On the basis of your performance in this examination, the examiners will provide results on each of the following criteria taken from the course statement: Criterion 3 Communicate geographical ideas and information. Criterion 4 Identify and apply geographical concepts to geographical phenomena. Criterion 5 Identify geographical processes and their relation to geographical change. Criterion 6 Identify geographical issues or challenges and possible solutions.

CANDIDATE INSTRUCTIONS You MUST make sure that your responses to the questions in this examination paper will show your achievement in the criteria being assessed. Answer each section in a separate booklet. It is strongly recommended that you note the time allocations given for each question. This paper is divided into FOUR sections. You must answer EIGHT questions in total. Answer ALL questions in Sections A, B and C. Answer ONE question in essay form in Section D. All written responses must be in English.

SECTION A
Answer ALL questions from this section. You MUST refer to and use the accompanying Information Sheet when answering both questions. The World Population (2014) Data Sheet may assist you with your answers. Use a separate answer booklet for each section. It is recommended that you spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. This section assesses Criteria 4 and 6. Question 1 (25 minutes) Refer to Figures 1-8 on the Information Sheet and the World Population (2014) Data Sheet when answering this question. (a) Briefly describe Australia’s population distribution. (b) Explain the key factors that contribute to some regions of Australia being densely populated and
other regions being only sparsely populated. Question 2 (20 minutes) Metropolitan and regional cities in Australia are facing numerous challenges associated with increasing rates of urbanisation. (a) Using one specific example describe one challenge associated with urbanisation in Australia. (b) Suggest a possible solution to this challenge. (c) Evaluate the likely success of this solution.

SECTION B
Answer ALL questions from this section. Use a separate answer booklet for each section. It is recommended that you spend approximately 45 minutes on the question. This section assesses Criteria 4 and 5. Question 3 (25 minutes) ‘Anthropogenic climate change is a global phenomenon affecting people and environments.’ Outline the key causes of anthropogenic climate change and using specific examples from both More Developed Countries (MDCs) and Less Developed Countries (LDCs) describe the key social and environmental impacts of this phenomenon. Question 4 (20 minutes) ‘Humans are significantly altering the nature and extent of land cover across the globe.’ Using specific examples from both MDCs and LDCs briefly describe how two human actions are resulting in land cover changes and outline the consequences of these changes.

SECTION C
Answer ALL questions from this section. Use a separate answer booklet for each section. It is recommended that you spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. This section assesses Criteria 3 and 5. Question 5 (15 minutes) Define the term ‘globalisation’ and briefly discuss how two factors have contributed to the growth of the process. Question 6 (15 minutes) Using specific examples, explain how enhancements in technology and transport have contributed to the development of global brands. Question 7 (15 minutes) Briefly describe what the major influences of economic growth have been in China and explain how this growth has positively impacted the Asia-Pacific region.

SECTION D
Answer ONE question in essay form from this section. Use a separate answer booklet for this section. All questions are of equal value. It is recommended that you spend approximately 45 minutes on this section. This section assesses Criteria 3 and 6. Question 8 Explain the causes and consequences of at least two key challenges faced by one megacity in a developing country. Describe a range of strategies that have been used to address these specific challenges and assess how these strategies have enhanced the sustainability of this city. Question 9 Answer EITHER Part (a) OR Part (b) of this question, but NOT both. (a) Choose one of the following:
Either glacier and ice sheet retraction or rising sea levels leading to land cover loss or cropland/pasture loss and/or degradation or desertification or coral reef loss and/or degradation.
Explain how global anthropogenic climate change is contributing to your chosen topic and describe the environmental, economic and social impacts of this topic. Discuss what local and/or international initiatives have been designed to address the effects of your topic and evaluate how successful these responses have been.
(b) Choose one of the following:
Either deforestation or the expansion/intensification of agriculture or rangeland modification or land and soil degradation or irrigation or land drainage or land reclamation or urban expansion or mining.
Briefly describe the negative environmental impacts of your chosen topic and discuss how one program is restoring and/or rehabilitating the land affected. Describe the environmental, economic and social costs and benefits of this program and evaluate how successful this program has been in implementing positive changes.

Section D (continued) Question 10 Answer EITHER Part (a) OR Part (b) of this question, but NOT both. (a) Choose one of the following:
Either a mineral ore or fossil-based energy resource or a food or fibre-based commodity or a complex manufactured commodity or a commodity typical of the ‘weightless’ or service based economy.
Describe the changing distribution of production and consumption in your chosen activity. Explain why these changes have occurred and using specific examples discuss the social, economic and political implications of these changes.
(b) Choose one element of culture such as fashion, sport, leisure, music, religion, language,
architecture and political ideas.
Describe the geographical spread of your chosen element and the pattern of distribution this diffusion has produced. Explain the role of technology, transport, communications and the media in influencing this pattern and using specific examples, discuss some of the predicted future changes to this pattern.
