Merchant Seamen were seafarers on merchant vessels—ships that transport cargo or passengers

6. James Innes Reid, son of Alexander Innes (Master Merchant Seaman) and Helen Reid was born about 1836/1838 in Banffshire, Scotland.63 Information about his birth was based on the 1841 enumeration with his parents in Gamrie Parish, Banffshire.64

James was definite about two things: his identity and seamanship.

(1) James persistently recorded his father in vital statistics as Alexander Reid, except in his uncontrollable 1841 enumeration at age 3. After 1851 he eventually used his mother’s maiden name as his surname identity, never conforming to conventional usage of surname practices or patronymics. This is what James obviously wanted, although his personal reasons are unknown. His father’s surname Innes became a middle or unhyphened surname. So James became—James Innes Reid. Nevertheless:

(c1836) on microfilm FHL 990994 from Family History Library on 26 June and 24 July, nothing found. 64 1841 census of Scotland, Banffshire, Gamrie Civil Parish, p. 20, entry for James Innes (age 3), residing

with Alexander Innes (age 25) household; database, “1841 Scottish Census,” FindMyPast (http://www.findmypast.co.uk : accessed 11 May 2012), address Church Street, Gamrie; citing piece 155, folio 4; digital image, ScotlandsPeople (http://www.scotlandspeople.com : accessed 11 May 2012), citing census image 1841, 155/0A, 012/00, 019; National Records of Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh.

James’ mariner career which needs to be completed in both Scotland and London. It’s complicated and time consuming. His second love was Mary Ann Ross whom he married on 6 March 1863 at 4 Trinity Street, Aberdeen, after Banns according to the Established Church of Scotland. James Innes Reid was a bachelor and Seaman (Merchant Services), age 27, residing at 37 Frederick Street, Aberdeen, son of Alexander Reid “sic” [Innes], Seaman (Mate‒Merchant Services) and Helen Reid née Reid. Mary Ann Ross, spinster and Dressmaker, age 19, was residing at 15 Carmelite Lane, Aberdeen. She was the daughter of William Ross, Hay‒Dealer and Elspet Ross née Webster. The newlyweds were married by Thomas Dewar, Minister of South Parish Aberdeen, before William Ross and William Davidson. Registration of the marriage was in the District of St. Nicholas, Burgh of Aberdeen.68

The couple had a daughter, Elspet Reid born 1:00am on 9 January 1864, at 11 Renny’s

Wynd, Aberdeen. James was the informant and registered his daughter’s birth on 31 January 1864.69 Unfortunately, Mary died eleven days after giving birth on 20 January 1864, at the same residence from puerperal fever [a bacterial infection contracted during childbirth]. James, Seaman‒Mate, informed the registrar of his wife’s death on the 21 January 1864.70 Then, tragedy struck again. Ten weeks into life, baby Elspet died of enteritis on 20 March 1864 at 15 Carmelite Lane, St. Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen City.71 She was most likely cared for by her maternal grandparents.

Two years after the death of his first family, James married Jessie Gordon on 9 July

1866, at his home of 1 Short Loanings, Gilcomston, Aberdeen, after Banns according to the forms of the ‘Congregational Churches’, Aberdeen. James now a widower, and Seaman Mate, age 28, resided at 1 Short Loanings, Gilcomston, Aberdeen, son of Alexander Reid “sic” [Innes], Seaman and Helen Reid née Reid. Jessie age 23, spinster and Domestic Servant, resided at Eden Cottage, Mount Street, Aberdeen parents were George Gordon, Flax‒Dresser and Helen Gordon née Bremnar—the only individual of the four parents who was deceased. For the second and third times, Banns of marriage were read to the congregation and published with no objection in the parish church. Banns of Marriage

[1 November 1835]

Banns were also announced and published in the Chapel of Garioch, the parish where Benjamin resided before marriage:138

The above church entry reads:

Reerie &

MacKenzie

Benjamin Reerie in this Parish, and Mary MacKenzie in the Parish of Daviot were contracted, and after regular publications of their Banns were married on the 31st of October.

11. Mary McKenzie, daughter of Alexander McKenzie and Barbara Bruce, was born about 1816, Aberdeenshire. Only one census—1841, tells us of her possible birth place—Aberdeenshire. Further research into the McKenzie family would be an asset. She died before 1851 enumeration, Daviot Parish, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.

14. George Gordon, son of Charles

Gordon and Isabella Thomson, was born in Aberdeen City; and baptized on 19 June 1815 by Rev. Mr. [Robert] Doig Minister [of Trinity Church, St. Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen] in the presence of James Murray, Clerk and William Cowie, Sadler.170

Six months before their marriage, George Gordon and Helen Brebmer “sic” were both living at Causewayend 41, Aberdeen West, but in separate households. George was found enumerated on page 9, Helen on page 8. Helen is presumed living with her mother the “Widow Bremmer” age 50 and an unidentified George Bremmer who was about ten years older than Helen. He was a flax dresser. In “Widow Bremmer’s” household were Helen and George siblings? Or the soon-to-be married couple? This is unclear. Enumerated on 6 June 1841, the Scottish census states all Bremmer’s in “Widow Bremmer’s household were born in Aberdeenshire.171

Margaret Innes née Barron died of old age and debility on 25 May 1864 at 9:30pm at her home 4 Church Lane, MacDuff. She was 82. Her parents were recorded as Alexander Barron (Flesher [Butcher]) and Elizabeth Marr. Both predeceased her. Margaret’s daughter, Isabella (now Anderson) was present at her death registering the event on 31 May 1864 in Banff.283

Research should continue on the Innes family in the Gamrie and MacDuff Parish records. Isabella Wilson was the daughter of Isabella Innes and John Wilson. Isabella’s birth/baptismal record and her parents’ marriage record should be found. Jane Ann McCallum parents are unknown. It is suggested to find her birth/baptismal record and her parents’ marriage.
