he General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into effect on May 25, 2018. Wipro believes that the GDPR
represents a fundamental shift in the way data protection and privacy is managed throughout the data lifecycle. The GDPR focuses on best-practice IT security and datamanagement principles.
The regulation attempts to strike a balance between the rights of the individual and the ability of companies to differentiate their services and products by enabling access to quality information.
However, to earn that trust companies have responsibilities, which are enforced through legislation such as the GDPR and other market forces. High profile data breaches have made significant impact on the value and reputation of the companies affected.

Solution Overview
Wipro has experience working with clients globally on privacy and GDPR engagements. Wipro’s view is that GDPR objectives are best achieved when governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) is aligned with technology. For example, while it is important to have policies in place governing data management and protection, how does a company manage its data compliance requirements when it doesn’t know what data it has, or where that data is stored, or with whom it shares the data?
The Data Lifecycle
Technology links all components of the data lifecycle (see Figure 2) as they relate to the processing of personal data into a manageable and cohesive whole. Wipro has the people, expertise and experience across all facets of the data lifecycle to help our clients achieve their objectives cost effectively. We provide our services in conjunction with our alliance partners, thereby allowing our clients to focus on core business activities.
The maximum fine of 4% of global turnover is an important consideration for those charged with governance. Combined with the reputational impact and loss of shareholder value, the aggregated residual risk is likely to exceed the risk appetite of the company. This will drive prioritized compliance activity and boards will expect to start seeing results soon.
