You've no doubt heardabout the risks associatedwith investing. This invest-ment carries this type ofrisk, while that investmentcarries another oneAnd it is certainly truethat al investments doinvolve some formof risk. But what about not invest-ing? Isnt there somerisk associated withthat, too?In fact, by stayingon the investmentsideines, or at leastby avoiding long-term growth-ori-ented investments, you may incur sev-era risks. Here aresome to consider:

You mght notkeep up with infla-tion. If you put alyour money under theproverbia "mattress," or,more reaisticaly, you keepit al in "cash" instrumentsand very short-terminvest-ments, you mght thnk youare "paying it safe"After al, you mght rea-son, your principa is pro-tected, so even if you don'trealy make any money, you're not losing it, ether. But that's not strictly true, becauseif your moneyis in investment vehiclesthat dont even keep upwith inflation, you can loseground. In fact, even at a rea-tivey mld three percentannua inflation rate, yourpurchasing power willdecline by about haf in just25 years. You mght outlive yourmoney. For a 65-year-oldcoupe theres a 50 percentchance that one spouse willlive past age 90, accordingto the Society of Actuaries. This statistic suggeststhat you may need yourinvestments to hep provideenough income to sustanyou for two, or even three, decades in retirement. You mght not be ableto mantan your financiaindependence

Even if you don't tota-ly run out of money, youcould end up scrimpingby or, even worse, youcould become somewhatdependent on your grownchildren for financia assis-tance For most peope thsprospect is unacceptabeConsequently, you'llwant to make

appropriate finan-cia decisions tohep mantan yourfinancia indepen-denceYou mght notbe able to retire on

your terms. Youwould probablylike to decide whenyou retire and howyou'll retire thatis, what sort of life-style you'll pursueduring retirement. But both these choicesmay be taken out of yourhands if you haven't invest-ed enough to retire on yourown terms. You mght not be abe toleave the type of legacy youdesire. Like most peope, you woud probaby like tobe abe to leave somethingbehind to your famly andto those charitable organi-zations you support. You can hep create thistype of legacy through theappropriate lega vehicles i.e, a will, a living trustand so on but you'll stillneed to fund these mecha-nsms somehow. And that means you'llneed to draw on al yourfinancia assets, includingyour investments.Work with your finan-cia advisor to determnethe mxture of growth andincome investments youneed during your work-ing years and as you movetoward retirement to hepyou meet your retirementgoas. However you do it, getinto the habit of investing, and never lose it becausethe risks of not investingare just too great.
