GENEROSITY
The law of immigraTion
Christmas was never about the presents. It was all
about the food, the chaos, the sweaty sandwiches
at the beach. Hot Decembers.
The light, the laughter, the lessons of an enormous,
and enormously energetic family. Big hearts. Big
worriers. Big madness. Big hope.
Be good. Be wild. Be free. Be all you can be.
Breaking bread for the birds. Climbing our favourite
tree (our ship we sailed through our grandparents’
garden). Picking mulberries. Watching the emerald
heads of the Mallard ducks glide. Jumping up and
slicing through the waves of the Indian ocean.
Sitting on the rock under the ‘slinga-berry’ tree
listening to Aia’s daydreamy stories. Making mutant
mountains out of paper mâché. Melty buttery slices
of warm date loaf. Skimming the crunchy crust
off the Milo. Thatha taught us to skip stones and
write our names in the night with Divali sparklers.
Coconut oil head massages. Singing “oh bla di oh
bla da life goes on” all the way from Durban to
Cape Town.
Now. Europe. A great distance.
A phone call, a card, a photo, a letter. Small gifts of
time for a plenitude of kindness.
