IIM Kozhikode

Here is my GD PI experience of IIMK held on 5th Feb. at Bangalore. GD: GD was about news clipping about ‘ASSOCHAM proposing a consumer protectionagency to deal with unfair business practices like false advertisements’. It was about4-5 lines in length. And the group was 10 in strength. It was a pleasant GD withevery one getting to speak.

My ContributionI spoke about the need to define what fake/false adv mean since a fake ad for adetergent is not as dangerous as it is for a pharma/drug ad.

Need to ascertain the other industry representations like FICCI / CII on this topic.Taking back ads might mean loss of revenue so the ad industry’s view should be

taken care of. How willing is the government on this proposal. If at all such a bodycomes up we should look at seamlessly integrate it with existing consumer laws.

Points by others Having such a body with representatives from Govt, Ad industrypeople, consumers etc. Different criteria for diff sectors like detergents and drugs.

And some of my points were not picked up when I put them but later some one elsecame up with the same point like my point about other industry representatives likeFICCI/ CII.

PI: Q. Please tell us about yourself. My Answer: I told them I’m with CTS hyd. In Hyd I stay with my parents. Told themmy father is working with NMDC, mother home maker and sister doing her enggfrom hyd. I told them that all my education was from hyd right from schooling. WhileI was in school I was actively involved with AP theatre and was also a child delegateto the international film festival at Hyd. Now I spend my leisure reading news ingeneral and take particular interest in AP politics. I also like to post my views onsociopolitical issues through blogs.

My Answer: As of now the effort to contain environmental damage is veryfragmented particularly with the US not participating. So I don’t think green housegas emission would be used as an entry barrier anytime soon.

Q. Are you aware of the latest developments on the patents issue in India ?My Answer: I said, I’m not fully aware of the whole developments but I have readabout GIs (geographical Indicators) helping SMEs who cannot file and fight patentsall over the world. I also told them that I read in today’s paper about the issue of Darjeeling Tea and how India won the case in the US . Also spoke about PochampallySarees- Only those which are produced in Pochampally can be called PochampallySarees and in that way help small enterprises who depend on those sarees for theirlivelihood. And GIs help SME fight MNCs who can spend large sums on patents.

Q. What is hashing? My Answer: Hashing is a technique used for easy storage and retrieval of data. Itsdone using key value pairs. And each value could lead to a bucket of values. So thenumber of read and write to the hard disk is reduced. Also explained him with asmall example.

Q. What is the least possible cost for searching a minimum number from a given setof numbers? My Answer: It is n*log (n) and can be achieved using selection sort.

Q. Can you explain how the answer to the previous question is n*log (n)?

MY Answer: Consider there are n elements and let them be equal to 2^m. Now inbinary search the maximum traversal would be the depth of the tree which is mhence it is log(n). And for all elements it is n*log(n). < At this point he disagreedand said it is not that way and then he said it was Ok and asked me to leave thequestion since I could not answer it.>

Q. Can you explain what NP hard and NP complete problems are?My Answer: I don’t remember that sir. Panelist asked-But you had it in yourcurriculum right? I said ‘yes sir we had, but I don’t remember now’.

Q. In how many ways can you arrange n indistinguishable balls into 2 slots? My Answer: It is (n-1)C1. That is n-1. He nodded and came out with another way of approach to the solution.

Q. What are the latest developments on the child labour front? My Answer: All children under 14 should have compulsory education. And I said I’mnot aware of further developments. < Later I remembered that I could have talkedabout even domestic help being made illegal, but that was after I finished the PI,Also I’m worried about this since I mentioned in the data form that I like to blogabout sociopolitical issues>

I mentioned that I’m currently reading ‘Interpreter of Maladies’ by Jhumpa Lahiri. And my favourite book is ‘Lajja’ by Taslima Nasreen. Ialso explained why it is so. IIMK GDPI experience

GD {2-3 mts to think, 12-15 mts to discuss : A panel of 2 members} There were just 12 people in all at my scheduled time who were split into 2 groups of 6 peopleeach. The GD topic was a small paper cutting titled "Capitalism the only solution topoverty - Narayanamurthy". The group was very calm and everybody had ampletime to make his/her point. I made my first entry 3rd or 4th and made reentries 4-5times. We were concentrating on development of agriculture as it was the area whichemployed the largest section of the population. I made statements like "US farmersget around 80% subsidy for their total cost of production" {Later in the interview Ihad questions about the source of my information}. One guy started coming up withthe necessity of a good education policy and another taking it up. My point was thatwith increasing levels of education, we need to open up our economy so that peopleget more opportunities {I quoted the case of Kerala where increasing literacy rate isoffset by increasing unemployment}. We had people talking about the necessity of bringing in more technology into the farmland and better storage facilities. On guysaid that if the size of the farmland is large, then it is possible for farmers to dooperations like spraying pesticides easier { He quoted the case of America wherespraying of pesticides is carried out using helicopters}. One guy tried to put in thecase of Singur which was supported by another guy taking up the case of Nandigram. But the thing is that it ended with that, nobody taking it up further. Then

the discussion was about India's liberalization in 90's step towards capitalism or notand stuff like that. There was no summary. We stopped when we were asked to.

Interview

1.I was asked to name a few personalities with the same first name and surname. Then I was asked in which part of the world is the surname "Gomez" common.

2.Self introduction --- lasted around a minute. As I listed down my achievements like

Name the point where the rate of slope changesit's sign. How will you find out whether the sign change is from +ve to -ve or -ve to+ve ?

3.Questions on GD points Why did you describe farming as labour intensive? Whichall stages of crop cultivation can you mechanize ? What are the disadvantages of mechanizing Indian agriculture? From where did you get the information onsubsidies? Can you name an international organization whose talks failed due to thisissue? Where was the talk held? What were the reasons for it's failure?

4.Hobbies ? {Listening to music, stamp collection and coin collection ---- the secondmember in the panel was a philatelist !} Most prized stamp collection? Hardeststamp to acquire? The GD had 10 people on a panel. The topic was related to agriculture reforms. It was a four / five sentence paragraph about how 70% of the population is occupiedin agri but the produce is decreasing, farmers are committing suicide in increasingnumbers. We were supposed to write our points on that paper itself (one on whichthe topic was printed) and had to leave it where we sat. The order in which we satwas assigned by them. It was a reasonably civilised GD and everyone spoke at leasttwice or thrice. To judge my performance, another person and I were the ones whospoke the most but there wasn't too much of a difference from the others. Thepreparation time given was around 5 mins and the GD went on for around 10-15mins.

The interview started for most of us with questions related to the GD-whether therewas anything more we wanted to say and so on. I was asked to give points that icouldn’t make during the GD. I mentioned a few and then they quizzed me more onthat. One point was that about the Grameen bank concept of Mohammed Yunus. They asked me what i knew about it and I was able to give a very basic conceptidea. When they asked me more about the type that has been implemented inBangladesh, I had to say that I didn't know the concept in that much detail. Theyseemed satisfied. Then they went onto my form and asked things from that. Firstthey asked why my marks are showing steady decline(from 87% in first year to 81

now). I explained that the marks as such don’t mean much. My relative standing inclass is around the same. In first year, I was 3rd or 4th in class and now I'm 7th.They still pointed out that that is a decline. I said that it is still a good position in aclass of 100. I also mentioned that when I had 87 in 1st yr, the univ topper had 93and when I have 81 now, the topper has 87. So, it’s just a question of it being moredifficult to score marks as the seems go on. They weren't impressed with the answer. They said that it shows that when everyone's marks go down, so do mine. I politelydisagreed and tried to establish that I'm a steady performer. I'm not sure whether itworked. This was the only difficult part of the interview. I was then asked to explaina couple of graphs (one was a rectangular hyperbole, the other a straight line withnegative slope). I was able to do that satisfactorily (explained the slope, stabilityetc). Then they asked me about another graph, what a point in it was called. I gavean explanation to it, but I didn't know the exact term. They didn't pursue the matterbut said that as an engineering student, I should've been able to answer it.

They also asked a few economic terms- price elasticity, law of demand, what areAdam Smith's books etc. While I didn’t know the first one, I answered the other two.I had also mentioned in my form that I'm interested in civil services. They quizzedme a while on that but I was able to give good answers for everything since myfather was an IAS officer. I could quote examples from his experiences. Towards theend, they asked me about my hobbies, which is my favorite etc. I said it was poetrywriting. They asked me about my latest one and I read them a few stanzas (I hadtaken a copy along). One of the panelists looked impressed while the others seemeddisinterested. I'm not sure what that means. But all together the feeling of the

interview was good. They seemed pleased with me overall and smiled occasionally.Whenever they liked my answers, they nodded in agreement and so on.

GD:

It was a small four lined snippet regarding coruption. Its gist is as below:

President APJ Abdul Kalam is against corruption. He came out with a three pronged strategy to fight and prevent corruption. The 3 prongs being (a) Implementation of stringent laws (b) prevention of corruption (c) Educating people.

Group size: 10 (1 didn't turn up so effectively 9)

GD nature: It was a fishmarket. though the decibel levels are not so high as the onesin the fishmarket GDs in our classrooms, the behaviour i.e. cross talk, lack of structure, haste to put across points, the haste to start off the GD were very wellevident.

My Points:

1. Corruption: not being responsible and not imparting duty righteously because of some vested interests.

2. Lack of proper survellience is one reason why the corruption is thriving.

3. Someone said that low remuneration is one of the reasons for corruption and toaddress this the compensation has to

be raised. Addressing this point I said, "Though it is true to some extent, practically we have a cap above which we cannot increase.Keeping this in view I think weshould try to imbibe the sense of responsibility and morality among people."

4. The groupd started discussing about education and the discussion centered onschools and primary education. Idefined Education and gave a broader perspective. I said, "Education is not just academics. Telling alayman or an illiterate about a process or way in which he can report corruption, inthis situation, would beeducation." I could drive home the point that the word education bears the meaning"awareness" in thiscontext and it is not confined to schooling or acads

nothing like this as far as I know. Canyou quote me a reference from the vedas that says the Advaita was there since along time?I: (looked down for a while as if thinking) Sir I will quote a verse from theChandogya Upanishad that estabilishes this

P2: Wait!! You are quoting the Unanishads, they are not the part of the veda.I: Sir the Upanishads are a part of the veda. They come at the end of the vedas andhence called vedanta.

P2: (Nodding his head in affirmative) I don't think so----By this time i realised the quotation point is gone to the windI: Sir as you have said, the prayers which are called the Upasanas come in the first, then the mantras for performingsacrifices (though I didn't tell him the term, these are called brahmanas) and the endcome the Upanishads (thoughI didn't tell him the term, these are called aranyakas)

P2: Ok. Prashant you have done Master's already, then why do you want to put in 2more years for another Master'sI: (very convoluted way of asking why MBA eh????) Sir I did Master's inMathematics. The content covered in thisMaster's degree is far different from that that will be covered as a part of mymanagement programme. (Then I

explained why I want to do management, an answer that i pondered and framed wellbefore going to the interview)

P2: ok. Prashant you are a philosopher, then why do you want to get into all this?being generalised and .. You see it's amaterialistic pursuitI: (I had an answer for this. Without this I couldn't have afforded to say that I'minterested in philosophy) Sir...(before Icould complete, he jumped to the below question, good for me :) )

P2: Why don't you specialise in a field? (This was a question that the "Why MBA?"answer lead to. Though the answerwas there in the answer to the previous question, he still asked me. He was carefulenough not to mention MS orPhD)I: Sir, specialisation in an area is also an equally challenging area and I people do gofor it. But which path exactly tochoose is upto their preferences and interests. Some try to specialise while some tryto be generalise.

P2: So you want to be generalised (something he said I don't remember) (smile)I: Yes Sir(smile)

P2: right so define the term immemorialI: (smile, how do i veer him away from this stupid question?) Sir, the definition isanalogous to the definition of infinity inMathematics.

P2: (smile) ok okI: (smile)--Now P1 woke up from slumber

P1: You did Master's in Mathematics? Tell me some course that you didI: Sir, my course included pure mathematics. I did Algebra, Introduction to topology, intro to functional analysis, intro toreal analysis.

P1: What do you mean by topology?I: Sir it's the study of nearness of objects. The study of the organisation of objects. For example the mountains on theearths crust, we call that geographic topology. For example the table that we havehere, the papres are ther, thepaper weight is here, this organization on the table is also topology.

will not have a very high motivationto manufacture more goods. They will try to reduce the productivity and for this theymay layoff people. The rawmaterials that they consume to make the goods also decreases and so they won'tbuy the same quantity of rawmaterial they used to. Because of this the supplier of the raw materials will have aproblem and his sales go down. This way a chain is triggered off.

P1: Right. what in the case of inflation?I: Sir in the case of inflation, common man is the main entity that gets affected.

P1: No no why do you discuss about the common man, Discuss the industrial aspectI: Sir. There are 2 things, Inflation and Deflation. Each one has a consumer's aspectand industrial aspect associatedwith it.

P1: So discuss the industrial aspect for inflation. Do industries have profits if there'san inflation?I: They may have some profits sir. For example a commodity of Rs100 is made andmarked at 110. it's stored in theinventory and due to inflation, the price of it is 120 now. So there is an extra 10rupees (over 110) that is gained.

P1: Ok. Why can't the common people ask to increase their wages?I: Sir common people can ask to increase the wages, but the wages cannot bechanged at such a small time granularity. There's a lot of procedure involved in making the changes. (when will u leave me?)

P1: Ok (his mobile rang, I prayed!!)

P2: Prashant you have done your Master's in Mathematics. Can you tell me whatdistribution would you use to computethe probability of a person clearing CAT?I: Sir, each section is different in CAT . Keeping the current norms laid for CAT inmind, if there are n sections, thenp1,p2,p3,...pn will be the probabilities of clearing each section. In CAT06 we had 3sections, so the probabilitieswill be p1, p2 and p3. The total probability is p1p2p3.

P2: Right, so putting all this together what distribution will you use?I: Sir to find each of the pi's i'll use a distribution.

P2: HA HA HA HAAAA (loud guffaw) Don't you use Poisson?I: Sir, i think binomial distribution will do the work
