Common Misconceptions
Textiles is just sewing and knitting!
We pride ourselves on having a cross department GCSE so whether you want to use sewing machines, 3D printers, laser cutters or vacuum formers the whole department is available to you when it come making your final product.
I can’t draw so I can’t do Tech!
You can!!! D&T is all about communicating your ideas. We will teach you some drawing skills but you can also use ICT and modelling to show your design ideas. You aren’t marked on perfect drawings –just how well you can show your ideas.
I don’t want to work with just fabric!
You don’t have to!! In the past we have had products made from plastics, wood, textiles, metals and paper. You could also include programmable electronics within your design. Don’t forget this isn’t just a textiles GCSE it is a D&T GCSE so using multiple types of materials is encouraged.
It’s too much coursework!
You do need to keep up with deadlines but you can complete tasks in lessons and most students only stay after school because they are enjoying their projects.
