Urban  Con4nuum  of  Buenos  Aires  consists  of  :  

o  Autonomous  city  of  Buenos  Aires:  48  sta0s0cal  units  (barrios)  

o  Greater  Buenos  Aires:  Autonomous  city  +  24  stat  units  (par0dos)  of  the  province  Buenos  Aires  

o  Agglomera0on  of  Buenos  Aires:  Greater  Buenos  Aires  +  6  stat  units  (par0dos)  of  the  province  of  Buenos  Aires

The history of formation of socio-economic segregation in Buenos Aires Until 1943 – the formation of a “city of masses”

Results:  •     The  city  doubled  its  area  –  took  nowadays  configura0on  •     Massive  and  chao0c  suburbaniza0on  of  low  income  popula0on  groups    •     Self    constructed    houses  -­‐  Infrastructural  deficiencies  –    absence  of  sewerage,  water  inside  the  household  •   Concentric  paQern  of  distribu0on  of  socio-­‐economic  groups

1960-1990- Alteration of political regimes and neoliberal economical policy  

Preconditions o  Unstable political situation o  Neoliberal economical course o  End of privileges for the low income

populations o  Governmental stimulation of large

housing projects (for middle class) o  Exclusion of the low income

populations from the city center Results §  End of the territorial growth §  More densely populated urban
