Message from the Chairman

Dear colleagues and friends,

The complexity of voice as a projection of our well-being and its ever-increasing importance as a meansof communication have inspired many scientificdevelopments in vocal science and laryngology. Physicians of various specialties are becoming moreaware of the broad nature of vocal and laryngeal complaints, a cross-cutting among medical specialties that led to a multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to

the laryngopharyngeal complex. Moreover, advances in technology, enhanced surgical skills, and increased patient’s engagement have also fostered a revamp in laryngology practice towards un-sedated office-based practice. This broad perspective in the approach to the dysphonic patients and the strategic reform in management have incentivized the organization of the Fourth Middle East Voice and Laryngology symposium, the official annual meeting of the Lebanese Voice Association.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this event. The four main themes of this year’s scientific program are; updates in diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, controversies in the management of early glottic carcinoma, the echo of gravity on body and voice with emphasis on voice lift, and last but not least, the approach to laryngeal movement disorders. We are very fortunate to have with us locally and internationally renowned guest speakers in various medical fields including laryngology; they will be sharing their expertise and distinguished knowledge.

The scientific program will also offer a pedestal for residents, investigators andphysicians to present their research projects and benefit from “The Robert T. Sataloff Award” for the best scientific research project in the field of laryngology and voice. “The Robert T. Sataloff Award” for young investigators has been established in 2017 in recognition of Dr. Robert T. Sataloff distinguished contribution to the field of voice science and laryngology and to his inspiration as an educator and researcher to many generations and colleagues.

Please join us in this exceptional yearly event in the realm of an exceptional city, Beirut. We look forward to your presence and active contribution.

Message from President of the American College of Surgeons, Lebanon Chapter

Dear colleagues and friends,

The Lebanon Chapter of the American College of Surgeons continues to promote the art and science of Surgery in Lebanon. Our annual meetings aim to gather surgeons of various specialties in a multifaceted scientific day to present short topics of mutual interest. This year we joined with the Lebanese Voice Society to present a very diversified program that focuses on changes and diseases

occurring with aging on the larynx, voice and face. The presentations are focused and short but will enable to attendees to learn about the latest developments in the subjects. The speakers have diversified background and experiences which will help to shape the learning experience and strengthen the ties among different surgeons and physicians in Lebanon. This aspect is at the heart of the College’s mission. I would like to encourage all of our college fellows and attendees alike to invite their colleagues and residents to be part of this scientific activity. I am looking forward to seeing you all and wish you a very successful conference.

Sincerely,

Ahmad Zaatari, MDPresident of the American College of Surgeons, Lebanon Chapter

Message from the LVA President

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are announcing with great honor and pleasure our 4th Middle East Voice and Laryngology Symposium that will be held on the 6th and 7th of April, 2019. This yearly scientific activity has been organized by the Lebanese Voice Association in collaboration with the American College of Surgeons – Lebanon Chapter – and the Association Libanaise des Orthophonistes (ALO).

The 4th Middle East Voice and Laryngology Symposium will be tackling reform in laryngology practice and will be including an updated and effective insight into the latest surgical and non-surgical approaches in the management of laryngeal diseases and vocal disorders. The comprehensive program of this year Symposium held by the dynamic and hard-working organizing committee comprises four Medical sessions covering the most current themes: ‘Dysphagia – Update in Diagnosis and Management’, ‘Early Glottic Cancer; The current stance’, ‘The Echo of Gravity; Body and Voice’ and ‘Laryngeal Movement Disorders’.

The symposium will also provide residents and young researchers the opportunity to present research projects in the field of Laryngology and Voice with the purpose of winning the ‘Robert T. Sataloff’ Award” granted to the best scientific research study.

Last but not least, we’d like to extend a very warm welcome to all participants including our distinguished scholars of national and international reputation for joining such a remarkable event to share their expertise with leading edge knowledge encompassing a broad spectrum in the Laryngology/Voice field. Beirut – The vibrant, diverse and friendly city of the Lebanon – is expecting you.

We’re looking forward to the key elements to a successful meeting, your substantial presence and your active contribution.

Yours sincerely,

Message from the President of ALO

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is a great pleasure to meet around The Fourth Middle East Voice & Laryngology Symposium. This year’s version successfully manages to gather a panel of international and local experts, with one goal in mind: scientific development. The Lebanese Speech-Language Association ALO is thankful once again for the positive collaboration with the Lebanese Voice Association, and The American College of Surgeons – Lebanon Chapter. It’s a reminder for us that working hand in hand can’t be but fruitful.

This year’s symposium is structured around 4 main themes. And we are so happy to see dysphagia joining the other voice-related topics: early glottic cancer, the ageing voice, and the laryngeal movement disorders. As usual, through focusing on the interdisciplinary input in the diagnosis and treatment, we promise to present to you a space for reflection and learning, lead by our speakers and enriched by the participation of every specialist and student.

The presence of a voice therapist in every session will offer us an updated review on the latest findings in research, and provide us with a closer look on the best practices in Lebanon and around the world, our intervention being an inseparable element in the holistic case management.

And to extend the learning process, we are offering a specialized workshop “Dysphagia: Diagnosis and Treatment”. We hope it will allow our specialists to better detect, analyze, evaluate, and plan rehabilitation, and open the discussion for the professional challenges and achievements across the different structures of work.

Allow me in this occasion, to thank ALO’s active Voice Committee, and all its members. The efforts you put in the preparation phase, allowed us to reach today’s plan. And to every voice therapist speaker, from Luxembourg and Lebanon, for the enriching share of knowledge you had the generosity to make. And last but not least, to our friends, colleagues and collaborators, for working together towards the same goal.

Good luck to all of us, turning this symposium into a successful and positive space. May our concerns in the development of voice rehabilitation be met in the different discussions.

Sincerely,

Tarek FÉGHALISpeech-Language TherapistPresident of the Lebanese Speech-Language Association
