Flying Start The sun was shining on Monday morning, after a beautiful snowy weekend, in readiness for another fabulous Flying Start session. This week we read and discussed ‘Edwina the Emu’ picture book by Mem Fox. Then we made mini emus out of paper plates and shredded coloured paper. All students were excited to go outside and play on the fixed equipment before home time. There are six Flying Start sessions this year. Orientation Week will be held in Term 4. We hope we see you all again next Monday morning.

Billy Woods cuts out people from the play dough.

Elouise likes cooking sandwiches and putting the kettle on.

Ivy plays with her friends, dressing the Barbies and giving

them a ride in the car.

Maaz Shah plays hopscotch next to the fixed equipment.

Henry Butler enjoys the fixed equipment in the sunshine.

Batman joined last Monday’s Flying Start session.

Dorothy Lindner is rugged up and waiting her turn to cross

the wobbly steps.

Developmental Play Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 continued their fun afternoon activities last Friday. There was ‘Flying Start’ play available in the kindergarten room, coding and Lego for those children who wished to extend their technology interests and Zumba fitness for those students who love to move and dance. Free painting was also offered which allowed students the freedom and creative space to express themselves artistically.

Lily Briggs creates a loving message for her parents.

Gemma Chandler paints a beautiful rainbow.

Charlotte Tetley, Charli Kelly, Tommy Dunn and Jordan Tate

are about to create a masterpiece on their Clingfilm.

AgriTECH Workshops On Wednesday, Stage 3 were fortunate enough to have another opportunity to further extend their learning in STEM through the AgriTECH workshop. Students engaged in two different activities aimed to expand their understanding of the innovative ways in which technology is influencing agricultural practices. Students used accelerometers and iPads to track the movement of their peers in an activity called ‘FitBits for Cows’ which was aimed at enhancing their understanding of how movement sensors could be used in livestock production. They also undertook a second activity called ‘Sweet Science’ where they used a device called a refractometer to test the sweetness of different fruits. The day was very successful with students and teachers enjoying the opportunity for some hands on experience with some exciting new science concepts.

A ‘wild dog’ and a ‘herd of cattle’ prepare to test out the

accelerometers.

In the future, accelerometers could be used to help prevent

wild dog attacks on livestock such as this!

Year 6 students wait with anticipation to begin their next

activity.

Even though lemons have higher sugar content than

strawberries Cameron still finds them to be rather sour!

Year 5 students monitor the movement of the animals in their

‘herd.’

Harry Bailey tests the sugar content of fruit using the

refractometer.

GCOPS Performance Last Thursday, students from Crookwell Public School travelled to Goulburn for their final rehearsal for the Goulburn Community of Public Schools (GCOPS) Concert which was to be held that night. Both the final rehearsal and the performance itself was a huge success with our students showcasing their incredible talents as musicians, dancers, singers and performers. Mrs Hayes and Miss Bell could not have been prouder of the efforts of every student involved.

Did you know? Singing is scientifically proven to benefit your

health.

Singing as a part of a choir is scientifically proven to have the same positive effects on your wellbeing as yoga.

Cultivating musical skills benefits all other areas of study.

Music is a great conversation piece that you can take with you anywhere.

Kindergarten’s Visit to the Town Library On Tuesday morning Mr Harrop’s Year 2 class walked down the street to the local town library. After Year 2’s session with Michaela Olde, Kindergarten walked down for their session. We read a picture book about a dad who is very tall and discussed Fathers’ Day, which is fast approaching. Both classes decorated and cut out some cardboard ties to give to their dads, grandads, pops, uncles or loved ones for Fathers’ Day in September. The infants students are enjoying their visits to the town library each week and love borrowing new books to read in our classrooms.

Faith, Aria and Kai use textas and paper to decorate their

cardboard ties.

Olivia, Isabelle, Laura and Charlie are happy to sit at the

special table to complete their craft activity.

Riley Hill and Levi Nieves are impressed with the ties they

made.

“Some books you read. Some books you enjoy. But some books just swallow you

up, heart and soul.” – Joanne Harris

Lily Briggs and Owen Moorby take some time to read

through the picture books. They selected a great book to borrow for the classroom.

Cooper Norris is very happy with his book choice.

Lids for Kids Students and staff at CPS have joined Crookwell High School and many other organisations across the region, to collect plastic lids to support kids with disabilities. The lids are processed and transformed into prosthetic hands or arms for kids in under-serviced countries. Soft drink, milk, water bottle lids and bread clips can be collected at home and brought into the school collection bin. Tops which cannot be processed include those with additional plastic or metal attached. Let’s see how quickly we can fill our collection bin!

secretary, are pictured with the CPS first place winners in the CWA Country of Study project for 2019.

Charlie Colley, pictured with Mrs Marshall, won first prize for his amazing country of study project on Papua New Guinea. His project has been selected to go through to the next round

of judging in the Southern Tablelands area.

Mr Nedanoski’s replacement As most of you would already know, Mr Nedanoski injured himself at school at the end of Week 2. Mr Nedanoski has been given time off work by his doctor so he can receive treatment for his injury and have time to recover.

In his absence we have employed Mrs Lesley Atfield to take Mr Nedansoki’s class. Mrs Atfield has worked at our school as a casual and temporary staff member over the years and knows the school, students and families very well. Mrs Atfield is enjoying being back at CPS and is continuing the teaching and learning program for Mr Nedanoski’s class.

For consistency we will continue to employ Mrs Atfield until Mr Nedanoski returns. We wish Mr Nedanoski a speedy recovery and welcome Mrs Atfield back to the CPS team. Thank you Mrs Atfield for answering our call of need, we greatly appreciate you coming back to CPS to ensure the best possible outcomes for students can be achieved!

Fundraising for a great cause Year 5 student, Stirling Inder, loves animals, great and small, and has decided that it would be a great idea to raise some funds for the RSPCA through the RSPCA Cupcake Day. Stirling and his family are going to make delicious cupcakes that will be sold at school on Thursday 22

nd August.

The cupcakes can be purchased at recess and lunch for the low price of 50 cents per cake with all proceeds going to the RSPCA to assist in caring for animals in need.

For those of you who cannot make it to the cupcake stall you may still donate to this worthy cause by visiting https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au/f/stirlinginder

th August and runs

through until Friday 23rd

This year students will be exploring amazing books, especially the many new additions to the newly refurbished school library, joining in activities at the local community library, experiencing countless stimulating activities in every classroom and concluding with the AMAZING Book Week Parade where every student in the school is asked to come dressed as their favourite character from their favourite book. The theme for our celebrations this year is “Reading is my Secret Power” and we hope this theme inspires your imagination to create costumes for the parade on Thursday 22

nd August (change

of date) at 10.15am in the school hall.

Yours in reading and love of books, Miss Kemp, Mrs Graham and Mr Harrop

Waste Free Wednesday Waste Free Wednesday statistics continues to improve across the school with steady reduction in landfill rubbish in all classrooms. A major reduction from Kookaburra, Koala and Platypus has been pleasing and it’s exciting to see. Well done to all parents, carers and students on such an amazing effort. Let’s see if we can be a complete Waste Free School for a day before the end of term.

Enrolling Now For 2020

If you know of families who will have children starting school at Crookwell Public in 2020 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Form promptly. This will

allow staffing arrangements for next year to be firmly in place by the commencement of the new academic year.

Families new to the school community are invited to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an interview with Mr Whittington, meet the staff, tour the school and receive a Crookwell Public School Information package.

Thank you to the families who have already completed and submitted their child’s application to enrol.

Mufti Day – Sam McGregor Thank you to everyone who supported Mufti Day on Thursday to assist Sam McGregor to attend the national hockey titles in Bendigo next week. We wish Sam and his fellow NSW team mates the very best of luck! We truly are lucky to be part of the CPS community!

K-2 Excursion to Canberra Theatre 06/09/2019 On Friday 6

th September 2019, students in Kindergarten,

Year 1 and Year 2 will be travelling to Canberra Theatre to

watch the live production of ‘Possum Magic’. For more

than 30 years, Mem Fox’s Possum Magic has captivated and enchanted young people all over Australia.

Students will be leaving school at approximately 9:30am and returning to school by 4pm. This will not be in time for

students to catch the bus home, alternate arrangements need to be organised to collect students from the school at 4pm. Children will need to bring a packed recess and lunch in separate plastic bags clearly labelled with their names.

Disposable drink containers are a handy idea on this excursion. We will be eating our packed lunch at Commonwealth Park at Lake Burley Griffin.

The total cost of this excursion is $50.00 per child. This includes the theatre ticket and bus fare. To assist parents in making the payment for this excursion, a payment plan has been set up:

There are 9 tickets left. We are opening these tickets up to any Year 3 or 4 students who would like to come along and see the show. It will be ‘first in, best dressed’. The next nine Year 3 or 4 students who return the permission note along with $50 to the office will be attending the show!

If there are any questions relating to this excursion please feel free to contact the school or come and talk to one of the K-2 staff members.

Many thanks, K-2 Teachers - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

In a series of sketches, professional actor/educators use student suggestions to create uniquely hilarious scenes that educate on the moon and space science. Students will be travelling to the high school by bus, departing Crookwell Public at 9:15am sharp and returning in time for recess. There will be no cost for this excursion.

Welcome back to the Willis family! Betsy, George and Charles, along with mum, Billie, and dad Adrian, have returned home and to school this week from an amazing time travelling around Italy. We were very excited to have them back at school to hear all about their wonderful time overseas.

Mrs Willis got straight back into the thick of things in the front office while Betsy, George and Charles have been busy sharing their stories with their class mates.

P&C News Fathers’ Day Stall As we move through Term 3, we are getting closer to Fathers’ Day, and an opportunity for you to help the Crookwell Public School P&C raise some funds for our school. If you are available to lend a helping hand at the Father's Day stall on Friday 30th August, please complete and return the slip below. We would really appreciate your time!

We are also looking for more volunteers to help in the canteen. Are you able to volunteer in the canteen for one day a term, or know someone who could? Please fill out the slip below and we will get in touch! It is a great way to meet other CPS community members and your kids would love to see you at school for the day!

Students will also be doing their artworks later this term as part of the annual Crazy Camel fundraiser. Keep a look out in the News & Views late this term for your opportunity to get some special Christmas presents for your loved ones, featuring your child's artwork.

Thanks in advance for your support!
