6. Theories of Money II: Social and Anthropological Accounts (25 items)In this lecture we explore sociological and anthropological accounts of money that have, inpart, developed as a counter to the perceived economic bias of more orthodox theories. In this lecture, we explore how finance is a cultural as well as an economicpractice. This is achieved through engaging with the rapidly growing, inter-disciplinaryliterature on the cultural economies of money and finance. The lecture considers how thiswork provides considerable insights into the operations of contemporary financial services. However, we also reflect on its limited geographical and political imaginations andconsider the implications of this for developing critical understandings of the internationalfinancial system.

Financial Subjects II: ‘Masters of the Universe’ (26 items)In this lecture, we extend work on financial subjects to include financial elites working inthe heartlands of the international financial system. Whilst earlier research documentedthe importance of educational background in securing entry into, and building trust within, these elite networks, more recent work examines how education, training and workingpractices are used to inculcate individuals into the norms and expectations of working as afinancial elite. This lecture will examine critically the elite financial subjects (re)producedthrough these processes, paying particular attention to their attitudes to risk and theirgendered composition.
