January 2006 NEWS Filtration Industry Analyst 4 PALL FILES PATENT SUIT AGAINST ENTEGRIS Pall Corp has reportedly filed a patent infringement action in the United States District Court for the East- ern District of New York against Entegris Inc doing business as Mykrolis Corp. Pall’s suit alleges that Mykrolis is manufacturing and selling filter products for the semiconductor market, includ- ing certain of its Quickchange ® and Waferguard ® products, that infringe on two of Pall’s patents. Both products have been on the market for 10 years and are covered by patents held by Entegris (Mykrolis). The suit seeks damages and an injunction precluding Mykrolis from selling the infringing products. Entegris has said it is con- fident that it has not violated any intellectual property rights of Pall, adding that it believes that Pall’s action is entirely without merit and that it will vigorously defend this suit. (For Pall’s quarterly report, see page 13.) PCC ACQUIRES NONWOVENS MANFACTURER GLOBETEC Precision Custom Coatings LLC (PCC), a US-based pro- ducer and supplier of non- woven and coated fabrics for industrial market applica- tions has acquired certain net assets and operations of Glo- beTec Inc, a needlepunch non-woven filtration prod- ucts manufacturer based in Maryland, USA. GlobeTec has been re- named Precision Textiles, a division of Precision Custom Coatings LLC. Terms were not disclosed. GlobeTec Inc is a manufac- turer of bleeder and breather cloths used in vacuum bag cur- ing of composites for the aero- space industry. The company also supplies a range of filtra- tion and padding products for use in racing vehicles, air and liquid filtration, bedding, med- ical products, gaskets, major appliances, steel processing, vinyl and printing. Precision Custom Coatings says that it has acquired Glo- beTec to accelerate its growth, range of offerings and produc- tion output. “Overall, the acqui- sition will increase our financial strength, further diversify our product portfolio, and accelerate our long-term growth,” said Scott Tesser, president of Preci- sion Custom Coatings. The company plans to con- vert its newly obtained produc- tion facilities from a one and one-half shift facility to a con- tinually operating 24-hour-a- day mill, which will reportedly more than triple the facility’s workforce and double its pro- duction capacity. DRESSER-RAND ACQUIRES AKER KVAERNER’S MPPT INTEREST Dresser-Rand Company has acquired Aker Kvaerner’s 50% interest in Multiphase Power and Processing Tech- nologies (MppT). Dresser- Rand now owns 100% inter- est in the venture. MppT was initially formed in 1998 as a joint venture between Dresser-Rand and Kvaerner, and connects Dresser- Rand’s experience in designing and manufacturing rotating ma- chinery with Kvaerner Process Systems’ expertise in separation technology. The focus of the joint venturewas to develop and market proprietary expanders and other equipment to separate gases and liquids and to gener- ate power from previously wast- ed energy during oil and gas production. According to Dresser- Rand president and CEO Vincent Volpe Jr, obtaining full ownership of MppT comple- ments the company’s existing technologies in the global oil and gas industries. “[The technologies involved in this enterprise] have demon- strated their effectiveness at enabling oil and gas producers to reduce the overall size of pro- duction platforms and subsea modules,” said Julian Smith, director of business develop- ment at Dresser-Rand, who will lead the separator strategic busi- ness unit for the company. This agreement between Dresser-Rand and Aker Kvaerner took effect on August 1, 2005. The terms of the sale were not disclosed. GE ENERGY PLANS TO ACQUIRE ALTAIR TECHNOLOGY GE Energy has reportedly signed a purchase agreement to acquire Altair Filter Tech- nology Group Limited, a provider of inlet filtration solutions for the power gen- eration, oil and gas and marine industries. Gresham Private Equity, a regionally based UK mid- market private equity firm, is a majority stakeholder in the business. The transaction, subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close at the beginning of Feb- ruary 2006. Based in Alton, UK and with operations in Louisville, Kentucky, Altair has a global sales force and customer base. Established in 1966, the com- pany’s technology has been installed in more than 2,000 units worldwide. GE Energy’s existing port- folio of environmental services covers a broad range of applica- tions, including gas turbine air filtration, fuel and air monitor- ing and conditioning, combus- tion control, post-combustion control construction and pollu- tant monitoring and testing. “Adding Altair’s expertise, experience and leading tech- nology will further expand our offerings in the environmental services arena,” said Dan Heintzelman, president of GE Energy's services business. “It will enhance our technology portfolio by strengthening our systems and filtration capabili- ties, giving our customers more complete pre-combustion air quality solutions.” WORLD CEMS MARKET TO EXCEED US$583 MILLION IN 2009 The market for continuous emissions monitoring sys- tems (CEMS) to measure pollutants discharged from stacks will rise to US$583 million/yr in 2009, says “Air Pollution Monitoring and Sampling World Markets”, a report supplied by the US- based McIlvaine Company. This rise is due primarily to increased activity in coal- fired power generation, the report says. This includes the construction of many new coal-fired plants in China and the US, while even countries that are strong advocates of greenhouse gas reduction, such as the UK and Germany, are also planning to build new coal-fired plants, leading to a surge in new coal-fired genera- tion across the world, McIl- vaine claims. Another big factor is reportedly the retrofitting of NOx and SO 2 control equip- ment at existing power plants in Eastern Europe, China, and the US Each of these installa- tions will require additional monitors to aid in process con- trol. While China and the US will be the biggest purchasers, many countries will also be retrofitting systems to remove NOx and SO 2 . In countries such as Chile where there are conversions back from natural gas to coal, CEMS needs will be extensive, the report claims.
