GEOMETRY

COURSE ASSIGNMENT PROGRAM (CAP)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Geometry is a full year, high school math course for the student who has

successfully completed the prerequisite course, Algebra I. The course focuses on the skills and methods of linear, coordinate, and plane geometry. In it, students will gain solid experience with geometric calculations and coordinate plane graphing, methods of formal proof, and techniques of construction.

By the end of the course, students will be expected to do the following:

Understand defined terms, axioms, postulates, and theories.

Apply rules of formal logic and construct proofs in two-column format. Know how to solve for angles given parallels, perpendiculars, and

transversals.

Demonstrate how to solve for sides and angles of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons.

Understand trigonometric ratios and know how to use them to solve for

unknown sides and angles in given triangles as well as application word problems.

Be able to determine arcs, chords, and sectors of circles. Calculate perimeter, area, and volume of figures and solids. Graph lines and determine slopes, midpoints, and distances.

Represent results of motion geometry (translation, rotation, reflection, dilation).

Geometry Resources

Added to your NFC Academy academic program is the online Geometry

Resources which is added instructional materials with additional videos and text instruction. Additionally, in your Algebra I Resources online

materials will be added practice opportunities. Students should take advantage of all instructional materials in the curriculum to maximize success.

NFC Academy Kahn Academy/YouTube Instructional Concepts through Online Videos

Students will typically find within each lesson video presentations for the concept being covered along with a variety of ways to practice their

comprehension of the concept. Additionally, for most daily lessons in this mathematics course students

will find a link to a video presentation of the concept from Kahn Academy

or another provider giving instructional explanations on the concept. Kahn Academy is a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to provide

outstanding learning programs worldwide to help students of any age increase their knowledge and skills in subjects like math and science. You will want to establish a favorites for Kahn Academy at

http://www.khanacademy.org/about and go from there. The video presentations are not a substitute for completing the required

assignments in the NFC Academy Ignitia Curriculum, but serve as a

supplement to aid the student in gaining an understanding of the specific mathematics concept. All work requirements in the curriculum

from daily lessons, quizzes, and tests are required for successful completion of the course.

Video instruction links may be repeated for several concepts if the

material covered may aid the student in the understanding of the general concept, or a specific concept discussed within the broader discussion.

There may be one or a series of video instructions on the topic and the

student should select and view as many as necessary to help them in their understanding of the specific concept. There are exercises with the

concepts to test the student’s understanding and we recommend they be completed for additional practice as needed.

While the video presentations are valuable to aid the student as they

review and complete each lesson, the NFC Academy teacher is an essential resource in completing daily assignments when questions arise

and further explanation is needed. Feedback to the teachers from the students will be encouraged as it

relates to the instructions provided thorough the video teaching program

from Kahn Academy and other sources coordinated with the student’s NFC Academy assignments.

Special Note Regarding Supplemental Videos

NFC Academy works diligently to provide additional materials to our homeschool students which will help bridge the gap from a traditional classroom to the home with a teacher who does not have direct daily live

interaction with the student. These supplementary videos which are typically from Kahn Academy or available through research in YouTube are screened prior to being included. However, material offered over the

Internet, especially using YouTube may change without notice to the user. We recommend screening of such material by the home to avoid

content that may be unacceptable in an advertising promotion which could be added as a part of some videos.

The easiest way to use the supplemental videos provided in this file:

1. To have open this Word file, or the PDF file when doing your lesson in math

2. Scroll to the assignment listed in this Course Assignment Program (CAP)

3. Typically the BLACK font is the assignment to be completed and when available in BLUE are supplementary instructional videos on the specific lesson content of the day.
