WHAT IS A STEREOTYPE?
Stereotype: “a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group”
Gender stereotypes are used to represent gender, status, and social identity.
WHERE IS GENDER STEREOTYPING TYPICALLY SEEN? • Magazines, newspapers, any form of public media literature
• Toys, books, clothing, accessories, aimed at children
• Books, clothing, accessories aimed at teens
• Films
• Music
• Video Games
WHY VIDEO GAMES?
Why are video games a big target?
AND WHY TEENS!?
Because the video game industry is one of the top grossing, making
more money than music and film.
And why teens? Because adolescents are mostly the target audience and the consumers of video games.
It is a mixed medium, advertised on buses, billboards, TV ads, it has imagery, symbols, involves
literature, spoken words, and body language.
