General Shutters information

There are a range of Shutter styles. Full height The most popular choice and can be supplied with or without mid/divider rails. The mid rails can be central or offset to match horizontal glazing bars and provide enhanced light and privacy control. Café style Shutters installed to a point between the top and bottom of a window. This is often halfway up but can be to any suitable position. Café style is great for allowing light to flood in over the top of the Shutters while providing complete privacy lower down. Tier on tier Two sets of Shutters installed one on top of the other in the same frame with the split generally in line with a horizontal glazing bar on the window. Each set operates independently offering flexible control of light and privacy. Tracking Tracked shutters are ideal for use over French doors, patio doors, bi fold doors or any wide aperture where the panels are fitted at floor level. Solid Shutters An alternative to standard Shutters. Choose from Solid Raised Shutters that offer near blackout and enhanced insulation from noise, or Solid Base/Louvred Top Shutters ideal for covering half glazed doors. Classic This is an engineered product made using a MDF outer and a polymer coating. MDF – Medium-density fibreboard is a wood product created by breaking down timber into a powder, which is mixed with wax and resin and then formed into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. It is a building material similar in application to plywood but made up of separated fibres, not wood veneers. Panels are manufactured to the highest standards using mortise and tenon joints to ensure prolonged quality and durability, and engineered laminated stiles to prevent warping. Colours Classic Shutters are available in a choice of solid colours (see specification sheets for details). Gloss Level Classic shutters are available with standard gloss level. Cleveland Cleveland Shutters are manufactured using a range of composite materials including MDF panels with ABS louvres and MDF frames to produce an outstanding, reliable and tough shutter suitable for most applications. Panels are manufactured to the highest standards using mortise and tenon joints to ensure prolonged quality and durability, and engineered laminated stiles to prevent warping. Colours Cleveland Shutters are available in a choice of solid painted colours (see specification sheets for details). Gloss Level Standard gloss level only. Marchwood Marchwood shutters are a step up in quality, made using engineered, solid hardwood panels and utilising the same MDF frames used on Classic. Panels are manufactured to the highest standards using mortise and tenon joints to ensure prolonged quality and durability, and engineered laminated stiles to prevent warping. Colours Available in a choice of solid colours (see specification sheets for details). Gloss Level Available with standard gloss level.

Phoenix Ideal for Shutters, Phoenix is a very lightweight hardwood that comes from a Parasol tree. This grows to full height (45 ft) in only eight years. The eight rings (one for each year of growth) produce a distinctive character and a grain reminiscent of oak that stands out even when painted. The timber is solution soaked for one month, after which the moisture is vacuumed out leaving a strong but very lightweight, bleached wood. The bleaching leaves the wood almost white, which means that we can offer a range of stained finishes as well as the ever popular painted colours. Phoenix Shutters also feature engineered stiles. Colours Phoenix benefits from a wide range of painted and stained colours (see specification sheets for details). Gloss Level Matt and Standard levels are available. If no gloss level is specified the shutters will be made with the standard gloss level. Grovewood Grovewood shutters are made from White Teak premium hardwood, a superb fast growing and durable timber, ideal for our wide range of painted and stained finishes. Colours Grovewood benefits from a wide range of painted and stained colours (see specification sheets for details). Gloss Level Matt or Standard gloss levels are available. If no gloss level is specified the shutters will be made with the standard gloss level. Vienna Vienna is made from ABS, a highly durable and waterproof material ideal for moist or humid conditions and so is recommended for use and bathrooms and wet rooms. This special material is used in industry to make hardwearing and tough components for cars, electrical appliances and in the building trade. Vienna shutters are constructed using an enclosed timber core in the stiles to ensure stability and using the same precision manufacturing techniques used in making timber shutters. Colours Vienna is available in a range of painted finishes (see specification sheets for details). Gloss Level Vienna shutters are available in Matt only. NB. Vienna is supplied with 50.8mm stiles only.

Shutter Components Shutters are made up of a number of component parts that are fixed together to make a strong, durable and attractive window covering.

A mortise and tenon joint is used to attach top and bottom rails to the stile for a highly stable and extremely strong construction. All shutters are assembled into their frames in the factory as a final check to ensure all the components are present and that the shutters fit correctly. This is done on a glass top table so that the check is done on an absolutely flat surface.

Stiles

Stiles are engineered using strips of timber or mdf and cross laminated to enhance strength and resistance to warping. The type of stile used varies depending on the position of the panel in a set of Shutters and configuration. The standard UK stile is 41.3mm wide and this is used in the majority of installations. However the US standard width of 50.8mm is also available as an option and is standard on Vienna shutters.

Top & Bottom rail The size of the top and bottom rail will vary slightly because the factory will calculate the best size based on the overall dimensions of the Shutters. However, they will always be 80mm or larger, unless otherwise specified as a special instruction. The top and bottom rail will be approximately the same size if there is no divider rail. It’s a good idea to order Shutters for the same customer at one time, so that the rail size will match.

Page 7: General shutters info - Moonfruit · Sandringham Shutters Shutters Sep ‘15 Page 1 of 29 General Shutters information ... timber into a powder, ... It’s a good idea to order Shutters

Where two sets of Shutters with different dimensions are to be installed next to each other, the size of the top and bottom rails may not match. Matching top/bottom rails can be ordered at additional cost as a special instruction. Mid/Divider rail The standard mid rail is 76.2mm. Use is optional if the panel height is under 180cm, but mandatory if over 180cm. The mid rail adds character, improved control of light and extra strength. It can be positioned centrally or offset to match the design of the window.

Tilt Rods There are three options for tilt rods. Standard The standard tilt rod is positioned centrally on the panel. Hidden – Easitilt Hidden tilt rods can be ordered in all louvre sizes except 47mm louvres.

The maximum number of louvres per hidden tilt rod is shown in the table above. If the number of louvres exceeds this, two equal sized mechanisms will be used. If there is an odd number, the bottom section will be larger. (i.e. bottom section will have one more louvre than top section). This also applies to panels with mid rails. Offset The standard distance for an offset tilt rod is 25mm from the end of the louvre, on the hinged side.

Offset standard tilt rod for multi-fold Shutters Tilt rods will be offset from the centre on multi-fold panels so that the panels can be folded flat. The standard offset is 7mm from the centre, i.e. tilt rod will be 7mm to the left from the centre for the left panels, and 7mm to the right from the centre for the right panels. See diagram below.

NB. There is no need to offset tilt rods on 2 panels (LL or RR) and 4 panel (LLRR) configuration.

Frames

Frame configuration The configuration of the frame depends on the circumstances on site and the customer’s preferences. Frames can be 2, 3 or 4 sided as required, are mitred and ready to be assembled on site using Hoffman keys to construct them. The frames provide a rigid structure for the Shutters to hang from.

4 sided frame This is the easiest fitting option and the best all round coverage.

Three-sided frame 3B or 3T. Used in Café style installations and doors where a top track is not used, or when the Shutters are fitted outside the recess and there is a protruding sill.

Two-sided frame Simply a piece of frame attached to each side of the window. This option requires careful installation.

Light Block Light block and magnet catches are automatically supplied with two and three sided frames.

Specifying positions of safety bolts In theory, you can specify four bolts (one in each corner) on each panel, however this is unnecessary in practical terms. In most circumstances one or possibly two bolts per panel will prevent the panel being opened without using a key. For example on a panel configuration of LLRR, you could specify the position of safety bolts as follows: Example 1 Bolts on panels 1 and 2 bottom right and panels 3 and 4 bottom left (1RB, 2RB, 3LB, 4LB) Example 2 Bolts on panel 1 bottom right, panel 2 top right, Panel 3 top left and Panel 4 bottom left. (1RB, 2RT, 3LT, 4LB) Door Option Where shutters are used to cover a door that is regularly used as an access point e.g. front/back doors or patio doors used regularly in the summer, it’s vital to ensure the shutters are made to withstand being used as a door as opposed to shading at a window. There are three options. 1. Specify DOOR OPTION on the order. On shutters with a panel config of L, R or L, R, additional hinges are fitted and headrails and bottomrails are made wider to cope with the extra stress and strain of use and ensure long term reliable performance. 2. Specify a tracked shutter. On any other installation over a door it is highly recommended to use a track to ensure there is enough support for the shutter to be used as a door. 3. If the customer decides against a track, then hinged shutters can be supplied as per normal specification. However, it is strongly recommended that a 4 sided frame is used on timber shutters only, and the panel feet must be left in place to ensure the panels are properly supported.

Tracked Shutters Tracking is ideal for patio doors and room dividers and is supplied in kit form that includes the following components: • Header with track already attached • Side frames • Integrated adjustable wheel carriers and pivot points • Bottom pivot supports • Bottom track with end caps or bottom pivot L brackets • Spring loaded guides Shutter specification varies by product type, please refer to specification sheets. Barrel Bolt These bolts are available on 50.8mm stiles only, will secure panels into the bottom track and can help with operating in particular large span tracked shutters. The bolt cannot be fitted on the same stile as the bottom track guides. The bolt location default is as shown:

Sandringham Shutters Shutters Sep ‘15

Ring Pulls Ring pulls are available on Tracked shutters only and will be supplied in the same colour as specified for hinges (there’s no option for an alternate colour). If selected ring pulls will be fitted to default panels using the same logic as is used to position barrel bolts. As they are factory fitted a height dimension (from the bottom of the panel) is required. Bottom Tracks It is recommended that bottom tracks are always fitted in order to give the best possible performance and reliability. However on Grovewood and Marchwood shutters a bottom pivot L bracket is available. We strongly recommend that this option is only used on shutters up to LLRR config and that wider shutters should benefit from bottom tracks being fitted. Floating panels Floating panels are available on tracked shutters as an alternative to the regular L & R config options. Panels can only operate in pairs or fours and be opened to either end of the track as required. Mixed config (e.g. LLFF, or FFFFRR etc.) is available.

Solid Raised No louvre, solid Shutters offer near blackout whilst also giving you almost complete insulation from noise. They are fitted in the same way as louvre shutters and are not generally suitable as replacements for Regency tapered reveal box fitting. Also ideal as a folding/concertina tracked partition and can be used to make very good, superior quality, light folding doors. Available in Grovewood and Phoenix only.

Solid Base Louvred Top Shutters Combining a solid base and louvred upper section, these Shutters are ideal for complimenting partially glazed doors.

Surveying An accurate survey is a critical aspect of selling & fitting Shutters. It’s vital to establish the most appropriate specification for the installation. Step 1 – Preparation We recommend the following tools be taken on all Shutter surveys:

Tape measure and/or measuring stick

Spirit level (to check the alignment of the window)

Angle finder or protractor

Masking tape and pencil

Shutter samples

Confirmation forms Step 2 – Communication The customer’s preferences and expectations of how they will use the Shutters on a day-to-day basis should be ascertained.

Establish which installation style they prefer - full height, café style, tier-on-tier or solid Shutter.

Find out how the Shutters will be used (e.g. a street level urban environment may need the Shutters to remain in place with only the louvres being tilted to control privacy and light)

Establish the fitting position (door, window, bay etc)

Decide on an inside or outside recess installation.

Determine the frame type or top track requirement and consider T post options if relevant.

Establish the number and configuration of panels required.

Agree the louvre width required.

Decide the mid rail height if required. Mid rails are mandatory on panels of 180cm or more high and optional below that height. Mid rails can be located centrally on the panel, or to a specified height to match a glazing bar (positional tolerances apply). The required dimension when specifying mid-rail positions is from the base of the frame to the centre of the mid-rail

Always use sample frames and panels to identify fixing positions. Step 3 – Measuring In the vast majority of circumstances, using OD (Overall Dimension) should be used. OD of frame size is the outside dimension of the Shutter including the frame. NB on Z frames, the overlap part of the frame is not included. No deduction will be taken from your measurements in the factory. We suggest various allowances that should be made in the following instructions as a general guide to ensure the Shutters fit correctly. However, it is the responsibility of the individual surveying the installation site to make the correct allowances.

Inside recess

Check the width & drop all the way across/down the window.

If the diagonal dimension from the corner varies by more than 12mm, an inside recess installation should not be attempted.

Ensure that louvres will not foul window furniture (handles, locks, etc) when tilted.

Check for other obstructions (dado rails etc)

Check that customer is aware that the Shutters may protrude into the room beyond the recess depth when folded back.

Check that the window sill is level. A Shutter panel may catch on sill slopes on three sided frames.

Use the smallest width and drop measurements Outside recess

Check that there is enough room for the panels to fold back.

Look for obstructions (protruding sills etc)

Ensure adequate coverage over the window recess.

Full height Shutters Inside recess

Use the frame samples and sample panel to ensure the fixing position does not foul the window furniture. The frames can be face fixed or side fixed.

If face-fixing, allow sufficient space for the louvre to rotate.

Measure the recess width at the narrowest point and deduct 5mm to calculate the overall dimension (OD) width.

Measure the recess drop at its shallowest point and deduct 3mm to calculate the OD height.

Outside recess

Use a sample frame and decide the frame position by marking the outside edges onto the wall. We suggest 5mm visible plaster between the recess edge and the inside edge of the Shutter frame.

Check that the louvres will not foul the wall when opened and measure between your marks to calculate the OD width.

Mark the position of the top edge of the frame onto the wall leaving 5mm visible plaster below the frame.

Mark the bottom edge of the Shutter set onto the wall. This will be the frame if four sided (for windows without a protruding sill) or the frame up-rights if three sided (for windows with a protruding sill).

Measure between marks to establish the OD frame height. Café style Shutters Inside recess with three sided frame (3B)

Use the frame samples and sample panel to ensure the fixing position does not foul the window furniture. The frames can be face fixed or side fixed.

If face-fixing, allow sufficient space for the louvre to rotate.

Measure the recess width at the narrowest point and deduct 5mm to calculate the overall OD width.

Decide where the top of the panels/frame will be and mark the position onto the window frame.

Measure from the mark to the sill at its shallowest point to establish the OD height.

Outside recess with 3 sided frame (3B)

Use sample frame and decide the frame position by marking the outside edges onto the wall. We suggest 5mm visible plaster between the recess edge and the inside edge of the Shutter frame.

Check that the louvres will not foul the wall when opened and measure between your marks.

Decide where the top of the panels/frame will be and mark the position onto the wall.

Now mark the position of the bottom edge of the frame onto the wall leaving the recommended 5mm of visible plaster above.

Measure between these two marks to establish the OD height.

Tier-on-tier Shutters Inside recess with 3T or 4 sided frame

Use the frame samples and sample panel to ensure the fixing position does not foul the window furniture. The frames can be face fixed or side fixed.

If face-fixing, allow sufficient space for the louvre to rotate.

Measure the recess width at the narrowest point and deduct 5mm to calculate the overall dimension (OD) width.

Measure the recess drop at its shallowest point and deduct 3mm to calculate the OD height.

Decide where the top of the lower tier panels will be and mark the position (the split is usually even, but you can line up with horizontal glazing bars).

Measure from the mark to the bottom of the frame (sill level) to establish the split dimension and enter this on the order form.

If a horizontal T-post is required between the upper & lower panels, this should be requested in the special instructions section on the order form.

Outside recess with 3T or 4 sided frame

Use sample frame and decide the frame position by marking the outside edges onto the wall. We suggest 5mm visible plaster between the recess edge and the inside edge of the Shutter frame.

(three-sided frames will be supplied with a ‘light block’ profile to fit between the bottoms of the frame uprights, onto which the lower panels will close).

Bay windows Bay windows can be surveyed using bay/corner posts or as separate frame shutters that butt up.

Place a sample bay/corner post or two L frame sample profiles inside the recess at the first corner point.

Ensure the panels would be sufficiently far enough forward to prevent them fouling the window furniture when tilted open (handles, locks, etc).

If using bay/corner posts, measure from the recess side to the theoretical point at the back of the bay/corner post

If using separate frames, measure from the recess side to the front outer edge of the left hand side sample

Deduct 3mm to establish the first OD width.

Then measure from the first corner point to the second and so on for each elevation. When using bay/corner posts, use the theoretical measuring point at the back. If using separate frames, butt each frame up and measure where they meet.

Finally measure from the last corner point to the outside front edge of the right hand side frame or the theoretical point at the back of a bay/corner post.

Measure the drop at its shallowest point & deduct 3mm to ascertain the OD height.

Installation The process for installing Shutters will vary according to the decisions made during the survey and measuring process. The following is therefore a description of a basic installation with frames. Inside Recess fit 1) Unpack the Shutters and frames taking care to locate the hardware packs. 2) Find a clear area on the floor and assemble the frames. 3) Drill pilot holes if required for fixing screws ensuring they are equi-distant. 4) Put the frame in place and secure temporarily at two points. Do not secure frame

permanently. 5) Offer up the Shutter panels and secure in place using the hinge pins. (NB take

care not to scratch the sill) 6) Adjust the position and alignment of the panels to ensure they close correctly. 7) Secure the frame using your remaining fixing points 8) Check that the Shutters operate satisfactorily 9) Use decorators calk to fill any gaps between the edge of the frame and the

recess. 10) Fit cover strips if ordered. Outside recess fit 1) Unpack the Shutters and frames taking care to locate the hardware packs. 2) Locate the top frame and drill a pilot hole 3) Use the top of the frame to mark a central point on the wall suitable for drilling.

Ensure you have positioned the frame at your measuring points. 4) Find a clear area on the floor and assemble the frames. 5) Drill remaining pilot holes for fixing screws ensuring they are equi-distant. 6) Put the frame in place and secure temporarily. Do not secure frame permanently. 7) Offer up the Shutter panels and secure in place using the hinge pins. 8) (NB take care not to scratch the sill) 9) Adjust the position and alignment of the panels to ensure they close correctly. 10) Secure the frame using your remaining fixing points. 11) Check that the Shutters operate satisfactorily. 12) Fit cover strips if ordered.

Track installation 1) Unpack the Shutters taking care to locate the hardware packs. 2) You should have:

Header with track, fascia, pivot brackets and trucks installed 2 x Side frames 1 x bottom track/Bottom Pivot L brackets Hardware pack containing: Hinge pins Spanners Bottom pivot brackets Assorted screws Bottom tracks end caps

3) Install header into the underside of the lintel using suitable rawl plugs and screws. Do not remove the valance.

4) Fit side frames into place. 5) Dependant on config, fit bottom tracks or bottom pivot L bracket/s ensuring they

line up with the top track position. 6) Assemble the shutters sets. Depending on config, you may find

it easier to add panels onto the track individually. Each panel is numbered on the top edge working from left to right.

7) Lift and locate one shutter set into the track pivot bracket and then locate the bottom pivot into the bottom pivot bracket.

8) Locate the removable cover plate on the door hardware on the top edge of the floating panel. Unlock as shown on the screw head and push up to remove the plate.

9) Hook the truck pin into the door hardware and replace the cover plate. Repeat as necessary on remaining panels.

10) Adjustments can be made by loosening the locking nut on the bolt on the bottom pivot and increasing/decreasing the height of the panel as required. Retighten the locking nut after adjustments have been made.

11) Adjustments can also be made on the truck pins by removing the hardware cover plate, disconnecting the panel and using a screw driver drive the pin up into the track or down as required.

12) Adjust as required the position of the top and bottom pivot brackets to ensure the gap between the panel and the recess side is equal at the top and bottom.

13) Fit the light block behind the panels on both sides of the recess 14) Ensure the panels are moving satisfactorily and operate correctly.
