A board certified genetic counselor will answer any questions about cancer risk and genetic testing and will tailor the consultation to individual needs and concerns. Patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or a personal history of cancer may wish to speak with a genetic counselor if their diagnosis occurred at a younger age than is typical and/or they have a family history of the same or related cancers. Patients who have a family history of cancer may be concerned about what that means for them or their children. Genetic counseling and testing can help to reduce uncertainty surrounding cancer risk and assist patients in making informed choices about cancer surveillance and risk-reducing options. State-of-the-Art Breast Imaging FacilityIn conjunction with Good Samaritan’s Breast Health Center, the staff at the Women’s Imaging Center, a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, collaborate with many dedicated surgeons, laboratory personnel and genetic counselors. The radiologists, nurses, registered radiological technologists and patient navigators have special expertise in all aspects of breast imaging to provide the latest in screening and full-field, digital mammography services. These procedures minimize patient discomfort, while ensuring the most accurate diagnosis for a wide variety of breast abnormalities.

Services include: • 3-D digital tomosynthesis

• Diagnostic mammography

• Diagnostic digital 4-D ultrasound

• Computer-assisted detection

• Galactography

• High-resolution breast ultrasound

• Ultrasound-guided fine needle and core biopsies

• Stereotactic core biopsies

• Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), (located at Good Samaritan’s main campus)

Mammography Screening and DiagnosticsA baseline mammogram is recommended between the ages of 35 and 40, with yearly screenings starting at age 40 for women of average breast cancer risk. Women at elevated risk should speak with their physicians about earlier screenings with the addition of

other testing. When a mammogram using sophisticated equipment is performed, a physician has the greatest opportunity to detect breast cancer at an early, curable stage. Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center offers a range of diagnostic technologies to help physicians identify areas of special concern. It was the first facility in Suffolk County with 3-D digital tomosynthesis. This advanced, FDA-approved equipment is specially designed to detect abnormalities in dense breast tissue.

The Highest Accreditation Scores From the NAPBC

Good Samaritan earned a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered

by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

In addition, Good Samaritan has earned some of the nation’s most prestigious recognition:

• Breast Imaging Center of Excellence Designation by the American College of Radiology

• American College of Radiology Accreditation in Radiation Oncology, Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, MRI, Computed Tomography (CT) and Ultrasound

• Commission on Cancer Three-Year Accreditation With Commendation and Outstanding Achievement Award

• Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval™

Bone DensityDual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) bone densitometry is the “gold standard” of bone assessment methods. This noninvasive test is a baseline assessment for osteoporosis and can be completed in a matter of minutes. Test results provide important information to guide the next steps in care prevent future bone loss and minimize risk of a devastating injury. When an appointment is made for a mammogram, a DEXA test can be scheduled as well.

“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I felt like my world had ended. I turned to Good Sam.”
