2.COURSEDESCRIPTIONThiscourseisdesignedasagraduate-levelgeographicinformationsystemscourseandfocusesontheassociatedfundamentalscientificprinciples,theories,andtechniquesStudentswilllearnhowtheEarth’sfeaturesaremodeledandstoredinacomputerinformationsystem.Studentswilllearnhowtousegeographicinformationsystemstoanswergeographicquestionsandhowtoperformanalyticalproceduresusinggeographicdata.Studentswilllearndatapresentation,dataanalysis,andcartographictechniquesusingindustrystandardgeographicinformationsystemssoftware.Credithoursforthiscourse:3

3.COURSEPREREQUISITESTheprerequisiteisGGS550(GeospatialScienceFundamentals),whichincludesconceptsandtheoriesofcartography,remotesensing,airphotointerpretation,GlobalPositioningSystems,spatialdatastructures,andgeographicinformationsystems.TheundergraduateGIScourseGGS311(IntroductiontoGeographicInformationSystems)orequivalentisalsouseful.

4.COURSEEXPECTATIONS1. Graduatecoursesrequirededicationandorganization.Properpreparationisexpectedeveryweek.Youare

expectedtocompletetheassignmentsandactivitiesonorbeforetheduedates,andtoprepareforclassbydoinganyassignedreading.

2. StudentsmustchecktheirGMUemailmessagesonaregularbasisforcourseannouncements,whichmayincludereminders,revisions,andupdates.

6.LEARNINGOUTCOMESBytheendofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:

1. Demonstrateabroadknowledge-baseofthefundamentalscientifictheories,principalsandtechniquesofGeographicInformationSystems.

2. DemonstrateanunderstandingofthesocietalcontextofGIS,andarticulateimportanthistoricalevents,contemporarydevelopments,andfuturetrendsthatshapeGIS.

3. ApplyanddemonstratekeyconceptsofspatialanalysisusingcommercialGISsoftware.4. Givenaspecificproblem,identifyproblemparameters,characterizedataneeds,assembledata,and

performanalysiswithGIS.5. EffectivelycommunicateresultsofanalysisusingmapsandgraphicsproducedwithGIS,createdaccording

tobestprofessionalcartographicpracticesandaestheticguidelines.

7.TECHNOLOGYREQUIREMENTS&EXPECTATIONS

9.PERFORMANCE-BASEDASSESSMENTSYouwillachievecoursegoalsandlearningoutcomesthroughattendingthecourselectures,readingthetextbookorotherassignedreadings,participatinginclassdiscussions,workingthroughGISassignments,completingwrittenassignments,andtakingexaminationsatmidtermandduringfinalsweek.

GISLabAssignments:Therewillbe14separateGISlabassignments,introducedinclassanddue1weeklateratthebeginningofclassunlessotherwiseindicated.Eachassignmentshouldtakeapproximately2-4hourstocomplete,dependingonyourbackground.GISlabassignmentsareacceptedupto10dayslateEachdaytheassignmentislateincursa10%penalty.TheGISLabAssignmentsareeachworth100points,andwillcollectivelybeworth45%ofthefinalgrade.

b. 11.RUBRICSGISExercisesEachGISExercisewillbeworth100points,with1pointforeachsubstantiveanswerindicatedintheassignedproblemset,orothersignificantmethodologicalstep.Withregardtonumericalanswers,acompleteanswerwiththerelevantunitswillbeworthfullcreditforthatproblem.Studentsstartwith100pointsandreceivea1pointdeductionforincorrectanswersorincorrectexecutionofamethod,anda½pointdeductionforminorerrorssuchasalackofunitswhererequired.Incorrectorincompleteanswersnotincludinganomissionofunits(ft.,yards,acres,miles,meters,etc.)willreceiveafullpointdeduction.GISExerciseswillhaveafullwrittenevaluationandspecificindicatorsofreasonsforpointdeductions.GISExercisesshouldbesubmittedthroughBlackboardinMicrosoftWordformatorotherrelevantformatasspecifiedintheassignment.CartographicworkmustbesubmittedinPDFformatinhighestquality.
