Headstock and Spindle
Main Spindle Drive
The GENOS L300(E)-MY is equipped with a base mounted 20 HP VAC electric spindle drive system. The spindle motor develops full horsepower (over a speed range of 251 RPM to 3000 RPM). Maximum torque of 420 foot/pounds (570 Nm) is available from 25 to 251 RPM. . The A2-8 spindle design allows the flexibility of feeds and speeds needed to cut workpieces of a variety of materials. The design yields excellent surface finish and impressive metal removal rates.

CONSTRUCTION
Machine Construction Machine Component Design and Construction
The basic structural elements of the GENOS L300(E)-MY Turning Center are produced from high tensile strength alloyed cast iron that is carefully stress-relieved. The base and bed, cross slide, headstock, tailstock and turret form a balanced, rigid structure.
Base
The heavily ribbed, base casting is computer-designed for exceptional stiffness. The structure provides mounting support for carriage and sub-systems counteracts cutting loads and deflections. This foundation is the key to the machine’s stability and repeatable accuracy.
Bed
Is Integral box construction for mounting of the head -stock and integral box-type Z-axis guideways. The underside of the turret and cross- slide are hand-scraped to the mating surfaces. All bed and saddle way surfaces are induction-hardened on a specially designed Okuma Induction Hardening machine to 56 Rockwell “C” scale. The distance across large rectangular ways provides optimum support for the cross slide carriage.
.X- and Z-axes are driven by the ultra-precise ball screws and pre-loaded ball screw nuts, center-mounted between the ways for optimum drive conditions. Ball screw bearing blocks and ball nut mounting brackets are hand fitted for ideal assembled alignment.
Manual Touch Setter
To facilitate tool set up a manual tool touch setter is supplied in the base specification. This unit is mounted to the headstock and can be manually lowered to set tool offsets. Because of the working envelope of the Y axis machine, a removable arm type touch setter is provided.

CONSTRUCTION
Headstock and Spindle The GENOS L300(E)-MY cast iron headstock houses the spindle and is designed to easily handle the 20 HP drive capacity. The spindle is supported by double row, cylindrical roller bearings and high-speed double angular contact bearings. Axis Drives Ball Screws
Powerful, robust ball screws generate slideway movement to both axes of the GENOS L300L(E)-MY. The centrally mounted ball screws are based on proven designs and exacting performance standards. Screws are coupled by timing belts to the OSP axis drive servomotors. This ensures the highest level of accuracy. Contrary to general commercial drive systems, the OSP servomotors precisely match the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the GENOSL300(E)-MY A key element in the drive system is the unique OSP absolute position, digital feedback encoder connected to the shaft of each OSP axis servo drive motor.

Tailstock
The hydraulic tailstock has a 3.54” diameter dead quill with a stroke of 3.94 inches. The quill can be actuated under NC command or by the foot pedals while in manual mode. Position of the tailstock “body” is by manual handling. The position is secured with clamping bolts. The L300-MY has dead quill with MT#5 revolving center included in the base specification and a maximum thrust of 1,100 lbf. The L300E-MY has live quill with dead MT#4 center provided as standard and a maximum thrust of 1,430 lbf.

ACCURACY AND REPEATABILITY MAXIMIZING LONG-TERM QUALITY
Machine Position and Geometry The rigid machine structure coupled with a high response positioning system provides the following machine positioning accuracies and repeatabilities: Accuracy: X-axis: 0.00047” (0.012 mm) over any 4” (100mm) of stroke. Z-axis: 0.00078” (0.020 mm) over any 12” (300mm) of stroke. Repeatability: X-axis: +/-0.00012" (+/-0.003 mm) Z-axis:+/-0.0002” (+/-0.005 mm) These accuracy guarantees are based on the procedures stated below.
Machine Position and Geometry Inspection
Laser alignments, mechanical alignments and positioning accuracy checks are among the 200 quality tests performed on every GENOS L300(E)-MY. Lead screw compensations are measured during final inspection and maintained in the Okuma OSP control to insure the stated accuracies. X and Z-Axis Positioning Measurement: Procedure for determining positioning accuracy on X- an Z-axes is by laser measurement of a single, unidirectional, rapid traverse move of the cross-slide to a programmed position 3.93” (100 mm) along the X-axis. Afterward, the Z-axis is moved 11.81” (300 mm) from the starting position. The measured travel of cross-slide is compared with the commanded target position. The difference between the two numbers is the positioning accuracy for X and Z-axes. X- and Z-Axis Repeatability Measurement: The X- and Z-axes positioning test procedure (above) is repeated seven times. The difference between the largest result and the smallest result is the repeatability of X- and Z-axes. All moves are unidirectional, rapid traverse, single axis moves.

FLUID SYSTEMS
Machine Lubrication
Slideways and ball screws are lubricated by a centralized lubrication system. The system consists of a heavy-duty lubrication pump that feeds a series of precision piston distributors delivering the exact amount of oil required at each lubrication point. A manual force lube feature provides lubrication at time of start-up or long periods of machine shut down. In the event of lube system failure, the machine goes into an alarm state and cannot be restarted until the alarm is cleared.
Machine hydraulics Self contained hydraulic unit is enclosed by sheet metal of the machine minimizing pump dB. The main unit and important sub-systems are interlocked with the CNC to provide safe operation. Controls for chuck, and tailstock are provided at the front of the machine for ease of operation.
Chip & coolant control, enclosure Proper chip removal is essential in maximum metal removal conditions. The 30-degree cross slide construction permits chips to fall directly onto the chip pan without accumulating on the slides. The coolant system comes complete with screens and an independent 1 hp (.8 kW) pump unit is conveniently located at the tailstock end of the machine for easy access. A special coolant nozzle provides constant fluid flow at 3 gallons per minute and 100 psi.
Standard chip conveyor For machining operations where large quantities of chips are produced, the standard chain type lift and drop chip conveyor with right side discharge is supplied as standard.
Easy access The operating area of the machine is totally enclosed and has a low friction sliding front door with an observation window. Construction permits easy entry for workpiece loading/unloading and easy access to the tooling.

This spindle has an A2-6 spindle nose, is supported by double row, cylindrical roller bearings and high-speed double angular contact bearings. A two-point bearing support provides the rigidity for this very accurate spindle.
