independent unit under the Office of the Chancellor of the MSU-IIT, IIT already created the Iligan Center for Peace Education and Research (IPECR) through the efforts of Dr. Luis Q. Lacar and Vice Chancellor Jimmy Y. Balacuit. IIT’s current Campus Secretary, Dr. Jamail A. Kamlian, served as the IPECR’s first director, followed by Dr. Marilou S. Nanaman. During the term of Dr. Nanaman, the IPECR was renamed to IPDM in accordance with the resolution of the Board of Regents. The subsequent transformation of the IPECR to IPDM made significant changes to the contribution of MSU-IIT to peace-building efforts. The role of IPDM today – as the peace arm of IIT – can be classified into three areas, namely: peace education, peace and conflict research, and peace action. IPDM’s major activities at present revolve around helping with the resolution of the Mindanao conflict, particularly in the

peace agreement between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the government. This is so because the IPDM is a formal partner of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC). Creative and formal approaches are being undertaken in educating various stakeholders on the developments of the peace process through Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) consultations. The IPDM also promotes the teaching of Mindanao History as a component of education. This is done through a series of teachers’ trainings; seminars on building resilient communities through Culture of Peace (CoP); conduct of peace and conflict studies; and the involvement of the youth sector in peace building activities through its youth organization, MSU-IIT Youth Chain of Peace (MYCoP). Besides formal trainings and fora, the IPDM also annually holds various activities in line with peace-building promotion. The IPDM celebrates the Mindanao Week of Peace with activities such as the Peace Music Video, Short Film Festival, Mindanao Peace of Art, and other interfaith engagements. The unit is currently involved in the Teachers’ Training for Mindanao History in the University of Hiroshima in Japan, Peace Module Development in the University of Hawaii in USA, and the integration of Bangsamoro History into the K12 curriculum. Under the leadership of Prof. Juvanni Caballero and the current officer-in-charge, Dr. Mark Anthony Torres, IPDM has grown into a unit with various multi-sectoral linkages. At present, the IPDM is connected with the Lanao Peace Partnership Think Tank Meetings together with EcoWeb, PAILIG Foundation, Inc, Kapamagogopa Inc. (KI) and the Civil Society Organizations – Forum for Peace (CSO-FP). The IPDM is also presently connected with various international organizations such as The Asia Foundation, PeaceTech, The World Bank, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), among others.

Second Summer Term Opens in Juneby Ian S. Embradura, OPI

As a consequence of the shift to an August opening, the Institute is opening a second summer term to deal with a vacant June and July.

The Institute’s decision to open a second summer term, which begins on the second week of June, would also justify the giving of salaries to the faculty for the two-month duration, says Dr. Edgar W. Ignacio, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Aside from the teaching load, Ignacio adds that the faculty members also have the option of doing their part in the “redesigning of the curricula and crafting of the syllabi” in preparation for August. This also has a bearing in realizing the Institute’s vision of internationalization, he adds. To recall, BOR Resolution No. 404, S. 2014 moves MSU-IIT’s academic calendar from June-March to August-May in preparation for ASEAN Integration. The calendar shift will have the Institute in sync

with the Universities from the country’s ASEAN neighbors. According to Ignacio, the colleges are left with the prerogative to open subjects for the students to enrol in. However, the number of course offerings in the second summer does not even reach half of that in the first summer. Ignacio says that majority of the courses offered or to be offered in both summer terms are Undergraduate Thesis and Research Methods. Ignacio also adds that there is a big difference in the number of enrolees in the first and second summer terms. The first summer term has 5,135 enrolees while the second only has 1,110. The Office of the Institute Registrar has also provided the numbers that show how the first summer term had more course offerings, with 348 subjects opened, than that of the second summer term with only 137 subjects opened.

MSU-IIT signs academic and research agreement with FEU by Ian S. Embradura, OPI

MSU-IIT through its College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) makes formal its agreement with Far Eastern University (FEU)

to undertake future collaborations that would foster the relationship of the two schools. Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Dr. David N. Almarez and FEU Dean of the Institute of Arts and Sciences Dr. Joel M. Chavez sign the Memorandum of Agreement on May 29, 2015 at the MSU-IIT Boardroom. Areas of concern in the MOA include teacher and student exchanges, research collaboration, and academic cooperation such as trainings and seminars. Specific plans and proposals are also discussed by the corresponding departments. At the MOA signing, the FEU delegation also express their great interest in Mindanao’s culture and folklore. The plan for collaboration between the two Institutions dates back to 2013 when several faculty members of the Department of English presented this during the 11th ASIA TEFL International Conference in Manila. The benchmarking of curriculums and facilities is what brought the CASS to have an initial engagement with FEU, says Prof.

Jean Graciela E. Peñola, Chairperson of the English Department. However, it is only recently that the planned partnership between the two is revived. Due to the English Department’s application for Center of Excellence with the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), the CASS is able to re-establish ties with former students who have excelled in their respective careers, one of which is Mr. Arthur Pizaro who is presently connected with FEU. It only takes FEU a few days to confirm and schedule the MOA signing for what took two years since its initial planning. The FEU delegation is composed of its Institute of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Joel M. Chavez and respective program heads: Jorge P. Ciubillas of the Filipino Department, Diego Jose R. Abad from Literature, Ildefonso Fulgar from Political Science, Ana Nelia Jumamil of the Psychology Department, and other faculty members, Roger Bingculado and Arthur Pizaro. The representatives for IIT are Almarez, the Department Chairpersons of CASS, and some faculty members of the English Department. This tie-up with FEU initiated by CASS is only the beginning of a partnership that would expand across disciplines, says Peñola.

LANGGA by Honeylet E. Dumoran

More join Gazette family Ian S. Embradura, Staff Writer. A cum laude graduate of the AB English program, Ian joins the OPI straight from the April 2015 Commencement Exercises of the Institute. He used to be the Associate Editor of the CASS Yearbook, Handuraw, and is now designated as a writer for the Gazette. This native of Ozamiz City describes himself as a cinephile who can bear to watch old, black and white movies – even the silent ones.

Datu Esma Mikee P. Maruhom, Contributor. Mikee is an incoming fourth year AB English student of the Institute who is passionately involved in all matters of student welfare in the university. He is the current Student Regent of the Mindanao State University System and the 2015 Outstanding Youth Leader of Iligan Awardee. Mikee is also the immediate past president of the Institute student government, KASAMA, and the current president of the Iligan City Tertiary Schools Association. He regularly speaks in various student seminars. Mikee volunteers as a writer and assistant at the OPI because he loves to write and do volunteer work, especially for the community.

Rohanimah B. Guro, Contributor. Rohanimah, or Ace, as she is fondly called, is an incoming fourth year AB English student of MSU-IIT. An articulate public speaker by nature, Ace is the current Prime Minsiter of the MSU-IIT Debate Varsity and is a known debate adjudicator and trainer. She and her team are the champion of the 2015 Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championship. Ace volunteers for OPI as a writer and events secretariat. She is a blogger since 2010.

“When my children had classes in CASS, I used to tell them never to approach me while I was working. I was afraid my janitor’s uniform and my broomstick would embarrass them in front of their friends,” OC utility personnel Angga recalls, as she wipes the countertop in the pantry, where the Office’s giant coffee boiler sits. Not having finished school herself, Angga’s proudest moment is having to dress up for graduation day, during which she received with her children their academic awards. All of her four children are now professionals, with degrees in Engineering Technology, AB-Filipino, BEEd-English and BEEd-MAPEH. She remembers how she used to apportion what little food they could afford to each one in the family, always with an apology to the younger kids who wanted more, and also always with the unembarrassed certainty of better days that would come with next month’s pay, or with the children’s college diplomas. Those of us who went to the College of Arts and Social Sciences would recall Angga as the plump and perky helpmate, who always

cheerfully lent a hand to the organization officers and members of the student Executive Council. She helped serve food, set up backdrops, and dismantle giant parade floats–tasks that were beyond her duties as janitress, and those which have endeared her to us as students. At present, Angga works at the Office of the Chancellor, where, among her other duties, she sees to it that the Chancellor’s usual lunch of fish, egg and soup is bought and prepared. The Chancellor fondly calls her Langga, a play on her name, and a clipping of the Sebuano endearment for beloved—connotative also of one who serves quietly. Langga runs various errands for the Office, always in her unassuming disposition, and always with a sense of personal gratitude for the University that had given her sons and daughters their education, and with that, a different future. Born Helen S. Bacus to Siquijodnon parents, Angga is the ninth of fifteen children. Now 51, she is a lola to seven grandchildren, which includes a set of twins.
