Appendix 2: Information: Functioning of a sprinkler system

1.1 Fire Security System

The purpose of a sprinkler system is to detect a potential fire anywhere in the secure property early on, to draw

attention to it and then to fight it automatically, or keep the fire under control so that the fire department can fully

extinguish it. Royal FloraHolland’s buildings are also fitted with a fire alarm system. The sprinkler system and the

fire alarm system coordinate with one another and work together.

1.2 Activating sprinklers and controlling fire

If a fire starts in a room with sprinklers, the melting pattern or the liquid-filled glass in the sprinkler directly above

the source of the fire will break within a few minutes due to the rise in temperature. It is therefore not the case that

in the event of a fire, all sprinklers will open at the same time.

When the sprinkler is opened, water will begin to spray, the pressure in the pipeline network will drop and the

water supply (pump) will be activated automatically. Through flow and pressure switches, the flow of the water will

alert the fire department and other interested parties automatically.

If the fire develops very quickly, the sprinklers located in the immediate vicinity of the source of the fire will open

and extinguishing water will start to spray.

By cooling, quelling and keeping wet the materials that have yet to burn, the fire will be kept under control and,

under favorable conditions, even extinguished.

If the fire has been extinguished, the water supply may be stopped by turning and closing the valve under the

alarm switch for the relevant floor. Only the fire department/Company Fire Service may do this.

1.3 Spray pattern

The extinguishing water that sprays out of the opening will touch the deflector or spreading plate on the underside

of the sprinkler, causing the water to spread around the sprinkler and creating a particular spray pattern. The

sprinklers are located at such a distance from one another that all stored items can be sprayed. It is therefore

necessary that a sprinkler is also able to reach the area furthest away from it.

In the event that an undesirable object is obstructing the spray pattern, the sprinkler will not be able to cover the

entire area. This is known as an obstruction and is not permitted. If this is unavoidable due to the presence of

ducts or other parts of the system, for example, additional sprinklers will be required.
