3 ProService - August 2006

s I take a moment to reflect on NPSC 2006, there are many diverse and encouraging feelings that dominate the memories of this

past convention. The course content was fantastic, the trade show traffic was brisk and we had over 50 exhibitors which demonstrates a tangible commit-ment to Independent Service. Mack Blakely and the entire NESDA/ISCET team did a wonderful job of keeping things organized and on schedule. As I said in my last article, THANK YOU to every exhibitor, instructor, supporter or member that participated in NPSC 2006. Without you we would cease to exist as the premiere organization for Independent Service. Normally we return from the convention, pick up where we left off, institute what we learned from the classes and look forward to the next convention. NPSC really doesn’t enter most of our thoughts un-til after the first of the year. This time I would like to do things a little differently. At this time I would like to issue a challenge to myself, every board member, every Industry Partner and every member to think “1007 in 2007.” At next year’s convention I want to see 1007 registered participants in Denver. I want NESDA to take over the Marriott and provide all involved with the most enlightening and rewarding experience that a convention could offer. Traditionally you would think of just more servicers to increase that num-ber, but open up your thoughts as to what you want to take away from one of these. Our Industry Part-ners want more business, therefore they want more servicers. Business owners want more business training so they want more business trainers signed up. Technicians want more diverse training on different brands and even different disciplines (white goods immediately comes to mind). So everyone has an idea as to what they want. The key for us, 11 months before the next one of these, is to go out and get it. Industry partners, get your mailers and start promoting it now. Business

owners, let us know what you would like to see while at the same time suggesting to other com-panies that you deal with that attending NPSC is not a nicety, but a necessity. Technicians, talk to the manufacturers you deal with who aren’t participat-ing and have them contact anyone in the NESDA office or the Membership and Marketing Commit-tee. I am told Fay Wood and Mack Blakely can be very persuasive. If everyone puts a concerted effort into, in theo-ry, “getting what they want” from the convention, this would be undeniably the NPSC that all others are measured against. I challenge everyone to help make “1007 in 2007” a reality.

Talk to you later!

THE CHALLENGE

A“As I said in my last article, THANK YOU to every exhibitor, in-structor, supporter or member that partici-pated in NPSC 2006. Without you we would cease to exist as the premiere organiza-tion for Independent Service.”

NEW VERSION OF NESDA TECHMATE NOW ONLINE The links at NESDA.com have been changed to point to a NEW version of TechMate, which has moved to http://www.nesda.com/tips. The new version contains the existing tips of the earlier version, but with improved ability to search. Based on input from our members, it’s been made easier to use and there is no longer a confusing “Go!” button. We hoped to eliminate much of the frustration members experienced in using the original version by making it more user friendly. This new version was launched and demo-ed at NPSC to those that attended the session on “Using TechMate,” and everyone seemed to like it. A major new feature will be the ability to receive credit for the tips you have added. This part is not fully operational yet, but incentives for adding tips to TechMate will be added in the near future so those that put in the most tips will receive something other than just our thanks.

The greatest single change is that you need to be sure you log out rather than just closing your browser window. This prevents non-authorized use of TechMate by non-members. If you forget to log out before exiting, and then try to log back in immediately, you may receive a “too many concurrent log-ins” error. If this happens, you will need to contact the NESDA office or wait a few hours and then try again. Your log-in info is the same as for NESDA.com Members Only and the NESDAnet online archives; if you are unable to get in using that info, please contact the NESDA office either by phone at 817/921-9061 ext. 16, or via e-mail to [email protected].

We hope you will enjoy using this new version of TechMate.

ISCET’S “CUTTING EDGE”

“C.W.” Villademoros, PhD., CET • ISCET President

ISCET President’s Message

NESDA Now Administrator of

CSC Program

NESDA took over admin-istration of the Certified Service Center program in January of this year. If you are considering applying for certification through the program, the NESDA office can assist you with any questions you may have about certification.

CSC patch availableThis good-looking patch is available to Certified Service Centers for their own use. Please contact NESDA for information

on how to order.

hen the ISCET Board met in July of 2005, the comment was made that 2006 would be a turning point for ISCET. We faced

many challenges, and at the same time, there were many opportunities in emerging technical fields as well as in emerging geographical areas. Our vision of providing value and progress has put us out in front in the academic community with the ESA (Electronic Systems Associate) pro-gram, and in the consumer electronics field with the MST (Media Systems Technician) program… and most definitely on the “Cutting Edge” of both these fields. Both of these new programs depart significant-ly from what had been considered as the “norm.” The world in which ISCET lives has changed, and will change continuously in the future. ISCET will remain alert and ready to meet all these chal-lenges. Much has been done and there is still much to do. Our accomplishments have been plentiful. Here’s a short list:

• Several classes have been conducted in the vir-tual classroom format. ISCET thanks Toshiba for the use of their equipment and network.

• ISCET Student Chapter Scholarships were intro-duced, and will continue in 2006.

• The ISCET SKILLS Scholarships were awarded again in 2006, and are planned again for 2007.

• The MST program, a joint venture between NES-DA and ISCET, will be premiered in October at the T-E-A (Texas Electronics Association) con-vention in Houston, TX, with Fred Paradis CSM, NESDA President, offering the MST prep course. Testing will also be available for those wishing to become certified as a Media Systems Technician. Fred received the 2006 ISCET Board’s Director’s Award for his service to ISCET in the MST and other areas.

• ISCET is currently producing the MST prep course that will be given, along with learning courses for both self-study and virtual classroom use.

• ISCET was asked by the Texas Electronics

Technology Chairman of the SKILLS Texas committee to take responsibility for the Corpus Christi, TX meeting that hosts state competition in electronics technology. The Associate CET exam was used. We are partnering with Dr. Steve Gibbs of the University of Texas at Arlington. ISCET will have responsibility for the electronics technology theory testing using the Associate CET examination.

• Del Whiteman CET/CSM A+ Net+, and Ed Cling-man presented “The Changing Face of Electron-ics Education” at the SKILLS National Meeting in Kansas City, Mo. and also presented at the Texas Industrial Vocational Association (TIVA), a professional association of vocational public school instructors and administrators in Corpus Christi in July 2006.

• The ESA (Electronics Systems Associate) pro-gram was promoted to 100+ schools and instruc-tors. The ESA program has been well received. ESA-2 Learning Graphics, Learning Course – by Dennis DeLaurier, (who received the 2006 ISCET President’s Award at NPSC) is now complete.

• A protocol was developed by David Bates CET to provide for an orderly progression of respon-sibility in having certifications and learning material reviewed so as to remain current with the technology.

• Documentation for Serviceability has been com-pleted by Oscar Romero CET and George Brown-yard CET, and ISCET will soon begin to execute serviceability inspections for manufacturers who see this as a way to cut their warranty costs.

• As President of ISCET, I made presentations at four local technical colleges, and participated in one job fair. Another job fair is planned for Orlando in October.

• We have initiated the program necessary to submit FCC license applications electronically. This will greatly simplify the filing procedure for the applicant and cut down on the number of rejects, allowing the members to receive their license in a more timely manner.

W“ON THE ‘CUTTING EDGE’? You bet! We are pushing forward toward the goal of making ISCET a more modern and responsive international service organization.”

Please check your listing as it ap-peared in the 2006 (current) version of the yearbook. If you can’t locate your copy, you can view the PDF in-side NESDA Members Only. The list-ing section begins on page 52. If it is correct as listed, and nothing has changed since the last printing, your listing will appear exactly that way in the 2007 yearbook. Even if you have already completed this form for updating the NESDA Locator Information, please do it again, but check the box at the top labeled “Contact Info Update Only” so we will know that it is an address, phone, or e-mail address update only. You don’t need to complete the rest of the form, and we will disre-gard the other fields. If you need to tell us anything else, please note it in the Comments field toward the bot-tom of the form.

Manufacturers, distributors and oth-er service providers, if your company has a listing in the resource listings section of the book, and you need to update your info, there is a special online form for you at http://www.nesda.com/publications/yearbook-update.

You should receive your 2007 year-book in the mail in late January or early February.

ON THE “CUTTING EDGE”? You bet! We are pushing forward toward the goal of making ISCET a more modern and responsive international ser-vice organization for all its members, ready to ad-dress the emerging multidisciplinary technological challenges, and provide our members with real value for their membership. Of course, we did not accomplish all our goals in one year, but we are working as a team to continue this effort through-out the next several years.

We welcome all contributions from volunteers to join us and make this happen. We invite all mem-bers who want to contribute to ISCET’s success to be active volunteers in any of our activities (techni-cal committees, local chapters, certification admin-istrators, conferences and workshops, publications, etc.) or in the ISCET governance. If you are not already a member of ISCET, con-sider joining today. ISCET does not exist without your contributions.

“Dave from Dependable Electric here. I just read Fred’s thank you to all the folks that went to NPSC. I felt it necessary to drop everything and sit for a minute (Okay, that minute is now at the 3-hour mark) and write a THANK YOU to Fred and ALL of the NESDA staff and family for all the hard work they put in the this NPSC. Fred is sure a friendly gent.

This was my first NPSC or any convention. I did not know what to expect. REAL world learning as well as some good informative training classes. I am VERY glad I went. Putting faces with the NESDAnet members I have talked to via e-mail was great for me, too.

THANK YOU ALL!”

-- Dave Walker, Dependable Electric, Tustin, CA

“I trust everybody had a safe trip back, just wanted to thank all who partici-pated in NPSC 2006 last week for making it a FANTASTIC event. Thank you all for your support and I look forward to another year as your President.” -- Frederic Paradis, CSM, NESDA President, Dave’s Radio and TV, Inc., Ashland, MA

“I second Fred’s opinion of NPSC!” Rich Reid CET, Video Services, Boise, ID

“My thanks and appreciation to Mack, his able staff, Fred, the board, and com-mittee members for one great NPSC. In spite of the hotel change and hotel construction I thought the convention was very well organized and ran quite smoothly.

I joined the ranks of converts last year, making this my second convention.

The cameraderie and education are well worth the effort. For me, one of the best benefits of NESDA is that I no longer operate in a vacuum.

Thanks to everyone who works and volunteers for NESDA (and it’s clear to me the staff also volunteers a lot of time as well!)”

-- Jonathan Lentz, CSM, RepairsPlus / SASCOA Electronics Company, East Providence, RI

“Gained 25 Pounds at NPSC! Did anyone else have this problem when they left the convention? Not in body weight but I probably did gain a few pounds because the food was plentiful. We gained the weight in excess luggage, all those training manuals, service literature and free giveaways. When we got to the airport the curbside ticket agent look at us as he picked up the bag and said “You are over weight.” He picked up the second bag and said, “This one too.” He showed me where the scale was and the first bag was 15 pounds over and the second was 10 pounds over. I asked him what I could do. He went inside and got me a box and my wife and I opened up both bags at curb side and starting pulling out the heavy items, stuffed the box, and also loaded up our carry-on bag. We got both bags to within 3 pounds of being over weight, and he said “That is close enough.” He also said the baggage is weighed as it travels over the conveyer belt and the heavy ones get kicked out. He wrapped the cardboard box and sent it as a 3rd piece. No extra charge. He earned his tip. Next year bring less clothes and a bigger carry-on bag. Had a great time!” -- Frank D’Alio CET/CSM, Gateway Electronics Inc., Flemington, NJ

“I had the most awesome time at the NPSC convention. The manufacturers, trade show exhibitors, moderators of the training classes, the entire NESDA and ISCET team and the convention attendees were a huge family of encourage-ment, knowledge and expertise. I was amazed at all of the attention I received each time I asked for assistance in my goal of achieving CSM, from shop owners to staff as well. To each of you who gave your time as I stopped you in the halls to ask for guidance, you are MY angels.

I am extremely grateful for the experience and look forward to being with each of you next year.”

-- Kate Jordan, CSM, Home Theater Store, Houston, TX

“I think some of the people are finally taking a step forward, visiting the board meeting or NPSC. Once you see the board members in action and understand what they do, you have a different outlook.

I still can’t see how the staff can put something together like this and have it go so smoothly.”

-- Jeff Dougherty, Intrepid TV Repair, Steelton, PA

ot “Just Another NPSC!”… that’s for sure. When circumstances intervened last year, and our New Orleans, LA plans were de-

stroyed by Katrina, it sent us searching for an al-ternate site. The Hyatt organization, parent of the Hyatt hotel which was scheduled to host NPSC 2006, answered our call for help, supplying a list of hotels that might be able to serve as our host. One of these was the Hyatt Regency San Francisco airport. We all held our breath while Mack Blakely, our Executive Director, bargained our deal. And what a deal!

It’s all over now, but the memories are great! The facilities, the food, the downright pleasure of being all together again as the NESDA/ISCET family…and make no mistake…it is a family…servicers, suppliers, manufacturers, third party administrators, appliance technicians, and many others all came to-gether to enjoy their friendships and acquaintances while learning new things in many different areas. None of the training, forums, meetings and trade show happenings can compare with the good feel-ings that old friends, often seen only once a year, experience just by seeing, talking and comparing experiences, stories and comradeship. I saw several people I hadn’t seen in a few years, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I missed the dance of the show when Mack and Carolyn Blakely “tripped the light fantastic” at the AFFINA Cocktail Party, I loved hearing about it. I’m sure each of you has a lingering memory of something that was outstand-ing to you.

The “City by the Bay” has held many fond memo-ries for me, as I have been there many times in years past. It was a welcome reminder of those times in my life.

Just another NPSC? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! It was special. All of you were special, and I sincerely hope you had a similar experience to mine.

ISCET is on the “Cutting Edge.” You have read my yack about our new ESA and MST examination programs. These are both right out there in front – leading the way for educators and servicers to be out in front doing what they do best…getting the job done!

ESA (Electronics Systems Associate) is now in a number of schools helping educators meet the gru-eling demands of today’s academia…with more to follow, and interest is climbing. The MST (Media Systems Technician) program will offer its first testing at the T-E-A (Texas Electronics Association) meeting in Houston, Texas in October. Fred Paradis CSM will offer an MST prep class, and ISCET will hold a testing session to inaugurate the program.

FCC Electronic Filing for licenses is now a reality. No longer will the examinees for FCC licenses have to wait for long periods of time before receiving their licenses…and deal with sending in numerous forms only to find that some glitch exists between them and the bureaucracy that exists in most fed-eral agencies. ISCET makes it easy…just another way the NESDA/ISCET organization is pushing forward.

“Pushing Forward” is a key concept for us today. The second pair of scholarships has been awarded for the SKILLS National Electronics Technology contest 2nd & 3rd place winners. The new ISCET Student Chapter program, talked about for the last two years will be introduced in September…it’s a doozy (look it up if you have doubts) ISCET be-lieves that there is much to be done with electron-ics in the hands of students who are energized and interested in what they do, and in what their future lives will be like…and we are trying to do it.

“The Changing Face of Electronics Education” has been presented by Del Whiteman CET/CSM A+ Net+, and myself, at both the Kansas City SKILLS National competition and the Corpus Christi, TX meeting of the TIVA (Texas Industrial Vocational Association). In this presentation the “Cutting Edge” of ISCET’s electronics education programs through the ESA and MST certifications are demonstrated to show how they answer the cry for tools to teach electronics in today’s world, and how electronics is still a very viable way to make a good living. More specialized? Yes, but this hasn’t hurt other sciences that have specialized such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc., etc. There are huge fields of electronics that are not served by ISCET or anyone else. An example of these is the cellular communications electronics, the very spe-

cialized area of traffic control electronics. These are the “Cutting Edges.” ISCET is pushing forward to serve several such areas.

Internationally, ISCET is looking for expansion. ISCET de Mexico will soon be a reality with a base in Mexico, and promotion throughout South America. Hundreds of examinations have already been given in Mexico, and interest is high in other foreign countries.

We’re on the “Cutting Edge” whatever we do. Thinking of ways to do what we do better, and more beneficially for those we serve.

Tom Arnold CET of United Radio in Syracuse, NY, was named ISCET Technician of the Year by the ISCET Board of Directors at NPSC 2006 in San Francisco.

Since Tom was not present at the awards ceremonies, the honor was conferred by ISCET Immediate Past President, Jim Fellows CET/CSM at the offices of United Radio in Syracuse, NY, where Tom has been employed since 1973.

Mr. Arnold holds degrees from Syracuse University and the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Tom started as a technician in the Audio Department, and advanced to Department Manager around 1987. Tom has also been an ISCET Journeyman CET for 16 years.

Tom is an extremely patient, caring individual, and has trained, coached and helped many new technicians advance in their ca-reers in electronics. As the Assistant Scoutmaster of the local Boy Scout Troop for 20 years, he has participated in virtually all the troops’ activities -- camping, bike treks, and many other character-building endeavors.

As a volunteer on the Planning Board for the town of Nelson, NY where he resides, Tom is the consummate “Community Citizen,” devoting many hours of volunteer service, as well as personal resources, to this effort.

ISCET congratulates Tom on his accomplishments and is very pleased to honor him with this award.

ow! What a great convention and what a great city. These were some of my thoughts on the plane ride back from the NPSC in

San Francisco. Between the association meetings, excellent training seminars, insightful trade show displays, and networking with other electronics professionals, you needed to carefully budget your time to be able to take in some of the great sights the city of San Francisco has to offer. When look-ing back at what occurred during the convention, it’s easy to see why people make the NPSC an annual event. ISCET continues to be the leader in electron-ics certification and training. Throughout the past years, ISCET has continued its expansion in a mul-titude of electronics disciplines. True to its origin, ISCET continues to provide the necessary training and certification for the consumer electronics area. While at the same time, ISCET provides training materials and certifications in basic electronics, electronic communications, telecommunications, audio, bio-medical, radar, industrial and computer electronics and more! Most recently, new train-ing materials and exams have been developed for the Electronics Systems Associate (ESA-1 through ESA-5) and the Media Systems Technician (MST) areas. So where am I going with this information? I am directing this toward anyone associated with the training of electronics technicians and those need-ing trained/certified technicians. This, of course, can be directly aimed at electronics instructors who teach in high schools, vocational/technical colleges, and private electronics schools. This information is also aimed at working electronics technicians and business owners who need a competent technical workforce. If you or your business needs techni-cal training, ISCET is there for you. If you or your business is looking at expanding into other elec-tronics opportunities, ISCET can help provide the necessary training and certification. You could also become involved with your local electronics advi-sory boards and pass this information along. In what I believe to be a major update that devel-oped during ISCET’s board meeting in San Fran-cisco, a clarification has been made regarding the requirements needed to take an ISCET Journey-man Level exam. Many people have believed that a combination of four years electronics education/work experience was required to take the exam.

This is not so. To take any Journeyman Level exam, the requirement is to first pass the Associate Level exam. Then, within four years, you can take any of the Journeyman Level exams in which you feel competent. For those of you teaching in a two-year technical school, an excellent option exists involving having your students take the Associate Level exam after the first year of basic electronics study and then take one of the Journeyman Level exams in the technical area in which the student has specialized or concentrated at the completion of the second year. This could become part of the student’s “Capstone” project or portfolio and add clout to the graduate’s resume when seeking a job in the electronics industry. For those of you teaching electronics in high school or in vocational/technical schools with less time devoted to electronics theory, the success-ful passing of the ESA-1 through ESA-5 series is equivalent to and meets the requirements of the Associate Level exam. So as you can see, ISCET provides a “seamless” series of training and certifi-cation options for aspiring electronics technicians. In recent years, much has been said about the im-portance of a technician’s “soft skills” along with obtaining essential electronics knowledge. This also includes being aware of and taking part in professional/technical organizations. ISCET gives your students an opportunity to do so by forming an ISCET Student Chapter. This fall, ISCET will kick-off a program for properly established student chapters. Included will be a new Student Chapter Competition with electronics questions posted on a monthly basis, electronics student scholarship op-portunities, and the ability to network with student chapters across the country and perhaps across the world. Details will be released in September. The NPSC in San Francisco and the recent developments at ISCET have recharged my batter-ies and I am looking forward to the new school year. Hopefully, I’ll see more instructors next year at the NPSC in Denver, Colorado.
