The Nature of GodOmnipotent- all powerful

Benevolent- all loving Omniscient- all knowing

Just- fairChristians believe in only ONE

God who exists in three forms-The Trinity

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit

How can Christians believe in a just, loving, powerful God who

allows suffering?

Creation of the EarthGenesis 1 describes the creation

of the earth in six days, with God resting on the seventh

John 1 mysteriously describes how the Logos (the Word)

creates the universe. The Logos is believed to be Jesus.

What are the similarities and differences between Genesis 1

and John 1?Might some people not believe

Genesis 1 is literally true?

Immortality (life after death)Christians believe they will be

judged on their actions and their belief (works and faith).

After death, their bodies will be resurrected when Jesus

returns. They will be judged by God, as described in the last book of

the Bible (Revelation).

What does the Parable of the Sheep and Goats say about the

afterlife? What are heaven and hell like?

The Incarnation Christians believe Jesus is God in human

form.Christians believe Jesus is 100% human and

100% God. He was born as a seemingly ordinary baby with an extraordinary

purpose- to save the world from their sins. His mother Mary was a virgin and she was

made pregnant by the Holy Spirit. How does the belief in the

incarnation affect Christians? What evidence in the Bible is there

that Jesus is God in human form?

Jesus’ CrucifixionChristians believe Jesus’ death on a cross 2000 years ago

is a historical event which saves them from sin and death. Jesus was killed for blasphemy (claiming he was the Son of God) and because the rulers believed he was a threat.

Jesus’ Resurrection3 days after his death

Jesus comes back to life

Demonstrates God’s power over death

Confirms Jesus was truly God as only God has power over death

Christians have hope that they too will one day resurrect from

the dead.

Different Christian GroupsChristians can be split into three main denominations:

Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant. All Christians can be split into liberal (open to

new interpretations) and fundamental (believe the Bible

literally). What are the main similarities

differences between the denominations?

Jesus’ Ascension 40 days after his resurrection,

Jesus ascended to heaven, in front of his disciples.

Jesus encouraged his disciples to continue to spread the good news

about him, baptise people and make more disciples.

Why is it important for Christians that Jesus ascended to heaven and

is now there, not earth?

Worship Worship is giving thanks and

praise to God.Private: Private prayers, hymns, meditation, reading the Bible etc.

Liturgical: Using set words and actions e.g. The Eucharist, Roman

Catholic Mass.Non-liturgical: worshipping more

spontaneously and informallywithout set words e.g. Baptist or

Quaker services.

List the advantages and disadvantages of each type of worship.

PrayerCommunicating with God can be

done in various ways....Set prayer: prayers with set words, written the Church or

from the Bible (e.g. The Lord’s Prayer= Our Father).

Extempore prayer: free-form prayers which are made up by

the one praying.Private prayer: prayers said

alone, not out loud.

List the advantages and disadvantages of each type of prayer?

BaptismSince Jesus himself was

baptised, Christians take part in baptism in different ways.

Infant baptism: Roman Catholics, Orthodox and some

Protestants baptise babiesAdult or believer’s baptism: Some Protestants (such as

Baptists) baptise teenagers and adults.

What is the meaning behind baptism? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type?

The Eucharist/ Holy Communion (bread and wine) Most Christians remember Jesus’ last supper, where he broke bread and drank wine with his disciples,

the night before his death. It represents Jesus’ sacrifice which Christians believe they are saved by. Roman Catholics: during Mass, the priest takes bread (a wafer) and wine. He blesses it and for Catholics,

it becomes the literal body and blood of Jesus. Catholics usually bow before it and take it on their tongue.Orthodox: during the ‘Divine Liturgy’, the priest takes a loaf of bread baked by someone from the Church

and cuts it into two. One portion is blessed and becomes Jesus’ body and is soaked in the wine (his blood). Only Orthodox Christians take this bread, given to them on a spoon, by the priest. The other

bread is taken home and can be given to non-Orthodox Christians. Protestants: some Protestants take the communion in a very similar way to Catholics but some take it

completely differently. Most believe the bread and wine are a symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice, not literally flesh and blood. Sometimes the bread is a normal loaf passed around with singing and music. Methodists may

drink non-alcoholic wine.

ChristmasMost Christians, apart from

Jehovah’s Witnesses, celebrate Christmas (Jesus’ birth) in many

ways including:Nativity plays

Midnight massLighting candles

Creating ChristinglesGiving gifts

What is the religious importance of Christmas celebrations above?Has Christmas lost its meaning?

PilgrimageLourdes

After a young girl called Bernadette saw visions of the Virgin Mary in a small town in Southern France, millions of pilgrims flock to Lourdes in

search of a miracle.

IonaA remote island in Scotland

where Christians go for peace, prayer and reflection. What is the importance of

pilgrimage to Christians?

EasterChristians celebrate Jesus’ resurrection in many ways:Lighting the Paschal candle

Giving Easter eggsEaster vigil (Orthodox)

Joyful service on Easter morning

Do Easter eggs have any real religious importance?

What is more important to Christians- Easter or Christmas? Meaning of Easter celebrations?
