COMPTON. Within a few weeks the Macmillan Company will publish in the large volume, "The Island of Formosa, Past and Present." the result of the investigations of James W. Davidson, United States Consul there. He has been at work upon the book for several years. Mr. Davidson was connected with the Peary expedition toward the Pole, and was correspondent of a syndicate of newspapers during the recent war between China and Japai.. Julia Ward Howe has lately completed the introduction which she has been preparing for "Margaret Fullers Love Letters," which the Appletonfl wi!l issue about the middle of the month. Mrs. Howe passed her eighty-fourth birthday on May 27 at her home in Boston. All her children, several of her grandchildren and her lirsi crcai -grandchild were present. On June 2~ Professor William Cranston Law- ton will publish through the Scribners an "In- troduction to Classical Greek Literature." He « onsiders Ihe masterpieces from Homer to l.u'ian. making both a critical interpretation and an historical survey. William Ellery Channinc's "Discourses on War" have been published for the International Union by <?inn & Co. The I^othrop Publishing Company has just issu'-d a story told in letters, called "A Parish of Tv.o." One of the correspondents is a clergy- man and the other a clubman. The book has been written in collaboration by H. G. McVickor and another, who assumes the pen name "Percy Collins." A play in three acts and in blank verse is soon, to be published anonymously by Longmans, Green & Co., under the title "Mnrs et Victoria." The scene is laid in France shortly after the massacre of Pt. Bartholomew. The heroine is maid of honor at the court of Marg.iret of Navarre, and is persecuted by the attentions of the Duke de Guise, who follows her to her father's castle, where he kills her lover leading an opposing band of Huguenots. The maid of honor chooses to die with him, persuaded that love outlasts the grave. Th<= Oxford University Press has put upon the market an India paper edition of Dickens in seventeen volumes. The publication is made by arrangement with Chapman & Hall, who own the copyright. The additional stories and sketches which appeared in the ••Gadshill" and "Authentic" editions are included with some six hundred illustrations reproduced from the origi- nal ones. The device for reference has been adopted of printing a list of the chief charac- t?rs at the beginning of each book. S-.iK>rf>sti<ins came to hand that this book was such a revelation of the in- side workings of society and public life at our .seal of government that i' might have been an- p!?»asiant for the author, or shall we say au- thors, to reveal himself, herself or themselves. We were also boM that "his or her book will surely prick the his ones at Washington pretty smartly, and the author will save his pkin by not disclosing his identity." One can picture the "big ones at Washinpton" meeting in se- cret caucus and considering measures for the stretching of his. her or their skin or skins on the steps of the Capitol. Now we are honored with an attempted identifu^tion by the process of exclusion. Itis suggested that among writ- ers living In Washington are Miss MollyElliot Seawell. "whose salon is always filled with dip- lomats and lawmakers"; Thomas Nelson Page, and Mrs. Frances Hodgson Burnett, who has already written a novel at Washington life called "Through One Administration." It is pointed out that the novel is hardly in Miss Sea««XPs style. and is by no means what would be expected from Mr. Page. Now. is this MM inviting calamity for the author of '■Through One Administration"? What is this . -..■]. anonymity? Mr. Bell confesses to a youthful devotion to

littlehero. "Wee Macgreegor." It seems that heuped to spend all his weekly allowance of money

for the sweetmeat, a circumstance 'whichswelled his pockets to such an extent that onesad

""v his schoolmaster took note of it.

titled My Relations with <'arlyle." which was

r'-epare'S by Froude himself and found after his

death among other papers left by him. His ex-ecutors, Hr. Ashley A. Froude and Miss Mar-

caret Froud*2. have decided to publish this only

because, as they state in a prefatory note, "theproduction of the New Letters and Memorialsof Jane. Welsh Carlyle,' with the serious charges

contained in the Introduction and Footnotes,"

seems to them to demand it. We gave yester-

day the name of the publisher who will nrine

this out In London. In this country it willbe

issued by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons, thepublishers here of Froude's books on the Car-lyles, who have received it from England forimmediate publication.

Within a few weeks the Macmillan Companywillpublish in the large volume, "The Island ofFormosa, Past and Present." the result of theinvestigations of James W. Davidson, UnitedStates Consul there. He has been at work uponthe book for several years. Mr. Davidson wasconnected with the Peary expedition toward thePole, and was correspondent of a syndicate ofnewspapers during the recent war betweenChina and Japai..

Julia Ward Howe has lately completed theintroduction which she has been preparing for"Margaret Fullers Love Letters," which theAppletonfl wi!l issue about the middle of themonth. Mrs. Howe passed her eighty-fourthbirthday on May 27 at her home in Boston. Allher children, several of her grandchildren andher lirsi crcai -grandchild were present.

On June 2~ Professor William Cranston Law-ton will publish through the Scribners an "In-troduction to Classical Greek Literature." He« onsiders Ihe masterpieces from Homer tol.u'ian. making both a critical interpretationand an historical survey.

William Ellery Channinc's "Discourses onWar" have been published for the InternationalUnion by <?inn & Co.

The I^othrop Publishing Company has justissu'-d a story told in letters, called "AParish ofTv.o." One of the correspondents is a clergy-man and the other a clubman. The book hasbeen written in collaboration by H. G. McVickorand another, who assumes the pen name "PercyCollins."

A play in three acts and in blank verse is soon,

to be published anonymously by Longmans,

Green & Co., under the title "Mnrs et Victoria."The scene is laid in France shortly after the

massacre of Pt. Bartholomew. The heroine ismaid of honor at the court of Marg.iret ofNavarre, and is persecuted by the attentions ofthe Duke de Guise, who follows her to herfather's castle, where he kills her lover leading

an opposing band of Huguenots. The maid of

honor chooses to die with him, persuaded thatlove outlasts the grave.

hundred illustrations reproduced from the origi-

nal ones. The device for reference has beenadopted of printing a list of the chief charac-

t?rs at the beginning of each book. The aver-

The novel <>f Washington life and politics

■which McOlur*. Phillips & Co. have issued.■»-al!^d "Despotism and Democracy." ■»• pub-lished anonymously. S-.iK>rf>sti<ins came to handthat this book was such a revelation of the in-

side workings of society and public life at our.seal of government that i' might have been an-p!?»asiant for the author, or shall we say au-thors, to reveal himself, herself or themselves. We were also boM that "his or her book willsurely prick the his ones at Washington prettysmartly, and the author willsave his pkin by

not disclosing his identity." One can picturethe "big ones at Washinpton" meeting in se-cret caucus and considering measures for thestretching of his. her or their skin or skins onthe steps of the Capitol. Now we are honoredwith an attempted identifu^tion by the processof exclusion. Itis suggested that among writ-ers livingIn Washington are Miss MollyElliotSeawell. "whose salon is always filled with dip-

lomats and lawmakers"; Thomas Nelson Page,

and Mrs. Frances Hodgson Burnett, who hasalready written a novel at Washington lifecalled "Through One Administration." It is

pointed out that the novel is hardly in Miss

Sea««XPs style. and is by no means what

would be expected from Mr.Page. Now. is this

MM inviting calamity for the author of'■Through One Administration"? What is this
