1. PRESENTATION

14th Circ d Hivern of Ateneu Popular 9 Barris

The Circ d Hivern comes to its 14th edition with Limbus, the show that opened last 19 December 200910 January 2010 in the theatre of Ateneu Popular 9 Barris.

During this time, there have come8.610 spectators, from which3.620 are children from34 schools andleisure centres, most of them from the district of Nou Barris, following the Ateneu s politics on circuspromotion. The rest of spectators,4.990 are general public (adults and children). We can tell another yearabout the success of Circ d Hivern.

The Circ d Hivern is the central and the most ambitious project from the supporting program to thecontemporary Catalan circus of Ateneu Popular 9 Barris. Each show is submitted in a different and specway being part of the same premise: to perform an unprecedented contemporary circus show for all audienc

The Circ d Hivern counts very year on a unique artistic team coming from the circus world as well as tdance, the theatre and the music.

Dante, in the Divine Comedy (XIV century), placed the virtuoso pagans and Greek classical philosophethe limbus .The Ateneu places the traditional circus neither in the sky nor the hell, neither dead nor alive, staring at as classical and losing the respect as teenagers do.

The circus is understood as an own universe, a common imaginary, a particular perception.

We would like to propose a very personal vision of the circus, feeling it as a hangover, dreamed, imaginbeing able to tell the greatness and the rawness of the circus, the spangles of the dresses and the scratchedstockings, the perfect movement and the rough gesture.

A mist of remembrances able to wrap us and make us see the beginning, how everything started and,maybe, how it finished what remained, a neat vision, extravagant, a bit grotesque.

The contemporary circus is able to teach us, it tells us about the traditional circus.

3. ARTISTIC TEAM

Leandre Ribera - Direction & Clown

Leandre is an all-terrain clown that has travelled around the world thanks to hissense of humour full of poetry, taking the inspiration from the mute cinema, themime and the absurd.He is one of the co-founders of the company La Tal, and worked with it up to 1992presenting child and adult shows. In 1993 he works again as solo clown and startsdeveloping his own character LEANDRE. In 1996 performs Street-tease for thefirst time, a street performance that travels around the world doing more than 801shows. In 1997 he performs for the first time the show ? in the Fira de Trrega, a

solo to be showed on stage.

In collaboration with the French dancer Claire Ducreux, he sets up in 1999 the CIA. LEANDRE-CLAIRtogether create the street show Fragile . In 2000 they set up the show Madame et Monsieur incollaboration with an actor, a musician and two pigeons.

From then, the company has set up Desbandada , a show created by Leandre and the Beat-band thatcombines music live and clown. On another art, Leandre performs Play for the first time in 2004, a strshow created to be performed by a clown and a pianist.

Leandre has directed other companies during 2006 such as Los 2 Play . He is director and plays in theshow Dmods (Cia. La Tal+Leandre), which won the prize Coup de Pouce of he festival Coup de Chheld in Cognac in 2007. He plays in Circ Cric at Teatre Lliure in 2008. He also creates and is director o

Petit of the Cia. Delices, the company Until Now of the British company Mimbre . He is co dirSetembre of the Compaa Res de Res.

Related to Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, Leandre performed in the Combinat de Circ n 20 in February 2003and he was the director of Combinat de Circ n27 in April 2005. He also was co director of Rod , theCirc d Hivern with Tere Celis, and he was prized with the Premi Nacional de Circ 2006.

Cia. La Tal (Jordi Magdaleno i Enric Casso) - Creation & clowns

The show company LA TAL started its professional work in 1986. They travelled wthe child show Ah! Siii! (1987) and did some shows for adults: A concretar (1and Horakronobis (1992).

In 1990 the company directed and was the main character of the show Strip-teassesde Butxaca based on some Joan Brossa s literary works. Three years later, they performedfor the first time the first version of the show Carill . From 1994 to 1996, the company was the creatthe director and the actor for La Tal en concert...? and Tubs...? . During 1997-2000, La Compaa Lbreaks the street market out with Trastugag (1997), Les Fotografiers (1998), and Les Pompiers(2001).

In 1999 they performed for the first time Click...? and the new version of Carillin 2002.

In 2002 La Tal starts working internationally and its shows are present in a widerange of Spanish and European festivals.During 2006-2007, La Tal creates the show Demods with Leandre Ribera.

In the II Festival Internacional de Arte en la Calle Mueca of Puerto de la Cruz,held in 2006, they won the 1r Premi exequo. In 2008 they received the prize Coupde Pouce for Dmods in the Festival Coup de Chauffe de Cognac.

David Moreno Sastre - - Original music

He was born in Sallent, Catalonia, in 1973. He is a Catalan pianist and composer. He studied in Esclat ain the Conservatori de Manresa (Catalonia) with great musicians such as Manel Camp and Quico GenerHe has participated in several seminars working on soundtrack compositions with Bruno Colais, amongothers.His music is eclectic, descriptive, direct and honest, being theatre, circus and cinema the final addresseeof his creations.

He wrote and, most of the time, played live music for shows such as Madame et Monsieur (cia. LeanClaire), Desbandada (cia. Leandre and The Beat Band Premio Fad Sebasti Gasch 2004 pro-theatrart), Play (cia. Leandre i David), Crispetes (cia. Mite-les), Rod (circ dhivern de Barcelona- Pnacional de cultura 2006).

His music has been present in most of the prestigious festivals all over the world (France, UK, Holland,Denmark, Mexico, Brazil, Korea ...).

As a musician, he plays in a different wage of styles such as funky and jazz (The Elstic Band, Lucy,Miembrillos ). He is also participant in circus performances with Circ Cric .

Among his last work, we have to emphasize the music created for the production YDROS for Expo dZaragoza 08 and the several songs created with the producer Kings of Groove .

In September 2008, he performed for the first time his first solo FLOTEN TECLES and he is at preson an international tour with this show and PLAY from Leandre and David.

David Parras Aznar - Musician (tuba)

He was born in Esparraguerra, Catalonia, in 1973. After having studied the elementarylevel of piano, he started playing the tuba in 1988. He studied in the Conservatori

Superior de Barcelona the official qualification, although we have to mention he is a completeautodidact. He is graduated in Educacin Musical by the Universidad de Barcelona.

He usually works in different music styles: jazz, classic music, theatre, educational concerts, recordings.

He is member of the following music bans: Big Band de Granollers, Granonet, Gumbo Jass Band, La PortJazz Band, Hot Brass and Anoia Brass.

Regarding educational concerts, he participated in the Big Band de Granollers productions: Nora i el Jazand La Festa de la Nora. He also works in productions of Servei Educatiu of Auditori de Barcelona: ElsColors del metall and Ecos del Silenci.

He works as a studio musician and he has recorded music for several films such as Gala directed by SlvMunt (2003), Morir en San Hilario directed by Laura Many (2004), etc.

He has also participated in several theatre performances: Mesura per Mesura of W. Shakespeare in theTeatre Nacional de Catalunya; L idiota of Dostoievsky in Grec 2000, and during the sound track recordfor El alcalde de Zalamea in the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya in 2001. In 2002 he works as a musician-actor in the role-play El somni d una nit d estiu in Borrs theatre, and in the Principal theatre. He formDesbandada together with the clown Leandre. Frida Odden - - Malabars and slack wire

Frida was born in Norway n 1983. She started juggling when she was only 10 yearsold. At that period of time, she studied for 6 years and was professionally trainedin AFUK (Denmark), Cirkuspiloterna (Sweden) and in the Acadmie Fratellin(France).Nevertheless, Frida has tried other techniques such as slack wire, wire, monocycle,trapeze, the dancing trapeze and the tight, being specialized in juggling and slack

wire. During her training, Frida started participating in several tours such as the three jugglingperformed in the show The Fighting Machines of North Hollywood with Jay Gilligan and Peter beShe was part of Mise Feu during the graduation act of the Acadmie Fratellini directed by MaksimKomaro (Circo Areo). She participated in the event Aqua from Gandini Juggling directed by John PZaccarini, in London once she finished her training.

She worked with the company Compagnie Jrme Thomas in "Rain Remixed", France, and she carriout 51 performances in Dubai during 2009 with Gandini Juggling Company in the Summer Surprises. F

is well known in the juggling field thanks to her participation in festivals and conventions around all Euroand the world. Frida is able to juggle with 9 bounce balls, a technique awarded with the gold medal durithe 2006 edition in the IJA Festival from Portland (EEUU).

Katja Tomasevic Olsen - Washington trapeze

Katja Olsen was born in Denmark in 1973.She started her professional art career working as a cook in a small Dutch circus.She studied in the "Make-up Artist Academy" in Kolding, Denmark.After that, she studied in the "Die Etage" of Berln for one year and then four yearsmore in the "Ecole Suprieure des Arts du Cirque" in Brussels.

Katja has worked in several festivals in France, Holland, Germany and Denmark.

She created the company Lice de Luxe with Stets y Steffen Lundsgaard, on tourfor Europe and South America.

Related to the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, Katja has been participant in the 8th Circ d Hivern La Plaa dprodigis during 2003 and 2007, as well as in the Combinat 30 directed by Jordi Juanet Boni .

Guilhem Benot - acrobatics

Guilhem Benot was born in France in 1984 and his speciality is floor acrobatics.

He studied in the Ecole de Cirque Prparatoire in Lyon Mnival and in the Ecolde Cirque Professionnelle de Toulouse "Le Lido".

He has worked for several companies such as "Tango Sumo" (France), where heparticipated in the show "Moyen Plume", on tour for Europe.Guilhem is also part of the company "PipoTotal", a French company that works thacrobatic poetry and mechanical allegories as an artistic proposal. It is a street

company that works on mechanical engineering where acrobatics and other wall and installation facilitiehave place.

Guilhem combines acrobatics with movement, dance and theatre performance.

5. THE CIRC AT ATENEU POPULAR 9 BARRIS

The Circ d Hivern at Ateneu Popular 9 Barris

The Circ d Hivern project began in 1996 in order to create a stable company made up of circus-relatedprofessionals and in order to offer quality, innovative performances for all types of audiences, taking advanof the breeding ground of talent that the Ateneu is and always has been. Year after year, the Ateneu Pop9 Barris has been the initiator, the catalyst, the laboratory and the performance space for this project.

We have to thank to first status circus artists and creators from the Catalan & international stage whombelieved in the project. They contributed to place it in an essential place in the Christmas performancesentertainment guide in Barcelona during December and January each year.

Marcel Escolano (Los Galindos), Silvestre (Los Excntricos), Jordi and Adelaida Perills (Circ Perills),Rieck (Cirque Gosh), Jordi Aspa (Escarlata Circus), Miner (The Tilt) and Adrin Schvarzstein (ex memthe Circ Ronaldo), Leandre or Piero Steiner, are just some of the artists who have participated over the yin the Circ d Hivern, creating a school, inspiring children and forming a loyal audience interested in perform

with their own original aesthetic. The Circ d Hivern has been the outlet that allows the Ateneu Popular 9 to share with the public its own special way of understanding circus. Circus as a language, as a permaneevolving art due to its confluence with other art forms.

In 2005, the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris began to place more emphasis on the distribution of productions. TAteneu has continued along these lines in the hopes of creating a stable circuit of stage circus (non-exiright now) in Catalonia and promote the artistic and creative quality of circus professionals in Cataloniarest of Spain and Europe.

As a result, the Klezmer Circus the 9th annual Circ d Hivern show has been performed over 200 timCatalonia, the rest of Spain and internationally. Rod, the 10th annual Winter Circus show, won the NatCircus Award. El Circ de Sara, the 11th edition show of Circ d Hivern, has been part of the tours done towith the Direcci General de Cooperaci Cultural of Generalitat de Catalunya and the Oficina de Difusi Aof Diputaci de Barcelona (ODA). In 2009 took part in the festival Teatralia in Madrid. On the other hareceived the Premi San Miguel to Millor Muntatge en Sala (best theatre staging) from the 2006 editioFestival de Trrega.

The Combinats de Circ at Ateneu Popular 9 Barris

Apart from the Circ d Hivern, Combinats de Circ (Circus Combinations) is another fundamental produprogram.

The Combinats de Circ are already a trademark of the Ateneu and by the end of the season 40 Combinathave been produced since 1996. This program allows newcomers access to decent technical conditions.Each season 25 to 30 artists participate in three Combinats. The director s gaze gives form to a fresh performthat is almost always unrepeatable. The Combinats are laboratories where artists can innovate, create,experiment and find new outlets for their values. Last Combinats de Circ caused a huge demand and thetickets run out, leaving too many people without being able to assist to the show. This fact gives evidencenowadays circus art is alive and the loyalty of its public, expert and anxious of new proposals.

Network projects

L Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, La Grainerie (a creation centre in Balma, close to Toulouse, Midi-PyrnesFerme du Riu Ferrer (a residence centre in Arles-sur-Tech, Languedoc-Roussillon), the Festival de circ ianimaci de carrer Animahu (Osca, Arag) are members of the European project Bivac i caravana de ciCam de Circ has been working during two years on the circus over borders cooperation inside the PirinMediterranean Euro region. This project encourages artists, professionals and young artists to developthemselves and their artistic proposals, as well as the ability and experience exchange.Thanks to this project, there is a wide open collaboration with the project Interreg called Circ-que-o! , wis supported by several Catalan institutions (Associaci de Professionals de Circ-APCC, Escola de Circ RRivel, La Vela residence in Vilanova i la Geltr).The Ateneu takes part in the programme Camins Emergents and it receives the acts of Circ enTranshumncia .

Looking at the French part, the region Midi-Pyrnes (La Grainerie, Escola de Circ Le Lido and the UnivLe Mirail de Toulouse) takes part of it, as well as in Arag (Spain) (el Festival Animahu and the AssociMalabaristes de Saragossa).

Ateneu takes part in the programme Cooperaci Qubec-Catalunya 2009-2011 offering social circus activOther actions taken part in this programme are Le Cirque du Soleil , La Tohu , En Piste , EscolRogelio Rivel , the APCC and the Ateneu , being the office of Qubec in Barcelona the nexus.

Other circus projects in the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris

Ateneu Popular 9 Barris offers a training programme specialized in leisure activities: the Escola InfantilJuvenil de Circ (Children and youngsters school of circus) and it counts on almost 100 students from 6 years olds. Looking at the social part of it, the Ateneu offers circus workshops for children living in the of Nou Barris and it is implementing experiences in different circus activities directed to handicapped peand old people.

Apart from the three Combinats de Circ performed each season and the Circ d Hivern, the students of Ede Circ Rogelio Rivel work on a circus show that is performed at the end of the year. There is as well the PObertes (a place where students in a training process can present their artistic proposals). There is also aresidence programme oriented to artists in which the main goal is to promote the exchange between creatcoming from different disciplines to encourage creation processes and offer continuity perspectives.

Ateneu Popular 9 Barris won the Premi Butaca Honorfic 2009 to its circus promotion and training taskunderstood as a social transforming tool.

2004, Circus KlezmerIt performs a marriage inside a circus with Klezmer music. This show is based on the Jewish humand it takes the spectator to a small town in East Europe at the beginning of XX century. It wasfirst Circ d Hivern from the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris and it is still on tour. Adrin Schvarzsteincreator and director, and the participants are Maite Sanjuan Lola , Emiliano S.Alessi, CristinaJoan Catal and Adrin Schvarzstein himself. Music is played by Rebecca Macauley, Petra Ro(o Tanja Haupt) and Nigel Haywood. All the movement aspects danccircus or drama- is the main point of the show and it is staged by Susana Goulart.The movement is present in a metaphoric way: it is the click we allcan do to change our life direction. The mainof the show is that fantasy and reality are put together as an invention created by Dr. Lazlo, thedreaming machine.
