Four Parameters

The quality of a gemstone is graded principally upon the following fourparameters Cut, color, clarity and carat. Hence, these are the key criteria’swhich are meticulously evaluated in order to grade a gemstone. Thus, wewill discuss below all four essential factors in detail below.

6

Parameters- Color

Color: The value of a gemstone primarily depends upon its colorcharacteristics. In the context of colors, there are three primary colorsred, green, blue and three secondary colors (purple, orange and green). These colors are mixed proportionally to obtain new colors. Usually, thecolors which are visible to us are mixture of these primary andsecondary colors. Apart from this, Saturation, Hue and tone of the colorsalso hold quite an importance while grading a gemstone.

Saturation: It means the colorfulness of a color relative to its ownbrightness. The saturation of a color will be decided by a combination oflight intensity and how much it is distributed across the spectrum ofdifferent wavelengths. The purest color is obtained when a singlewavelength passes through the spectrum of light assist in obtaining ahigh quality or graded gemstone. However, if the intensity of thewavelength decreases, so as the saturation decreases, consequently, thegrade of the gemstone also been affected.

However, it is impossible to obtain a 100 percent Saturation in nature, but higher the saturation, consequently, the price of a gemstone will behigher.

Hue: Hue of a color is described to be the pure color without any

7

inclusion and tint. In addition to this, it generally means that how ourbrain perceives specific colors red, green and blue. The different huesare considered to have different wavelength in the spectrum.. The red, green, purple, blues are defined to have perfect hue. However, the hue ofa color changes according to fashion. So, the gemstones which reflectsrich amount of color such as red, green, purple and blue are regarded ashigh graded color gemstones.

Tint: When a color is added with white that is being called tint. It hasbeen said occasionally about tint that lesser the tint betters the hue ofthe stone and lesser the saturation. So, a gemstone with fewer tints isregarded to be high color graded gemstone.

Grading of a color: color grading in the context of the gemstones, meansthat what is the strength of the main color persist in a gemstone? Forexample, if it is a blue sapphire stone, so while evaluating this gemstonespecifically on the color grading parameter. It is being evaluated that inwhat quantity the blue color persist in the stone. Fortunately, if thequantity of blue color is 100 percent in the stone, it will be regarded asthe natural blue sapphire stone. However, it is almost impossible to spota gemstone without any inclusion. Nonetheless, in that case a stone withlesser number of inclusions being confirmed the high quality gemstone.

8

Parameters - Clarity

Clarity: After color the other parameter which holds paramountimportance while grading a gemstone is considered to be the clarity ofthe stone. More precise definition of clarity is that a gemstone withoutany inclusions or with “few inclusions” “large inclusions”. However, inorder to perceive the more accurate and precise results generally thegemstones are categorized in the following categories on the basis ofnumber of inclusions.

FL: These gemstones are completely internally flawless and free of anyinclusions. Even, under the 10 X magnifier no as such inclusion can bespotted.

VVS: It stands for (very very less) inclusions. It is a cumbersome task tospot a flaw in vvs gemstones as these are completely flawlessgemstones. However, in order to find any inclusion in the stone, 10 mxmagnifier is used which barely reflects any flaws.

Vs Inclusion: These stones contain slight inclusions which can be caughtby under the 10x magnifier or by competent gemstone experts.

SI: It stands for slightly included inclusions in the stone which can bemeasured with an experienced pair of eyes or under the magnifier. However, in comparison to VVS, VS, the stone which lies under thiscategory are slightly low in quality.

9

I1: These gemstones are highly influenced with external inclusion andquantity of the inclusions are such high so that it can be spotted withbare eyes.

Transparent: The stone which possess the quality of transmitting thelight through it without any diffusion or bare infusions are regarded to bethe transparent gemstone.

Translucent: Hence, the stone allows passing the light through it.However, the stone is not revered as “transparent”.

Opaque: the gemstone which does not let the light to travel or passthrough it.

10

Parameters - Cut

Cut: A gemstone is extracted from the mines or from deep forests thus, they appear dull and asymmetric. However, in order to use thesegemstones for jewelry purposes. These gemstones are introduced to cutinto different shapes considering in mind the inclusions in the stone. Arough gemstone is needed to cut because the stone which are extractedfrom mines are immensely large in size. So, the process to make agemstone assume a certain shape, size, bringing out its luster and shineand enabling the stone to be embedded in jewelry the whole process willbe aggregate called cutting of a gemstone.

However, cutting a gemstone is quite different from cutting a diamond. While cutting a gemstone, it should not be cut generally in uniformshape because a gemstone possesses certain inclusions and propertieswhich should be maintained while cutting a gemstone. Thus, a gemstoneis cut in such an ideal manner so that it possesses its original qualitiesand exhibits its original color, an acceptable number of inclusions and itsscintillating brilliance.

Typically, the gemstones are cut in two ways, either in faceted gems(gems with geometrically shaped flat polished faces) and non-facetedgems (those gem that do not have geometrically shaped flat polishedfaces such as Cabochons). A rough gemstone is authorized to be cut bythe gemstone cutter with minimum two years of experience.

However, nobody inreality knows about who is the real inventor of this cut. Although, this cutis extremely famous because it essays 57 faceted. The diamond chieflyperceives the round brilliant cut treatment. Usually, the benefits of theround cut are that it uniformly divides the facets of the stone and alsoenhances luster and shine of the gemstones. However, earlier this cutwas not only practiced on diamonds, but nowadays gemstones areobtaining this treatment.

Baguette Cut: Baguette cut gemstones have 20 faceted. This cut has beenexercised upon rough gemstones, especially for Tourmaline.

Square Cut: Square cut stone has at least 57 facets. Basically, this stonehas to be cut in step by step procedure to achieve a perfect square cutstone. So these are the main types of cut which a gemstone can perceive. However, apart from this there are other cuts which can be exercisedupon the gemstones like: Concave cut, Millennium cut, Cabochon cut,Buff cut, Briolette cut.

Parameters - Carat

Carat: Except cut. Color, clarity, the other extremely important parameterwhich we do need to consider while grading a gemstone is carat. Carat issupposed as a unit of mass which is used in measuring gemstones. Itwas found that the unit carat come in existence around1920.Additionally; one carat is equal to 200 mg. Apart from otheressential parameters the weight of the stone also holds paramountimportance while grading a gemstone. The weight of the gemstone alsomakes an impact over the price of the gemstone. Hence, as the carat ofstone increases in same proportion the price of the stone will alsoincrease.

Apparently, a rough gemstone carries much weight which need to bescaled down by eliminating the redundant materials persisting inside thestone for example: separating inclusions from a stone. As a result of this, the size of the stone and the appearance of the stone enhancesbrilliantly. Instead of this, it is not mandatory to purchase a high caratstone. Although, you are advised to purchase a gemstone by keeping inmind your budget, since due to the advancement in technology, nowadays, a gemstone with lesser in carat even appears elegant andsuppose to bestow all the benefits which a person seek from agemstone.
