PERMIT NO. 6In a holiday spirit of compassion, generosity, and team spirit, the community of Jefferson’s Ferry – led by staff member Maria Espinosa -- shared its collective good fortune with those devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines through a $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross. Maria Espinosa and her Filipino co-workers at Jefferson’s Ferry, joined by a majority of the 200 employees, requested that their holiday gift be held and given instead to the American Red Cross for its relief efforts in the Philippines, where many of their family and friends were devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. The typhoon struck in the fall of 2013 and killed nearly 6,000 and leaving millions without shelter, food or water. Earlier, Espinosa led a food and clothing drive at Jefferson’s Ferry for typhoon victims. Jefferson’s Ferry residents, members of the Board of Directors, and executive personnel made personal contributions, adding to the pooled resources of the employees, making possible the $10,000 donation presented in December to the American Red Cross during the staff’s holiday party.

Although the snowstorms we endured this past winter might have made some people frosty, we were warmed by the countless opportunities to interact with one another and to engage in activities that will benefit others here and abroad. A few of our most memorable and vibrant moments are included in this newsletter.

As a community, we helped people devastated in the Philippines’ typhoon Haiyan, which swept through the Southeast Asian country last November.

We celebrated our accomplishments, explored the benefits of tactile communication, and had the opportunity to share many of our moments through the media, bylined articles, and community outreach. For more details, photos, and links, please visit our website at www.jeffersonsferry.org.

What gives us such heart is gathering often to listen and engage with one another in unexpected ways…not just in staff meetings or monthly residential fireside chats. I teach chair yoga at Jefferson’s Ferry because I love it, believe in its benefits, and have the opportunity to interact with residents in a unique way. And through the Embraceable You “Flash Mob” and Hug Booths, our staff was revealed to have considerable showmanship, and now residents look forward to subsequent occasions. The friendliness and interaction served to lift our spirits and keep the winter doldrums at bay.

Please visit and learn for yourself how Jefferson’s Ferry brings joy to lifecare.

The Annual Monte Carlo Night is fast approaching. Save the date of September 27, 2014 for a winning combination of fun and fundraising. Last year, over $100,000 was raised for the Successful Aging Project, Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s initiative to construct new space in the community to hold wellness programs for Long Island seniors. This year, the evening’s festivities, Casino-A-Go-Go, will transform you back to the 60’s.

Each year, we present a Community Builder Award to a deserving resident who has performed good deeds to improve the lives of those inside and outside the Jefferson’s Ferry Community. We will also honor a Humanitarian of the Year, for philanthropic leadership and commitment to helping others. As always our guests will enjoy casino gaming tables, slot machines and Las Vegas-style entertainment, all accompanied by fine food and drink.

Please join us for Monte Carlo Casino-A-Go-Go! It promises to be a night to remember. Get your tickets now before we sell out.

LIFECARE CAN BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE

Lifecare is a pre-payment of healthcare both through Entrance Fees and Monthly Maintenance Fees. Monthly Maintenance Fees are based on the size of your residence, not on the level of care you need. Consequently, regardless of how much care you need, you won’t pay more.

As a resident of a Lifecare retirement community, you may be allowed to take a tax deduction for the portion of your fees that are considered pre-paid medical expenses. Each year a statement is provided by Jefferson’s Ferry to our residents, calculating the percentage of the Entrance Fee and Monthly Maintenance Fees considered medical expenses.

To be able to use these deductions, generally you must use the itemized deduction method and your total medical expenses must exceed 7.5% (10% for alternative minimum tax purposes) of your adjusted gross income for the year. The percentages are the same for everyone and may vary slightly from year to year, but the amount eligible for deduction depends on the fees that you pay. You should always speak with your accountant regarding the best way to take this deduction.

This deduction can offset some costly capital gains on selling your home. So as you put a pencil to the costs of living at home versus the costs of moving to Jefferson’s Ferry, you will be surprised at how affordable Lifecare can be.

Heading into Long Island’s prime real estate season, many wonder if the 2014 housing market will continue to improve and perform. It’s not easy to predict the immediate or long-term market performance, especially when the opinions of economists and real estate industry watchers are so varied. Fortunately, there are key indicators to watch, and those indicators are pointing in the right direction.

The housing market is impacted by the economy, job market, and consumer confidence. Consumers will make a down payment and purchase a home when they feel financially stable and secure.

While interest rates have risen slightly, they are still at historic lows. As long as the economy continues to improve and consumers remain confident, interest rates shouldn’t impact long- term housing growth.

At Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, we are hopeful that 2014 will continue to gain momentum bringing with it a vibrant economy and flourishing housing market.

“Embraceable You” was a study conceived by Jefferson’s Ferry president & CEO Karen Brannen -- and conducted at the community in 2013 -- to explore the power of human touch in fostering trust and cooperation and providing a sense of well-being (physical and emotional) among residents. The response was huge and the exchanges promoted new bonds between residents and staff.

Launched with a “Flash Mob” (see video at www.jeffersonsferry.org) with staff singing “Hug Me Maybe” – a parody of “Call Me Maybe” – the initial event has since generated subsequent ones, including on-site Hug Booths during the Holidays and again at Valentine’s Day.

Now, there are “Hallway Hug” rovers (staff identified by red aprons) at Jefferson’s Ferry, ready to interact with any residents who sport a “Hug Me Maybe” pin

as indication they are ready for a hug, a fist bump, or maybe just a gentle hand at the elbow or shoulder.

The positive results are indisputable and awareness of tactile communication is now built into the orientation program at Jefferson’s Ferry. And, in Skilled Nursing, staff is changing the way they bathe residents to become a nurturing spa experience, with oversized fluffy bath towels and robes that come right out of a warm dryer.

Hug You Maybe?

Enjoy a leisurely lunch on the patio during a warm summer day.
