TIMES Summer Explorations courses are offered in 3 different sessions. Summer Environmental Workshop courses are offered Sessions 1 and 2, with both morning and afternoon classes. Be sure to verify the dates and time for each session in the course descriptions.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration for summer programs begins on March 9, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. Registration will close on March 30, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. For additional information about these courses, please contact 913.239.4246. Please use ParentVue to register students for courses. This can be done by navigating to https://bvpo.bluevalleyk12.org/. Additional information for registering is included at the end of this packet. Students enroll for the grade they will enter in the fall of 2020. The payment window will open on April 8, 2020 and it will close on April 30, 2020.
ATTENDANCE Any student who will miss more than 2 days of class should not enroll. Students will be dropped from the roster after 2 missed classes and will not be eligible for a refund. Any cancellations after the registration deadline may result in an administrative fee.
OTHER INFORMATION Summer programs are financially supported through student tuition. Registration is not complete until payment is received. Students with outstanding fees may be removed from class rosters beginning on May 1st, 2020. Fees are not adjusted for free/reduced lunch status. Programs may have wait lists based on content, facilities, equipment, and teacher availability. For additional information about the wait lists, contact 913.239.4246.

Brain Power at Play What can we learn from toys and how do we pick the best ones?
Together we will design our own game review videos, create criteria for
the perfect play experience, and analyze toy leadership. Come think
critically while having a great time. We will test out short and long games,
games for speed or learning, cooperation games, games of luck, and
strategy. Green screen and iMovie technology used.

Broadway Bound This class is designed to give students an opportunity to explore his/her
interest in the aspects of musical theater. Students will demonstrate
creative expression through performing, while also using literacy skills.
This course is filled with exciting activities such as writing scripts,
reader’s theater, singing, and acting. Each week’s course will end with a
mini-performance produced by the students! Each student will receive a
recording of their performance at the end of the course!

Capturing Digital Memories Come challenge yourself with a photography unit complete with online
scrapbooking and portfolio tutorials. Students will learn key techniques,
complete daily photo scavenger hunts, edit photos with iPad or phone
tools, and post to digital programs. Students will build a scrapbook on
Mixbook.com and test out gallery options on a website of their own
using Wix. Students will share and review each other's work for additional
feedback and growth. Students will work independently and in teams for
different aspects of this course.

Circus Sampler Do you like clowning around and performing? We will look at many
circus skills like juggling, hula hoop tricks and plate spinning. We will
work toward a group show at the end of the week.

Cooking Cool Cultural Foods (exploring food from Latin America) Students will be exposed to recipes for yummy foods eaten in 4 different
Spanish speaking countries! Come learn how to read a recipe, measure
ingredients and create the recipe for delicious yet simple foods eaten in
Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, and Puerto Rico. Your student will come
home with a new found love for cooking, setting the table and even
helping wash the dishes at dinner time in your home!

Cupcake Wars! Compete in a delicious dessert challenge to show off your creativity and
problem solving skills! Learn to skillfully pipe frosting, create unique
batters & fillings, and design your own 3D display. Each day will feature a
unique treat to take home, culminating in the ultimate cupcake competition
and a chance to earn the coveted Golden Whisk Award!

Drum Up Some Fun In this course students will get to experience the therapeutic and exciting
effect of drumming! We will start each day off with a drum circle activity
where kids get to use their creativity to share with the group. Throughout
the week they will learn various drumming and percussion techniques,
experience a few multicultural songs, and practice working together as a
team.

Exploring Kansas Habitats at WSC Grades 1-2 (5001 W. 163rd Terr. Stilwell, KS) Students will participate in a variety of activities that increase awareness
and appreciation for the natural environment. Students will have an
opportunity to investigate the prairie, study the forest, learn about the
wetlands, and work in the WSC’s butterfly garden while studying the
garden’s flowers, insects, and other wildlife.

Exploring Kansas Habitats at WSC Grades 3-4 (5001 W. 163rd Terr. Stilwell, KS) Students will engage in a variety of outdoor activities exploring nature by
studying the three main habitats at the WSC: forest, wetland, and prairie.
Hands-on activities will energize and enhance their experiences, Students
will be interacting with nature through observations, journaling, collecting,
recording, measuring, graphing, and hiking. This is an opportunity for
students to practice and apply many of their science skills through an
authentic outdoor learning experience.

Facing the Challenges of Middle School with Class…for Girls Only! This leadership course will dive deep into the world of girls’ relationships.
Topics explored are: social media, friendship, handling conflict, body
image, self-esteem, jealousy, authentic beauty, self-care and more! Girls
in this course will engage in interactive activities, projects, reflection, and
videos by the author of the STEP Up pr ogram.

Game Design with Scratch If your student likes playing video games and wants to lea rn more about
how they are created, then we have the class for them! Students will
learn basic video game coding concepts by making different types of
games, including racing, platform, launching and more! Students will be
using a free programming language called Scratch. Scratch is a block-
based visual program that is a great starting point for any student to be
immersed in the world of programming.

Get Your Game Face On Time to unplug! In this course you will enjoy classic games . Join us as we
play all the favorites, including Scrabble, Connect 4, Battleship, Yahtzee,
Corn hole, Horseshoes, Kickball, H.O.R.S.E and a whole lot more. The
students will have an opportunity to foster strategic skills and teamwork
while engaging in a little friendly competition. The program will increase
student’s focus, self-esteem, patience, and confidence.

Jumping to Advanced Integrated Mathematics 7 (Incoming 7th Graders ONLY) This course is intended for students who did not take Advanced Math in
6th grade, but wish to take Advanced Integrated Math 7 as 7
th graders.
The course content applies and extends previous understandings of
operations with positive rational numbers to all rational numbers.
Students will dive deeper into concepts learned in 6th grade math to
prepare them for Advanced Integrated Math 7.
NOTE: This course is a 3-week session, and students are required to attend all 3 weeks.

Jumping to 8th Grade Algebra 1 (Incoming 8th Graders ONLY) This course is intended for students who did not take Advanced Math in
7th grade, but wish to take Algebra 1 as 8 th graders. Concepts will
include, but are not limited to, rational and irrational numbers,
applications of the Pythagorean Theorem, and volume and surface area
of three-dimensional objects, including pyramids, cones, and spheres. By
successfully completing this course, 7 th Grade Integrated Math students
will be prepared for Algebra 1 their 8 th grade year.
NOTE: This course is a 3-week session, and students are required to
attend all 3 weeks.

Junior Naturalist Training at WSC (5001 W. 163rd Terr. Stilwell, KS) Fifth and sixth grade students have an opportunity to learn as a Wilderness
Science Center Junior Naturalist. To fulfill that role, students will study
ecology and learn to identify Kansas plants and animals, their special
adaptations, and examine how they interact with each other at the
Wilderness Science Center. The activities will include reading the land by
looking for clues, interpreting their findings, and drawing conclusions.

Just Dance This class is about exploring who we are as dancers, as well as learning
about the different styles and technique of dancing. Some genres that
will be explored are Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Pom. Routines in
each genre will be taught throughout the week. Games involving dance
will also be incorporated. Students will collaborate with other dancers to
choreograph their own routines. There will be a recital for family and
friends at the end of the week!

Let’s Debate! Students will learn how to construct an argument and debate in a fun,
yet challenging way. Among the skills students will learn is research,
argument construction, rebuttals, and public speaking. Student will
participate in a mock parliamentary style debate to end the week.

Messy Art Love creating different masterpieces and don't mind getting your hands

Mindfulness and You! We will spend time getting to know you and how your brain work s! We’ll
learn which part of our brain our emotions come from and how they work.
We’ll explore whether our thoughts are facts or not. We’ll become thought-
detectives and find the evidence behind our thoughts. If we’ve identified
negative thoughts we’ll learn how to replace them with positive ones.
Next, we’ll explore what mindfulness is and the research that supports the
benefits of this practice. Mindfulness allows us to slow down and simply
notice things without over reacting to them.

Once Upon a Time (STEM tales) Students will dive into their favorite fairy tales and nursery rhymes to
solve different engineering challenges throughout the week. They will do
this by designing and building different objects to address a particular
problem related to the story. Some of the stories we will cover are Three
Little Pigs, Jack and The Beanstalk, Gingerbread Man, and so many
more.

STEAM: Read All About It STEAM: Read All About It is a course that emphasizes the powerful link
between reading and the appreciation of literature and STEAM -based
activities. Students will be introduced to a variety of books that provide
stimulating examples of how science, technology, engineering, art, and
mathematics can inspire us and make an impact our world. Students will
then have a hands-on, collaborative project to re-enforce the lessons
from the book taught by a professional licensed Engineer.

Writer’s Workshop Wish you had more time to put your creative and critical thinking to good

ranging from R.L. Stine, to Judy Blume and James Patterson. We will
also practice giving good critiques and receiving constructive feedback.

Your Favorite Sports and Games! Trying to keep the kids active this summer or just want them to burn off
