fter more than a year of hard work, struggles and successes, it’s no longer an issue of working towards

chartering. It’s no longer an issue of struggling to recruit as a colony. On November 17, 2007, Oregon Sigma Pi will officially be the first fraternity to charter on the Oregon Campus in 11 years. This achievement marks the acomplishment that started with a seven man interest group and enthusiastically grew into a fifty man fraternal organization. If you are interested in celebrating with the brothers of Oregon Sigma Pi at their chartering banquet, please contact Roy Hillman, [email protected] by November 2, 2007.

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

A

T he Oregon colony started off this year with only 27 brothers. To charter, it was imperative to approach

students that are going to UO and try to gain support for our new colony. With the addition of three summer pledges, Sigma Pi started rush with 30 members. Over the course of the first two weeks, numbers grew considerably. Numerous rush events were put in place to show people what Sigma Pi is about. Over the two weeks, the colony gained 28 pledges, the second largest rush class on campus. The brotherhood has now doubled. At the University of Oregon, with Greek life being represented by less than 10% of the student population, a colony getting a rush class like this is unheard of. Rush events began on Monday, September 24, with a meet and greet barbecue. Through flyers and word of mouth, around 45 interested gentlemen indulged in burgers and house tours. Tuesday night a campus-wide game

of capture the flag attracted 30 recruits. Unfortunately two brothers were incurred minor injuries, neither had regrets. The following Tuesday, the popular brotherhood event dodge ball was turned into an exciting opportunity for recruits to share their competitiveness and spirit with the brothers. Many recruits attended nearly every event that followed, especially the final event: Steak and Cigar night. At dinner, many recruits stood up and announced their acceptance of their formal bids. As brothers, pledges and recruits talked and smoked cigars outside on the porch, recruits would randomly scream out their acceptance of bids. After the night concluded, brothers struggled to comprehend the success of recruitment. Through all the colonies trials and tribulations, a highly successful recruitment insured that Sigma Pi will be a leading fraternity at the University of Oregon. See RUSH! on page 2 for more photos

B elieve it or not, it is difficult to acquire fraternal housing when you lack financial backing. The brothers of

Oregon Sigma Pi found themselves in this situation—however, after trudging through the world of rental properties, the brothers landed right in the middle of Greek row. Dubbed by brothers as the Hacienda, the 25 room, hundred year old, pink stucco house became Sigma Pi’s first official home. Working with Steve Frachett, a ΣΑΕ alumnus, Progressive Properties owner, and Hacienda landlord, a ten month lease was put in place. Steve promised to make various improvements on the house if brothers in return made their own. After two weeks of hard work, the monster housed, honey infested, musty basement turned into a social functions work horse, the kitchen turned useable and the living quarters found a new purple tint. The house continues to improve as brothers find the appropriate funding. As most of you are likely aware, housing is key in fraternities. Brothers in Hacienda instantly gained a bond

that lacked the previous year. Living in each others dirt and moral fiber helped brothers gain a sincere trust and understanding in each other. The brotherhood of Sigma Pi currently rests in the highest regard. Now brothers have a place to meet, feed and show off to pledges what they’ve done. The brothers pledged when they colonized that they would first make an impact on, and then lead, the Greek system at Oregon; the Hacienda serves as a monumental step toward this pledge. After a successful recruitment, five new recruits have moved into the house. Not only is every room in the house occupied, but one room is doubled. In addition to brothers, E.C. was successful in finding a live in advisor. The house is far from perfect, but it’s home. Each brother has stenciled a name for their room on the doors, and painted the walls inside. The basement received an entirely new paint job and the halls are sporting Sigma Pi’s legendary purple. The brothers have made their mark in the Hacienda.

Gentlemen’s Journal birthed by President Roy Hillman and First Counselor Kevin Bronk.

regon Sigma Pi was founded May 5th of 2006. In less than a year and half we

are close to achieving the goals we set upon our colonizing. As Vice President of our Colony, it is extremely rewarding to see all the hard work of our venture pay off. With our chartering less than a month away, our second successful Rush under our belts and a house to call our own, the message we are sending is quite clear. On November 17th, we will be the first colony to successfully receive a charter in the past 11 years from the U of O. We had the second largest pledge class on campus with 28 new pledges, only falling short of the biggest house on campus by two members! As we continue to develop and grow, it’s important that our founding principles not be forgotten. We built this fraternity by being innovators and leaders, in trying to create a new kind of fraternity. What we have now is a brotherhood that personifies our values of diversity, toward scholarship and chivalry, and providing service to our community and campus. In being considered with in a New Generation of Leaders, I believe very strongly in the asset our fraternity is to our brothers, Greek community, and University. It is the responsibility of each of our brothers to add his personal touch in the development of this amazing fraternity. The important message I’d like to pass down to all future Sigma Pi’s of Oregon is that we each control our own destiny, make the absolute most out of being in this great organization while in college, and you will leave a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.” -Nick Wiley, VP

Revamping the HouseThe Hacienda needed work. The first two weeks in the house, the brothers spent their time making their house into home.

Nick Wiley and Ahmed Al-Jutaili work on the kitchen, a room brothers feared to enter prior to work week.

Matt Reis halls junk out the basement, the former scariest basement in the Eugene area.

The Hacienda came complete with plenty of needless junk. The trash pictured here, was just the begining.

First Sigma Pi Function Old School

F riday, September 21st, the gentlemen of Sigma Pi Oregon colony held their first social event with an

80s workout theme. Kicking off the beginning of a new year in a new house, the party was much anticipated by the men of Sigma Pi as well as the Greek community at large. The turnout was higher than expected, but the party was never too much to handle for our risk management policy, and all the brothers comported themselves as gentlemen, allowing the party to go off without a hitch.

The party fulfilled its twofold purpose: the men of Sigma Pi were able to shed some pounds and enjoy themselves, and also promote the name of Sigma Pi and create a good rapport with the Greek community. Many of those in attendance, after meeting the brothers and seeing the house, ended up rushing Sigma Pi. This was first of many events to come, and if this is any indicator then the future looks bright indeed.
